Phillies Claim Brian Schlitter

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 20, 2011 at 2:22pm CDT

SUNDAY: Carpenter has cleared waivers and been assigned to Triple-A, tweets CSN's Jim Salisbury. He'll return to the Phillies' big league camp tomorrow as a non-roster player.

TUESDAY: Cliff Lee isn't the only pitcher the Phillies nabbed from the Yankees this winter. The Phillies announced that they claimed Brian Schlitter from New York off of waivers. Philadelphia designated Andrew Carpenter for assignment to create room for Schlitter, who was designated for assignment yesterday.

Schlitter was already claimed once this year; the Yankees acquired him from the Cubs last month. The right-hander appeared in seven games for the Cubs last year and surrendered 18 hits and five walks in eight innings, striking out seven. He spent most of the season at Triple-A Iowa, where he posted a 3.15 ERA with 8.3 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 45 2/3 innings in his first season at the highest level of the minors.

Carpenter, 25, has played for the Phillies in each of the last three seasons, but never for more than 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander posted a 4.05 ERA, 6.9 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 in 27 starts for the Phillies' Triple-A affiliate last year. Baseball America does not consider the 2006 second rounder one of the Phillies' top 30 prospects.

This is bigger than the Phils getting Lee from the clutches of the Yankees.

A small sample size, but WHIP just under 3 and a 3.15 ERA? Wowzers.

Actually Ben you might want to fix that. On B-R, it says his ERA was 12.38, not 3.15.

Was going to say, you have to be the luckiest pitcher in the world to have a WHIP that high and an ERA that low

Edit- Nevermind, now I misread that lol. Ignore these last 2 posts.

He wasn’t too bad in the Phils’ system before they traded him for Scott Eyre. I’d rather have him on the 40-man than Andrew Carpenter anyway.

Bearing an injury to a reliever, you probably won’t see either of them throw a single pitch in a Phillies uniform, or at least not until September call ups.

So what? If it came down to it, I’d rather have Schlitter called up than Carpenter. Lol

When did Cliff Lee pitch for the Yankees to have him “Nabbed” from them? Must be a really rare baseball card

The Yanks designated Schlitter for assignment. How exactly is this similar to the Yanks losing out on Cliff Lee? This is a pretty pathetic excuse to bring that debacle up again. Would it have been so hard to just say “The Phils claimed Schlitter from the Yanks”?

I still think it’s funny that people are still saying that Lee ‘stuck it to’ the Yankees, when it was the Rangers that offered the best overall deal for his services. So if anything, he ‘stuck it to’ the Rangers, not the Yankees.

I saw no one had mentioned that the new Phils AAA manager, Ryne Sandberg, managed him extensively in the minors with the Cubs, and I remember Sandberg praising him multiple times over the past few years, so I’m sure he had some input.

Lee was with the Yankees last season? Weird because I thought he finished the season with the Rangers. Phillies have nabbed one Yankees pitcher this offseason
