Red Sox Front Office Notes: Epstein, Shipley, Minaya

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 17, 2011 at 3:44pm CDT

Boston’s managerial search includes Bobby Valentine, according to reports today. Here are some notes on changes to the team’s front office…

  • The Red Sox and Cubs won't determine compensation for Theo Epstein until after the Rule 5 draft takes place in early December, according to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat. "It’s very amicable. Lots of jokes about it," Epstein said. "We’ll see if we can get something done after the Rule 5 Draft.” Epstein left the Red Sox for the Cubs after the regular season and compensation has yet to be determined.
  • The Red Sox are expected to remove VP of player personnel and international operations Craig Shipley from his current position, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com. Shipley, a former MLB player, pushed for the deal that sent Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to Boston for Hanley Ramirez and Anibal Sanchez.
  • The Red Sox may have interest in former Expos and Mets GM Omar Minaya, according to Maureen Mullen of CSNNE.com.

    Well…
    1) My guess is compensation has pretty much been decided, but they want to wait until after rule 5 because of the player(s) involved.
    2) Hoping this means Shipley is getting a promotion
    3) Really hoping the interest is for Minaya to serve hot dogs in Fenway.

Why would Shipley get a promotion? Because of all the top international talent filling up the Sox system?!

See above. Maybe your team is in another division and you haven’t watched your main competition absolutely smoke yours in international scouting, but Shipley getting canned is the first positive for this team since early September. He simply has not delivered in those markets.

Yeah. It would be scary just for him to be employed by them, knowing that maroon is just a promotion away from leading them down to ruin like he did Montreal and the NY.. better safe than sorry.. let someone else hire him to sling dogs ;-)

minaya has some talent as a scout; that’s why the blue jays were interested in him. he just can’t be given any decision-making authority

I actually think I would like Minaya as international scouting director; him not being a good GM doesn’t mean he isn’t good at scouting.

They didn’t fire him because of that deal, did they? It wasn’t that bad of a deal. Don’t get me wrong, the Marlins won it, but not by a ton. That trade is the reason they won the WS in 2007.

It strange that the Cubs & Red Sox cannot decide upon compensation for Epstein flying the coop for fresher waters in Chi-town.  What is so difficult here?  Makes one wonder if there isn’t some kind of a multiple player deal in the works that will include the so called “compensation to be named later” for Theo’s services.
