White Sox Release Ozzie Guillen From Contract

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 26, 2011 at 10:01pm CDT

The worst-kept secret in Major League Baseball has now become official. Ozzie Guillen will no longer manage the White Sox and it appears that he'll sign a new deal with the Marlins, who would send compensation to Chicago if a deal with Guillen becomes official.

The White Sox announced tonight that they have released Guillen from his contract at his request. He won't be in uniform for the season's final two games, according to the team, which retains rights to compensation if another club hires Guillen to manage in 2012. White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf says he appreciates Guillen's work and wishes him the best.

“We certainly cannot thank Ozzie enough for all he has done during his eight seasons as manager of the Chicago White Sox, highlighted by an unforgettable 2005 World Series championship,” he said.

The next time Guillen dons a Major League uniform, it will likely be for the Marlins. His deal with Florida is expected to be for three years, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter). Guillen had one year remaining on his deal in Chicago, where he had managed since 2004.

The White Sox will obtain two minor leaguers as compensation, according to Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com. They were hoping for a "decent prospect" from the Marlins, but weren't expecting anyone on Florida's 40-man roster, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (on Twitter).

Current manager Jack McKeon won't be back in Florida next year and the Marlins started a complete search for his replacement, even though they already appear to have decided on Guillen. The Marlins interviewed third base coach Joe Espada, hitting coach Eduardo Perez and Nationals coach Bo Porter today for the vacancy.

Guillen leaves the Windy City with a record of 678-617. The White Sox made two playoff appearances under Guillen: they won the World Series in 2005, Guillen's second season, and lost to the Rays in the 2008 ALDS.

Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, who first reported that Guillen was out as manager, says there will likely be substantive changes to Chicago’s coaching staff. Pitching coach Don Cooper already has a deal on the table to stay in the organization, according to Cowley. Bench coach Joey Cora is expected to join Guillen with the Marlins, according to Morosi (on Twitter). First, Cora will manage Chicago's last two regular season games, according to MLB.com's Scott Merkin (on Twitter).  Tony La Russa and Buddy Bell are expected to be considered for Chicago's managing gig, tweets Morosi.

The White Sox and Marlins discussed a Guillen for Mike Stanton trade last offseason (don't expect a substantive return for the White Sox if the deal goes through). Though they're rare, there is some precedent for player-manager swaps. Following the 2002 season, the Rays sent Randy Winn to Seattle for minor leaguer Antonio Perez to compensate the Mariners for losing Lou Piniella.

They can give the White Sox a box of oranges and some sand as far as I’m concerned. Miami will soon come to the realization that Ozzie sucks. Enjoy disgusting language after every loss and refusing to bench .160 BA players.

If they resign Infante, that could make sense. They could rely on Dominguez next year for second base or third if they don’t sign Reyes.

What pie in the sky world are you living in that the Marlins would A)have the resources to sign Jose Reyes and B) That Reyes would agree to switch positions.

I doubt Reyes will want to play 2B again. He tried it briefly when the Mets had K. Matsui at SS in 2004. They promptly ended that experiment.

I would be very pleased with Coghlan coming to Chicago. I don’t think it will happen, but it gives the Sox a young left handed leadoff man, which will be a vacancy this season. Not saying he’s going to turn it around, but I think he would be a nice addition. The Sox should have traded Ozzie when they (allegedly) had a chance to get Logan Morrison.

Ozzie wrote in his own blog (since taken down, surely because of some sort of rule or stipulation) that he accepted a position with the Marlins. Once the season ends, the White Sox will get something from the Marlins.

“Guillen also expressed an increasing distain for the sabermetrics staff members who made less frequent appearances during batting practice this season.” (from the Chicago Tribune story)

Ouch.  That can only be Rick Hahn.

I just cant come to understand how a team could want such a annoying/mediocre manager so badly. Is it just because he isnt American? This whole thing just seems weird and ignorant too me.

No.1 Miami has a large Latin population so Guillen is a natural attraction.

No.2 Guillen is a wreck waiting to happen which attracts all people.

No.3 This adds up to more people at the ballpark and more money in Loria’s pocket.

No.4 Managers don’t make a heck of a lot of difference in a team’s performance. It’s the players (especially one’s with career years) that make a manager look good.

1 down. Now please get rid of Kenny, easily the worst GM in baseball.

That is completely wrong. I have no idea how you could think this and also be a Sox fan. He isn’t perfect, but overall he has been far from the worst in baseball. If you are blaming him this year, you shouldn’t. This team looks great on paper and I think will have a big comeback year next year. I didn’t meet a single Sox fan that was not pumped for the team this year. I think Dunn will work out for us. Bad years happen, this was his first ever. Its far more likely he returns to form. Rios has slowly been coming back to form over the 2nd half as well.

Heck, look at the now ex GM on the Northside. You think he is better than KW?

not a kenny lover here…he has had his mistakes in the past but besides peavy(who is off the books after next season and might actually provide something next year) Rios who kenny trying to block the tigers which blew up in his face and trading away hudson and gio he really has not had that many bad deals…dont say dunn because no one knew he was going to be bad this year…but he got danks, thornton, thome, floyd and pods back in the day for literally nothing of value. Manny didnt work out but didnt bust either his numbers in a sox uni were pretty good…Griffey put buts in the seats and actually helped get the sox into the post season..Also he was able to sign sale who was thought to not be sign able which is why he was one of the top pitchers in that draft but fell to the sox.

so how is kenny one of the worst in baseball? best?…no but far from worst

One of the worst if not the worst in the last few seasons.  Nick Swisher?  Aquiring and trading..what’d he get?  Chris Young?  The list goes on and on and on.

Outspoken Guillen goes to a franchise that doesn’t allow anyone to speak their mind. That is too funny. It wont last a year.

“The White Sox and Marlins discussed a Guillen for Mike Stanton trade last offseason (don’t expect a substantive return for the White Sox if the deal goes through).”

Wow. That would have been a terrible deal for the Marlins. I can’t believe they would have even discussed that.

They didn’t. The player the Sox wanted was Logan Morrison.

Good riddance! Great news for the White Sox. Bad news for the tigers and Twins because the Sox will play better in the absence of this horrid distraction and professional windbag.

Also potentially great news for the Phils and Nationals if the Marlins sign OzGui.

How are Sox fans not calling for Kenny Williams head?  He’s the responsible party in all of this and comletely exposed for his horrible deals and contracts.
