AL East Notes: Yankees, Red Sox, Fenway, Epstein

By Mike Axisa | February 19, 2011 at 5:39pm CDT

Here is the latest from two of baseball's biggest powerhouses…

  • Yankees GM Brian Cashman told Chad Jennings of The Journal News that there are no player moves on the horizon. "I have nothing I'm involved with right now," he said. "Zero."
  • Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino told Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe that his team will have the financial room to add players at the trade deadline, if needed (Twitter link).
  • Lucchino also told Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston and Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe that he was informed by engineers that Fenway Park will be structurally sound for another 40-50 years, so there are no plans for a new ballpark (Twitter links).
  • Red Sox owner John Henry told Alex Speier of WEEI.com that he doesn't even know how long GM Theo Epstein is under contract, and there are no real discussions about his future (Twitter link). Cot's Baseball Contracts doesn't know how long Epstein is under contract either.
  • Boston has paid upwards of $85MM in revenue sharing and approximately $1.5MM in luxury tax, tweets Speier.
  • Anyone dreaming of Mark Teixeira for Albert Pujols trade can stop now. The Yankees first baseman told Joel Sherman of The New York Post (on Twitter) that "I've got that no-trade [clause] for a reason. I'm not going anywhere. I'm going to be buried in these pinstripes."

If he keeps the Yankees from getting Albert and falls off any he may be buried in those pinstripes sooner than he thought.

It’s probably like that episode of “Seinfeld” where Kramer kept going to work at that place where he wasn’t actually employed. Henry doesn’t want to draw attention to the fact that Theo isn’t actually getting paid.

    Dear Red Sox fans,

there is no way that Miguel Cabrera is being traded to Boston. can we not even start this please? it is NOT going to happen!!!!!!!!!!!! you had your chance to aquire him in 2007 but didnt. thats your problem, not mine. he is under contract for 5 more years and he will be with the tigers for all of them. people who like boston dont just get to snap their fingers and get any player they wan. if i hear the stupid “dice-k and a prospect not named kalish, igleasis, or doubront” thing again, someones gonna get hit. not only is it unrealistic to think that you could aquire him, but to think that you will not have to give up any top prospects is just plain stupid. im gonna stop this before it starts.

The Red Sox are going to have even more money to spend next year. Ortiz, Cameron, Drew, and Papelbon (all guys I could live without) add up to 35.75 Mil this year and they will all be gone next year. Maybe sign Ortiz for a one year, 5 mil contract and you can work from this:
Pitchers: Lester, Buchholz, Beckett, Lackey, Dice-K, Bard
Hitters: AGonz, Pedroia, Youk, Lowrie, Iglesias, Crawford, Ellsbury, Ortiz, Kalish

Think of all of this with 30mil. plus to spend? Hmmm…
Side note… The big free agents next winter are: Pujols, Fielder, Hill, K.Johnson, Reyes, A. Ramirez, Yadi Molina, Hart, CJ Wilson, H.Bell, and Broxton.
Who would be a good fit for Boston?

Blackcourt is correct. We have over $50MM coming off the books at the end of 2011, before we pay A-Gon on his extension. There is the matter of needing to extend Buchholz and possibly Ellsbury, so conservatively, I would say $25MM+ would be available without increasing payroll over the present $161MM commitment. Obviously, the Sox’ payroll could and probably will increase for 2012, to maybe $175MM.

I think AGon can put up similar numbers as Pujols now that he’s out of hitter’s hell PETCO, and plus he’s younger and won’t be signed for as long into his late thirties. I choose Agon to be completely honest.

I’d choose AGon too, but I still think Pujols will put up better numbers in Busch than AGon in Fenway. When the choice is between a $30M+/yr HOFer versus a $20M+/yr who’s still one of the best hitters in the game you really gotta ask the question “what else could we buy for that $10M we saved.”

Let’s begin Math Class shall we: Drew 14, Ortiz 12.5, Papelbon 12, Cameron 8, Scutaro 6, Wake 3, Tek 2 equals 58 million! Add in a 16 million raise to AGonz and theirs 42 million left under the luxury tax! Factor in 6 million in arb raises to Buchholz, Ellsbury, Salty and Bard and theirs still 36 million sitting around with only an opening at DH to fill as Kalish takes over RF and Iglesias/Lowrie at SS. Thus team is locked up for 2 years before Youk and Dicek expire and 4 before Lackey and Beckett expire! 36 million could easily add a major player or two to an already dominant looking team!

Anyone else slightly put off at the idea of revenue sharing and somehow these small market teams end up reducing payroll? The Red Sox added 85 mil to revenue sharing and the Yankees should have added easily that much. Plus other teams with larger payrolls…

So there’s about, what, 200 mil in revenue sharing given out to small market teams? Seems lame that these teams don’t increase payroll.

  11. Steve_in_MA

Does anyone else find the revenue sharing disclosure of the BoSox to be very interesting? From my understanding, this fund requires us to deposit 1/3 of baseball operations revenues, i.e., ticket sales. That means that the Fenway gate last season would have been $255MM. Of course, this doesn’t count concessions, product/logo licensing, rental income, TV/Radio/Cable broadcasting fees and advertising. That’s a pretty good number, given that they only have circa 37,000 seats to work with. That’s $85 per available seat, on average, for each and every home game.

I’m just saying that with extra money next year if we dont get Pujols or Feilder and Salty doesn’t play up to expectations, then getting Yadi is definitely an upgrade especially because he wont want to stick around in St. Louis when/if Pujols and he calls a really nice game, even if his offense isnt quite there. You have to think Yadi is pretty good at calling games when you look at Wainwright and Carpenter’s last two seasons and Garcia’s last year. I would love for the outfielders next year to be Crawford, Ellsbury, Kalish, Reddick/McDonald, but if Kalish or Ellsbury have a down year… hey look! There is 25 million bucks sitting on the table! And go head and sign Hart to maybe a 3 year, 36-45mil deal (pending on this season).
