Nationals, Wang Nearing Deal

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 2, 2011 at 4:17pm CDT

The Nationals are nearing a new contract with Chien-Ming Wang, according to Amanda Comak of the Washington Times. Agent Alan Nero doesn't expect a deal by the time free agency begins tonight, but the sides have agreed to terms "conceptually."

Wang's agent, Alan Nero, told Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post that the right-hander drew interest from six teams. The 31-year-old made 11 starts in 2011 after missing the 2010 campaign. He posted a 4.04 ERA with 3.6 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9 in 62 1/3 innings for Washington this past season. Wang's 53.4% ground ball rate was in line with his career mark of 57.5% and was likely a factor in teams' interest. MLB.com's Bill Ladson also reported on the deal.

For how much? I’m still guessing 2 years/$6MM with escalator clauses that could take it to $10MM.

That seem a lot for a guy who has pitched less than 100 innings in last two seasons. He should have an incentive based deal around two million or so. Anyways, glad to see one spot down. Now one more rotation spot to fill.

I think it would be easier if the contract wasn’t in English – It might help Wang being able to read that contract language.

I knew the Nationals would extend Wang.

Glad to see the Nationals jumped on Wang early

Hope talks with Wang don’t go beyond four hours

Looks like Wang will fill the hole in the Nats rotation

Wang sure won’t be looking limp after this extension

Wang on contract talks: “Things are looking up.”

Is anyone else impressed by Wang, and his loyalty to the Nationals after they stuck it out with him? It says he had interest from 6 other teams, I would wager at least one of them were offering more than the Nats..Nice job Wang, Nice job..

depends who the other 6 teams are..

3 could have been in the independant league, 2 in japan and one was my softball team

I agree. It’s always nice to see a player reward a team for a chance like this. Without their support, he could be out of the game.

I’m pretty sure Yankees offered to match whatever offer Wang could get from the market after they released him. Yankees just didn’t want to pay 6 mil or whatever for him. I guess I would be pissed too if I was Wang and I wasn’t such a loyal fan.

According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the Nationals and Chien-Ming Wang have agreed to a one-year deal.

The details of the contract still need to be finalized, but that should be done by Thursday. Wang, 31, posted a cool 4.04 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 11 starts this season while registering a 53.4 groundball percentage. If he can keep his sinker working and maintain his health in 2012, he should be a fine No. 3 starter for the Nationals.
