Non-Roster Notes: Chavez, Stairs, Atkins

By Steve Adams | March 20, 2011 at 2:09pm CDT

As we cruise through Spring Training and gear up for Opening Day, let's take a look at some news on some notable non-roster invitees around the league…

  • Whether or not Yankees manager Joe Girardi wants to acknowledge it, there's "no way" Eric Chavez doesn't make the team out of camp, tweets ESPN's Wallace Matthews.
  • Nationals manager Jim Riggleman told MLB.com's Bill Ladson there's a "good chance" that Matt Stairs breaks camp with the team.
  • MLB.com's Jennifer Langosch writes that Garrett Atkins is hoping to re-kindle his career with the Pirates, but to this point has done nothing to distinguish himself from his competition (Steve Pearce, Andy Marte, and Josh Fields). Atkins was just 4-30 this spring entering play today.

Good for Chavez. I feel bad for talented guys that just can’t stay healthy and the Yankees picked up two of them (Chavez & Prior). Nice that at least one has an opportunity to make a comeback. He doesn’t have to do anything but be a decent back-up for A-Rod once a week or so.

what’s going on with prior. Is he no good? I haven’t heard anything about him in a while.

A day or two ago he was throwing in the mid 90’s which he made look effortless

Don’t they both have the chance to make a comeback?? or just one?? Prior will be in the minors and may make it up to the big club, so I think they both have a chance. I guess what you mean is only one for now will be on the big club to start the season.
We still don’t know though, I think they both could have the opportunity…right??

It is amazing to see Stairs still sticking with teams. It is tough to believe that a guy that just swings as hard as he can every time can survive this long. He is one guy that is very tough not to cheer for.

Matt Stairs is kind of taking the Julio Franco phylosophy. Don’t retire until no one will give you a contract.

If Matt Stairs gets on the team and Nix doesn’t, Riggleman deserves to be fired

For one, it’s Mike Rizzo’s desicion. And two…. huh?

I’ve watched a lot of Nats games this spring, ballpark is down the street and I would take Nix over Stairs if it was my team…I would have to have someone in the “NL”, who could at least play the field a little. I probably would want both, but is there room on the team for both…If the Nats were in the AL, maybe I’d lean towards Stairs…Nix has impressed me with the stick but I would want Stairs to pitch hit in the 8th and 9th with men on base.
    Tough choice for Riggleman.

Matt Stairs better break camp, or I’d love for my Cubs to pick him up again. He’s one of the best parts about Major League Baseball.
