New York Notes: Dickey, Murphy, Posada

By Luke Adams 2 | January 29, 2011 at 9:48pm CDT

SI.com's Jon Heyman tweets that the 2013 All-Star Game will be played at Citi Field, making it very possible the stadium will host an All-Star Game before it hosts its first playoff game. Let's check out the rest of today's Mets- and Yankees-related links….

  • The Mets' two-year deal with R.A. Dickey could be a coup, says Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger.
  • Daniel Murphy has played all over the diamond in recent years, and will head into the 2011 season aiming to become the Mets' starting second baseman. Manager Terry Collins says Murphy could also play some first and third base. ESPNNewYork's Adam Rubin has the details.
  • Speaking to the media, Jorge Posada discussed his and Derek Jeter's defensive positions for 2011 and beyond. Peter Botte of the New York Daily News passes along quotes from the Yankees' new designated hitter, who says he still expects to see some time behind the plate this year.
  • Chad Jennings of the Journal News explores possible fits for the Yankees' bench, naming Lastings Milledge or Felipe Lopez as potential targets.

Milledge should sign with the Dodgers… if they will put up with Manny’s BS they will put up with anything as long as the player produces on the field.

Having seen some Pirates games via Extra Innings, Lastings showed a better attitude.

He should find a job with someone else, maybe the Jays. Last year, he hit .312 against Lefties. The reason the Pirates got rid of him is because he didn’t exhibit much power and we thought Matt Diaz was a better platoon option.

Shea Stadium hosted an All-Star game 5 years before it hosted a playoff game. Hopefully the wait won’t be as long for Citi Field.

PNC Park may never host a playoff game.

I’m not sure where Posada is getting this idea that he’ll be catching. If Martin and Cervelli are both healthy, I think the Yanks are set behind the plate.

And once Montero’s ready, that’ll definitely be no contest. Welcome to the land of the DH, buddy.

You really think Cervelli makes the team? I think the catchers are Martin and Posada. If you carry a third, better a Chad Moeller type. In a tight, hard fought game where the dust is settling after pinch hitting/running for your catcher and all you need is a good 8th or 9th inning, is Cervelli the guy you want in there facing a team with ANY sort of speed? If we keep Cervelli he may best get his 3rd baseman’s glove out and spend a year at AAA. He’s no catcher for a championship team.

Cervelli will make the team because the Yanees do not want Posada behind the plate. he is going to DH exclusively unless an injury happens or Martin or Cervelli hit like .100

Cervelli wouldn’t be a third catcher. He’d be Russell Martin’s backup as Posada shifts to an exclusively DH role. Keep that arrangement up until Montero is ready, and then boot whichever catcher has been worse. Very simple.

I think Cervelli had a relapse defensively last year but I still think he’s one of the best backups in baseball. I’m not sure what happened between 2009 and 2010 to cause his CS % to drop from 43% to 14% but if you look at his minor lge career avg of 41% it makes me think 2010’s 14% was an abberation. I would rather stick with Cervelli than bring in Moeller.

Moeller was just an example, he’s already signed with the Rockies. On
          Cervelli, I hope you’re right. …………joe

Finally! An outstanding destination mentioned in the article by Jennings that not only gives the NYY a fair (at best) utility player, but Boston a Supplemental pick in the draft next year..

    Go for it Cashman..

Murphy to play some third base? Am I missing something? I thought the third best 3rd baseman in the NL played there…

Lastings has had problems from day 1! Stat rape, the note, the high fives ,the rap album lyrics, that gets you traded for bums to the Nats. Nats trade him because he’s such a great guy to the Pirates . Pirates release him because he is not worth the headache and untradeable.

Lastings can find another job. He hit lefties well and may work in a platoon situation. The reason the Pirates got rid of him was because he didn’t show much power or on base %. However, he was one of our best hitters for RISP.
