Yankees To Decline Damaso Marte’s Option

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | October 19, 2011 at 2:39pm CDT

The Yankees will announce that they're declining their 2012 option for Damaso Marte, according to Mark Hale of the New York Post (on Twitter). The left-hander missed the entire 2011 season after undergoing shoulder surgery last October. He'll get a $250K buyout instead of a $4MM salary for 2012.

Marte, 36, signed a three-year, $12MM deal after the 2008 season and contributed just 31 regular season innings over the course of the past three seasons. However, he was effective in the 2009 playoffs and has a 3.48 ERA with 9.5 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 over the course of an 11-year career (hat tip to River Ave. Blues). If healthy, he could obtain a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training this offseason.

Agreed 100 percent red sox and Yankees waste so much money and they become major bust I hate it MLB baseball should have a salary cap to increase chances of teams like Oakland minisota Tampa bay winning world series and keeping the players they drafted like Crawford or Hudson

Learn how to spell Minnesota then get back to me dude. Let’s make this clear. Even with a salary cap the Rays aren’t spending the $90 mil salary floor that would probably come with a salary cap. This isn’t the NFL or NBA and the sooner you realize that the better off we will all be.

worth every penny for that one pitch (slider?) to Howard that struck him out in the final game of the world series, imo.

6 years 112.7M ?  you do realize that’s not even 19M a year and he currently makes almost 22 a year and hes opting out for more money.

        maybe if its a 6 year 142.7M contract…
