Ethier’s Agent Issues Statement

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 30, 2011 at 1:22pm CDT

WEDNESDAY, 1:22pm: Ethier's agent Nez Balelo issued a statement, acknowledging extension talks with the Dodgers but adding that an offer was never made.  He says Ethier is open to staying with the Dodgers for the rest of his career.  Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times has the full statement.

TUESDAY, 9:25pm: Andre Ethier told Tony Jackson of ESPNLosAngeles that he won't be surprised if the Dodgers trade or non-tender him after the season. The outfielder will earn $9.25MM this year and remains under team control through 2012 as an arbitration eligible player, though he knows that doesn't guarantee him a roster spot.

"If I don't play well, we have seen [the Dodgers] non-tender guys here," Ethier said. "If you do play well, sometimes they don't offer those guys arbitration because their salaries are too high."

Ethier won't be cheap in 2012, assuming typical production in '11, but he would figure to have value on the trade market even if the Dodgers decide his salary is rising to unacceptable levels. Ethier will play the 2012 season as a 30-year-old and he has never posted an OPS below .800 in five MLB seasons. He hit .292/.364/.493 with 23 homers last year, so teams may not flinch at a salary of $13MM or so (Ethier could surpass the $12.5MM salary Mark Teixeira earned in his final year as an arbitration eligible player).

Ethier's agent, Nez Balelo of CAA Sports, briefly discussed an extension with the Dodgers this spring, but talks did not develop and Ethier was not aware that they had occurred.

      nope

he’s got very arbitration-friendly numbers, but because of his defense he’s just not all that valuable

Would it be a good idea to sign Ethier, move him to left and Crawford to RF? Playing LF in Fenway for 81 games would limit his liabilities.

maybe if they non-tendered him and the price was right. otherwise i don’t expect he’ll represent enough upside over a kalish/reddick platoon to justify the salary+acquisition cost

That is why you aren’t a GM, because if I was Theo and some Dodgers official offered me Ethier for a life long AAA (Reddick) and a possible upside LF (Reddick) I would jump, because Ethier is great and those other guys have to prove something, only thing Ethier has to prove his his hand doesn’t hurt when he swings the bat.

Ethier is overrated though. He’s a slightly better hitter than JD Drew at the same time in their careers, but he’s a much worse defensive player. He would be expensive too.

that’s because all you’ve done is read the paper where ethier’s greatness is concerned. thankfully, epstein & co. do their homework

ethier would cost about $12MM plus those two prospects. for one year of production at the 2.5 WAR level at age 30. there is not value there at all. 37 outfielders produced more WAR than that last year. his overall talent is ordinary

kalish and reddick will start this year in AAA. ethier only saw about a 100 PA at AAA before his big league career took off, but here’s a comparison of their most recent AA numbers

                  ethier AA – 570 PA – .319/.385/.497
                  kalish AA – 200 PA – .293/.404/.527 (620 PA overall – .277/.360/.464)
                  redick AA – 300 PA – .277/.352/.520 (420 PA overall – .257/.332/.492)

kalish already has two more tools than ethier, who might be the most overrated OF in baseball. kalish has 30 SB speed, plus defense, and developing power to go with an already good bat. trading him and reddick (power and arm) for a $12MM broke man’s manny ramirez would be a serious mistake

C’mon now. Are you really going to use their minor lge numbers to compare them as mlb players? You can pretty much toss that out the window. The majors are littered with players who were similar in the minors but vastly different once they reached the majors.

I get it. You think Riddick and Kalish will be good mlb players. That might very well be the case. However, Ethier is a proven mlb hitter. Now his defense sucks and that’sa valid reason to pass on him as a FA. I can understand not wanting to use prospects toa cquire him any sooner.

But as a mlb hitter he has shown his worth.

Ethier was ranked 11th overall among all OF’ers in wOBA, 13th in OBP and 15th in ISO. Not sure which, if any, of those are park adjusted but him moving from spacious Dodger Stadium to Fenway can be a hug difference. He has pretty decent opposite field hitting ability.

there are no other numbers with which to compare them, chief

both reddick and kalish have more tools than ethier. unless they flop entirely, they’ll each very probably match his average yearly WAR

he is a good but not elite hitter with no other skills. he doesn’t have enough power to be a very valuable DH. broke man’s manny ramirez indeed

I think any conversation about Ethier comes with the disclaimer that he sucks defensively. His WAR was low because of his defense. His bating value was ranked 11th among all OF’ers in 2008 however.

Yeah but that was only one year, he hasn’t reproduced that before or since. Even disregarding his defense completely, which I don’t know why you would, 11th best is good – not great. If you look at him for the last three years, instead of focusing only on his career year, his bat has been slightly less valuable than Drew’s (based on wOBA).

Same here. Next year Kalish will be our rf for league minimum and if we want to spend we could just resign Drew, who is a better overall-around player than Ethier, for around 6 million, or half of what Ethier will make. He’s Pedroia’s buddy but he ain’t coming to Boston!

I’d be inclined to say no. Aside from the 30 HRs Ethier hit once I could see Kalish putting up numbers close to what Ethier usually does, with better speed and much better defense. Plus I don’t really think Crawford has the arm for RF.

