Pirates Claim Hefner, Jeroloman

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 18, 2011 at 2:08pm CDT

The Pirates announced that they claimed right-hander Jeremy Hefner off of waivers from the Padres and claimed catcher Brian Jeroloman off of waivers from the Blue Jays. Pittsburgh has 36 players on its 40-man roster after outrighting Matt Pagnozzi to Triple-A.

Hefner, 25, started 28 games for the Padres' Triple-A affiliate in 2011, posting a 4.98 ERA with 6.9 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 in 157 1/3 innings. He has a 3.84 ERA with 7.9 K/0 and 2.8 BB/9 in 688 2/3 career minor league innings over the course of five seasons.

Jeroloman joined the Blue Jays at the end of the 2011 season, but never entered a game. The 26-year-old, who has a career .378 OBP after six years in the minors, posted a .240/.335/.295 line at Triple-A Las Vegas this past season

Pagnozzi was outrighted so that Jeroloman could be placed on the roster?  LOL

Jeroloman has 2 years of optional assignments remaining…which makes him a good candidate to be backup to backup catcher and playing in AAA

Jays’ back-up catching situation isn’t looking so great for next year at the moment.

Too early, maybe Sept call up but no chance he makes the team!!

Jeroloman leaving the organization has no bearing on who will be back up catcher next season any ways. Unless you’re talking about AAA. Then yeah, Jays gotta find somebody to back up D’Arnaud.

Jeroloman  is a defense only catcher suited for backup duty.

Bet there are better options out there!

Kelly Shopach is someone I think Jays should go after for backup job.

Defense only catcher that threw out 15% of the runners last year. Yikes.

Hefner? Guess the Pirates won’t be lacking for porn in the clubhouse if he makes the squad.

I understand that Neil is attempting to go the infinitesimally cheapest way out, but why not protect one of the 46 Rule V choices who qualify throughout their system or at least pick up the Luek Van Mil monstrosity?  I think Hefner might be a decent choice, but Jeroloman I question???
