Marlins Sign Greg Dobbs

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 31, 2011 at 11:45am CDT

The Marlins signed Greg Dobbs to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro (on Twitter). The team also officially announced the signing of Shawn Hill.

Dobbs hit just .196/.251/.331 last year and the Phillies designated him for assignment twice during the season. The 32-year-old hit .284/.331/.467 in 598 plate appearances from 2007-08 and he set the franchise record for pinch hits in a season with 22 in 2008.

Most of Dobbs' big league experience comes at third base, but he has experience at all of the corner infield and outfield positions. Dobbs' managers have always shielded him from left-handed pitching, since he struggles against southpaws.

This could be a good low-risk signing. Dobbs has some pop.

I hope it works out for Greg. He was an important part of the Phils 2008 Championship team. Not sure what happened last year. He got demoted twice and didn’t even hit at AAA, so his skills may just be gone?

They would have been better off if they signed Lou Dobbs.

I don’t think you’ve really thought this out too well.

In Miami, Lou Dobbs would be so busy protesting Cuban immigration, he would likely end up batting below .100

I’ll take Gregg, given the circumstances.

Not to mention the overtime Lou Dobbs would be putting in adding to his waistline eating all that Cuban Cuisine before, during, and after the protests. I don’t think his heart could take it.

Although just like Wes Helms, he’ll probably become a Phillie-killer now that he’s with the Marlins.

Thanks for 07 and 08 season Dobbs, but you killed us in 09 and 10.
