Mets To Let Other Teams Set Market For Reyes

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | October 28, 2011 at 4:50pm CDT

The Mets intend to allow other clubs to set the market for Jose Reyes this offseason, according to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News. Mets officials have suggested that the Nationals, Marlins and Angels could bid heavily on the free agent shortstop this offseason and the Mets would prefer that others clubs establish the market for him.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post suggested a week ago that the Mets don't want to offer Reyes more than four years and Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog hears from team sources who give him the same impression. If that’s the case, there’s a strong chance Reyes’ best offer will come from another organization. The 28-year-old finished the season well and may have a case for a $100MM contract.

Smart business move. Why throw out a number that other teams wouldn’t have paid anyway? I don’t really understand why the Marlins would be interested though…

The whole thing is just confusing. When they had Einhorn preparing to buy they would have had incoming funds which would have been likely used to sign Reyes. But after no deal was reached the entire thing just seemed like a major stall tactic by the Wilpons.

I’m kinda wondering if Alderson was kept out of the whole loop. My guess is initially he was promised the funds to retain Reyes but after the deadline was told “sorry, you have to make new plans.” I think this whole thing is a massive Wilpon screw up.

Let me just educate you a bit. Enhorn was looked at as a necessity when the Wilpons thought they were getting sued for $1 billion. When they found out that that wasn’t the case, they felt that they didn’t need him anymore. He wanted the Mets to lose, so the Wilpons would have to sell their team, and the Wilpons didn’t like that. Reyes wasn’t traded because, at that time the Mets weren’t 100% out of the race, and they felt Reyes really wanted to stay. He still might, this is all Alderson, he knew everything going in, and he still does. Your welcome

You forgot to mention that by the time Reyes had two stays in the Disabled List this season.  If I’m not mistaken, the first stay was sometime before the trade deadline.

          If you did, my apologies.

Yep, because the best time to trade a player is right after they come off the disabled list.

They don’t want to bid against themselves anymore? Why not, it worked out so well when they got Jason Bay…

Actually it did work out cause Bay only got 4 years and didn’t get nowhere near the 7 year $126 million dollar contract like Jayson Werth did…

So stupid, if they traded him mid season, they end up with a top prospect, instead they hang on to him, and let him go through FA to get a 1st round which guarantees literally nothing.

Of course not a whole lot, but more than a draft pick especially considering who they could have gotten back.

The Mets are no longer inept in drafting and player development. We now have a GM is finally willing to pay over slot, so who knows? We might end up with the next Reyes. Or maybe Reyes stays. Too early to say.

Don’t forget that Reyes could have been traded for prospects equivalent to Alex Escobar and Fernando Martinez.

Out of pure curiosity, what makes you think this FO is any better at developing than the previous. I’m not saying they aren’t, but they definitely haven’t proved anything yet.

They would have gotten a top prospect, that’s how you know. His value was so high that almost any team would be willing to give up a top prospect for him. If Beltran was given away for Wheeler, Reyes would’ve been traded for at least a prospect of that value.

Omar Minaya’s farmhands were shown to have the least service time in the minor leagues, and to be among the lowest success rate in the majors. The prospects were so horribly mismanaged (i.e. Pelfrey, F-Martinez, Mejia) that you can’t get any worse. Plus Alderson has the merit of being at the helm of the Athletics success in the late 1980’s, in which some of his products included Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, and we know how that worked out (the steroids later in their careers notwithstanding).

If you have been paying close enough attention, you know that as an organization they are steadily progressing independent from the financial turmoil they may face. But if one thing is certain, they don’t have anything to prove to you. If you want a GM who will work to appease the fanbase, go call Phillips.

                Omah did draft IKE though.

Though who knows if Ike Davis even gets handled well enough, case in point this injury of his and the random unknown status.

Ike was rushed too, so I don’t think we should go overboard giving Omar credit because his stupid decision worked out.

Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire you say? So alderson is going to be on the look out for prospects who clearly take steroids? I think that will probably hurt The Metropolitans in this era of drug testing.

please look at mark in the 80s when sandy drafted him. its beyond obvious he didnt start his career on roids. its the early 90s when hes body transformed. well after being a major league player. i think he started talking roids after 91, when he was embrassed about the miserable season.

This would be a great start for Jerry Dipoto as the new GM. Finally getting the lead-off hitter they desired since Figgy. The Angels made a push to acquire him mid-season but the Mets declined. With Reyes in the lineup i’m calling it now-playoffs.

You know its funny some Mets fans just want to bit(h. If Sandy trades him/or doesn’t trade him, the Mets are stupid. If they retain him and he does not ad up the Mets are fools. If they trade him and the Mets don’t get enough in return the Mets are idiots! People it is a new era with the Mets. In order to rebuild it is going to take time. The Mets are going to be like the Twins, A’s, Royals, and other small ballclubs that use their farm system, but have some cash. But that’s right some Mets fans have the Yankee mentality, overpay to win at any cost. Be patient, our time is coming!

That was the Omar mentality, sign every player on the open market, and there was no way they could lose. Instead, we walk out with THREE straight collapses (2009 just happened a lot earlier, but they were in first) and unmovable crap contracts.

I look forward to DePo and Sandy rebuilding this farm system and making this team relevant again. He did it for the Athletics, who didn’t have nearly the funds the Mets have even in this dark age, and they had a dynasty with three straight pennants and a world series championship!

We’ve been hearing that for over 20yrs.  It’s one thing when your team is just bad, it’s another when the owner, GM and other top executive are constantly involved in something that embarrasses the franchise.  It’s like throwing salt in a wound

It could be worse, we could be rooting for the Chicago Cubs (no WS title since 1908) or the Cleveland Indians (no WS title since 1948).

Since 1986, the Mets have appeared in postseason games in three occassions:  1999 (NLCS loss against Atlanta), 2000 (WS loss against the Yankees), and 2006 (NLCS loss against St. Louis).  It’s not that the Mets have been bad throughout all those years.

Also, the Mets have a new GM and other top executives that are right now not involved in embarrassing the franchise (the Mets owner is a different story, well known by those who follow the Mets).

EDIT: Whoops! I almost forgot 1988 (NLCS loss against Dodgers).

I still hold out hope that Reyes will return. The Mets, contrary to what buffoons like Joel Sherman (among other things, he said without out doubt that “the Mets will not get Wheeler for Beltran”) say, aren’t offering him chump change. They aren’t idiots in Flushing anymore, if they honestly thought he would accept 4/65 or something like that than yes, he should have been traded.
If the Mets offer him 6/108 guaranteed with a 7 year option, but the Nats or Marlins or Giants give him 7/145 guaranteed, I bet he likes it in NY and appreciates us fans enough to stay.

I see the Tigers being one of the aggressive teams to make a bid for Reyes. Probably one of the top 5 to make an attempt. I see it probably being a drawn out thing by Reyes and where ever he goes he immediately makes a team better, and make them move whoever they have to third base…..”I DUNNO….THIRD BASE!” Good luck to who ever gets him.

The money for Reyes would then probably mean no money for Cole Hamels, who is set to be a FA after 2012.

With Halladay and Lee getting older, I think they invest their money in “Hollywood”.

No, I think they start he year with MiniMart or Valdez and let Galvis take over in June. I’d rather see Michael Cuddyer, ARam or both compared to Rollins or Reyes.

Cuddy and ARam could get 10 to 12 mill a piece. Reyes may get 18 and Rollins may get 14…

Cuddy is versatile and is a great clubhouse guy.

      Victorino
      Utley
      Pence
      Howard
      Cuddy LF
      ARam/Polly 3B
      Ruiz
      Galvis
      Pitcher

Is a good lineup. They could also trade Dom for a 3B of the future if they can’t sign ARam.