You are correct, defensive stats are flawed. That’s why while I pay attention to them, I focus more on the scouting reports, which pretty much unanimously rip Ethier as a horrible defender. So after factoring in defensive metrics and scouting reports, we come to the safe conclusion that he’s a bad defender. Yet you point to fielding percentage and the eye test, and you think other people are naiive. Mhmmmmm

It’s not that I’m saying others are naive.. look at the picture I’m using. I’m only slightly biased. The reason I say watch the games, is because I’ve watched probably 90-95% of Andre’s games. Im no scout, just a fan, and I dont get the bad rating he gets. He is no gold glover, but he is definitely not a horrible defender, like alot of the posters here say he is. These guys are probably all on the east coast, and are in bed when Andre takes the field.

I would argue that most statisticians probably watch more games than the people who tell them to “watch the games”. And I’m 99% sure most scouts do, as well. And universally, those scouts tear Ethier’s defense apart.

        LAWL! Outfield errors.

Wily Mo Pena only had three errors in 2007, somebody get that man a Gold Glove!

(Clearly, you do not know how errors work, citing errors on an outfielder is one of the most ignorant things someone can do relating to baseball)

            Crash course:

Errors are generally only assessed when the fielder actually touches the ball. A routine fly ball could be coming straight at a fielder and he could outright run in fear of it and not get an error.

For an example, ever seen the Sandlot (If you haven’t, quite baseball until you have)? Remember the part where Smalls first tries to play with the others and Benny hits a ball to him which he falls over trying to get and the ball just bounces behind him and rolls to the fence? This, by MLB standards, generally would not be scored as an error.

This is why using errors to cite the quality of an outfielder is insanely ignorant. The vast majority of the time, when an outfielder misplays a ball, he simply doesn’t get to it. This is usually the result of poor routes rather than poor glovework which is guys like Wily Mo Pena can have a low error total, but still stink out loud. This is why we have stuff like UZR.

Now, to be fair, errors are stupid anyway. Jeter’s an awful fielder because he has no range, for example, but he doesn’t get a lot of errors because he doesn’t get to much. The failing of using errors to judge a player takes a severe turn when we get to the outfield, though.

I guess you missed the sarcasm in my comment to you. Using UZR as the only tool, to measure is as “ignorant” as you say that I am. All defensive stats are flawed, I dont care if it’s the +/-, UZR, or runs saved. I watch ALOT of baseball, and have now for over 35 years. I watch at least 150 Dodger games, and probably another 100 or so that are other teams. I’ve watched Andre play, alot. He isnt a gold glover, but he isnt the ‘horrible” defender that people here think he is.

Martin still had value when the Dodgers non-tendered. How much that value should be converted into actual salary was the debate.

If he isn’t, Ruben Amaro will be at his doorstep when FA starts. Ethier can have all the money coming off the books when Raul Ibanez’s contract expires this winter.

Leveraged bargaining ploy. He’ll get paid, hopefully by an LA owner not named McCourt (oh, I better close THAT door and clarify ACTUALLY IN LA, not that fantasy land place).

I would actually prefer Swisher over Ethier. Swish is like a year and a half older but he gives you just as much offense, can switch hit, is better defensively and has thrived in NY and withstood the NY glare of the media.

as a dodger fan, this pisses me off. he’s supposed to be a team leader and he says “yea well this could be my last year here”. way to show you want to be here man. after all the love this town gives him.
looking at it neutral, of course he is gonna want to leave. I mean, the owners suck and he’s smart enough to know that. The non-tender stuff though, I believe that’s just motivation. No way they non-tender him when he’s is very valuable.

I dont know man.. the guys a leftie. They’re different. Its like the poster said above me, its 80% Andre trying to motivate himself. He has quite the propensity for saying stupid things.. remember last year, when he had no idea who John Ely was, and he was pitching for the Dodgers that night? The funny part of it all… “Ethier’s agent, Nez Balelo of CAA Sports, briefly discussed an extension with the Dodgers this spring, but talks did not develop and Ethier was not aware that they had occurred.”

NOOOOOOOOOOO… I couldn’t stand Manny from the day he came. I love Casey Blake, (still, even with a big drop in production) and the trade that brought him here was just as important as Manny. I respected Mannys game, but I never expected anything. Especially when Boras was trying to negotiate his deal, and they wanted 7 years. Sort of tells you something that possibly the best right-handed hitter(this was before we knew about his PED use) only gets a two year contract, and from a team that desperately needed him, on alot of levels. You dont alienate a whole clubhouse, and then come into another, with a clean slate. He thought he was bigger than the team, and I feel he stunted the progress of alot of the younger Dodgers players.

Hilarious thread BTW.. Getting Non-tendered would mean he completely sucked this year. So if that was the case, a contending team would be willing to give him a fat contract? Makes sense.

if erm016 is talking about, starting pitching he doesnt know his facts. even if he talking about the bullpen. half the bullpen from last year either in the minors or not on the team. so we dont need pitching. dodgers more likely need to get younger at 3rd and getting better hitters. because starting pitcher no guy era over 4. then as for bullpen 2 out of the 6 pitcher have a era over 4. ones era is 4.04 and the other is only 4.98. so if you look at this year pitching and add there 2010 era. it be close to 4 era or a little over. because as of right now not adding the injury pitchers 8 out of 10 pitchers we have, have a era under 4.

Theres some good young pitching in the minors too. I got to see Rubby DeLarosa pitch tonight, and boy.. he is impressive. I know.. prospects are what they are, prospects. But I think that kid could pitch anywhere. He looked good. Im pretty excited about zach Lee as well, whom Logan White is saying is more polished at his age, than Kershaw and Billingsley.
