Marlins, Omar Infante Agree To Extension

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 26, 2011 at 11:36pm CDT

The Marlins have reached an agreement with second baseman Omar Infante on a two-year contract believed to be worth $8MM, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.  Infante passed his physical Tuesday, tweets Frisaro.

The Marlins acquired Infante in last November's Dan Uggla trade and plugged the 29-year-old Venezuelan in at second base this year. He has a .277/.316/.381 line in 629 plate appearances in his first season for the Marlins and final season before free agent eligibility.

Combine his 2011 performance with his All-Star 2010 campaign and you get a projected Type B ranking. That means the Marlins would have obtained a compensatory pick in next year's draft if Infante had turned down an offer of arbitration to sign with another club as a free agent.

On most nights, this would easily be the biggest Marlins news, but that's not the case tonight. Jack McKeon announced that he won't return as manager in 2012 and the White Sox released Ozzie Guillen, who is expected to sign with Florida. For even more Marlins links click here.

it was sarcasm.. the marlins would have been better off trading for a pep talk from chipper jones

Good sign, He’s good player with a very solid defense at 2B. Alot of teams would’ve wanted him.

ya for a bench role maybe.. that .316 obp has no business in a starting lineup

Solid defense is somethingthe fish were lacking at that position the last few seasons. Watching infante this season, has really opened my eyes when It comes to his defense. Offense/obp? well, he def could be better. .316 should be higher for an everyday player.

Brian sabean is furious he can’t add another veteran low obp hacker to his lineup! He probably had the 3 year 21 million dollar offer ready.

Yeah because Sabean hasn’t won a World Series with that approach recently…right?

Omar is not really there to post Dan Uggla numbers at the plate. He is there for his gold glove caliber defense at 2B. The philosophy of the club values defense, especially in the infield. Besides, its not like the Fish were one Dan Uggla away from a playoff run this year anyways. Their SP and lack of consistency from the CF position were obvious set backs this year.

I like Infante a lot and he can play a lot of positions without sucking, but he IS NOT a gold glover at any of them.

Sorry dude but his .990 fielding percentage says otherwise. He may not actually win a gold glove because he is not flashy with the glove, but he does play that caliber of defense. Check the stats.

Fielding % is not exactly the best way to measure overall defensive ability.  Omar’s big weakness is his lack of range….though 2B is his best defensive position.

Infante’s UZR is 8.0, 4th best in MLB, 2nd best in NL.  RngR is  a 6.0, good enough for 5th in MLB.  RF is 4th in MLB.  His OOZ is pretty middle of the pack and ZR is eh.  I’ll take soft hands and a cool head any day at 2nd base.  I think you’re fooling yourself if you don’t think he plays gold glove defense.
