Phillies Designate Greg Dobbs For Assignment

By Tim Dierkes | August 17, 2010 at 1:52pm CDT

The Phillies designated third baseman Greg Dobbs for assignment to make room for Chase Utley, tweets Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer.  Dobbs, 32, hit just .191/.250/.319 in 153 plate appearances this year.

Dobbs had a nice run for the Phillies in 2007-08, hitting .284/.331/.467 in 598 plate appearances mostly against right-handed pitching.  The Phillies gave Dobbs a two-year deal before the '09 season, when he first became arbitration-eligible.  There is a general, worrisome trend of the Phillies giving players extra years or locking up arbitration-eligible players when it wasn't entirely necessary.

“There is a general, worrisome trend of the Phillies giving players extra years or locking up arbitration-eligible players when it wasn’t entirely necessary.”

That could’ve been the whole article, and it would’ve worked.

Giving Dobbs $1mil/year to be a PH was not exactly a ‘worrisome trend’.

By itself it’s not, but the words “trend” and “players” implies I was talking about more than just Dobbs. Which I will illustrate in a future post!

If he had another year in 2009 like he did in 07/08, what would his 2010 Arb number look like?

given that he is a platoon/bench player, not much

Dobbs, Baez, Gload, Schneider…any of the four could have been had on 1yr deals. Amaro is obsessive about cost certainty.

Baez is the only gross overpay of the bunch…but that’s not saying much.

I’m not sure Gload wouldnt get a 2 year deal elsewhere. Same for Baez, sadly.

Too bad fans place comments like Dobbs stinks. I coached Greg as a a youth and not only is he a quality player but a top notch and quality person. The average person just doesn’t get it that it is tough to hit for average when you play once every ten days! Greg will catch on some where and when he plays regularly he is pretty darn good!
