Mets Sign Blaine Boyer

By Mark Polishuk | January 21, 2011 at 4:57pm CDT

The Mets have signed right-hander Blaine Boyer to a minor league contract, reports ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin.  The deal includes an invitation to New York's Major League Spring Training camp.

Boyer was selected as a non-tender candidate by MLBTR's Tim Dierkes in November, and indeed, the 29-year-old reliever was non-tendered by Arizona last month.  Boyer posted a 4.26 ERA in 54 appearances with the D'Backs in 2010, and had a perfectly matched K/BB ratio (29 strikeouts, 29 walks).  On the plus side, he's a hard-thrower with one of the best groundball rates in the game.

Wow….we really got us a cast of thousands forming here. I guess if we can’t piece a team together this spring, at least we can stage an off-Broadway production of “Damn Yankees!”

Another live body in that bullpen on a MILB deal so you can’t go wrong.

Well the last time the Jets won the Super Bowl the Mets followed up by winning the World Series the following year so… 😉

Just don’t let Boyer pitch on your Major League Roster and you’ll be fine. He is horrible….

I’m surprised Dayton Moore didn’t sweep in and grab him before we did.

Nah. Byrdak doesn’t have that ex-Braves flavor that Moore’s looking for.

Sure he does. He spent six seasons in, and was drafted by, ATL.

Whats up mr sarcastic? Are you serious? You know the money we have to work with this year. Alderson is doing a bang up job with what he has to work with, and with the bullpen? The more bodies as options to make the MAJOR LEAGUE ballclub the better. Thats why he he is making all of these minor league signings for the bullpen to compete for a major league spot with the club. It doesnt take a genius to figure that one out

Hey nancyboy, that’s why you PLAY to win during the season, not January. The Giants did the same “bargain binging” during the season and went on to win the Series” albeit they had stellar pitching.

At best, he’d make a solid ROOGY. Last year, righties hit .198 against him, lefties .352.

we havent had a solid ROOGY since Chad Bradford and that year we made it within one Carlos Beltran swing (instead of watching a hanging curveball) of going to the world series
