Ryan Doumit, who was already weighing multiple contract offers, received offers from two more teams today, tweets ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. Agent Paul Cobbe tells Crasnick that Doumit could sign within the next few days.
Matt Sosnick, another of Doumit's representatives at Sosnick Cobbe Sports, said earlier this month that his client was willing to catch, play the outfield, or DH. As Crasnick tweeted this week, there are teams that view Doumit as a combo player who could spend time at all three positions, making him more popular to AL clubs. However, Crasnick adds in another tweet that one of today's offers came from a National League team.
Doumit, 30, was limited to 236 plate appearances in 2011 due to injuries, but made the most of his playing time, hitting .303/.353/.477. Pittsburgh declined its option on the longtime Pirate at season's end.
Marlins.
The won’t have any money left after signing Pujols, Reyes, Buehrle and possibly Madson.
#ilovesarcasm
My comment was sarcasm.. although I wouldnt be surprised if they were the NL team since they have checked in on everyone
Will they go after the sausage race bratwurst from Milwaukee?
I bet he’s represented by Scott Boras.
dont forget trading for david wright
Anaheim should sign him, but there’s probably too much of a logjam at DH for him to get starts there when he isn’t catching. Even though his D is bad, I’d still sign him as a catcher since his offense provides good value. I wish him the best, always a class guy in Pittsburgh and always a strong bat, but just couldn’t stay healthy.
Always a class guy? Surely you’re thinking of someone else. The Doumit I remember was a lazy, no hustle malcontent.
Would he back up?
See him as a great fit for the Tigers. Could spell Avila, DH when V Mart catches…..should bot be very expensive.
I hope Detroit is in on him. Can back up Avila and play some RF. Perfect fit, as far as I’m concerned.
I see him as a fit too, because he would fill a few needs. However if multiple teams are involved and that drives up his price a little… no thanks.
Exactly my line of thinking. He actually seems to profile better at RF than any other position, surprisingly.
I suspect he’ll be way to expensive for what the Tigers needs are, especially at catcher- I mean we already have 2 of the 3 American League AllStar catchers on the roster (yes, I know VMart isn’t much of a catcher but still…). I would rather they try to land Aaron Hill or Kelly Johnson to fill the hole at second. I also wish they hadn’t tendered Young but I would still consider offering an incentive laden contract for Grady Sizemore since I’m guessing Boesch will at least be platooning with Young if not playing full time in his place and that would fill the need for a leadoff hitter. David DeJesus would also be a possibility in that role as well. I think the Tigers should also take a chance on someone like Bedard or maybe Colon or even Chen with a 1 year deal at the back of the rotation because I’m not convinced we haven’t already seen the best Porcello has to offer.
I hope they stay out of the Reyes bidding because that will pretty much take all of the $$ they have to spend and it’s almost a sure bet he’ll miss some time with injuries
Too many Pittsburgh people on the Tigers staff. I’m guessing they know better than to sign him.
Cardinals?
he wouldn’t be a fit, we got cruz for backup now
Ya but if he is willing to play some RF that would not only give Molina some good rest but Berkman as well
Plus if Pujols leaves and Berkman moves to 1B, Doumit could see time in RF.
Hope the rays are one of those teams. could see doumit in a Rays uniform and would fit there style of versaltility
Orioles???? Orioles do need a back up catcher for Matt “Switch Hitting Jesus” Wieters
Twins make sense, too.
Perfect AL player, mostly a DH but can also serve as a backup C or 5th OF if necessary. Nice player to have when thinking interleague. He sure can hit, no problems there.
I think the Rays get him, because they are the most intelligently-run team in MLB and understand things that other teams don’t. I’d probably be a real fan if they weren’t based out of Florida. Its a shame they’re the Rays.
I would like to see him land in Seattle to platoon with Olivo, and get plate appearances at DH and LF. Assuming Doumit is willing to play LF part-time.
I hope one of those teams was the Angels. He would provide a much needed bat at the C position and part time duties with Conger.
Maybe the Mariners. Platoon him with Olivo and put him in left field or DH.
blue jays have liked Doumit in the past. Wouldn’t surprise me if they’re poking around here.
To replace arencibia? why?
You’ve seen him pretend to catch, right?
Youve seen him “pretend” to hit bombs right? Give the kid some time.
He’s a 1B/DH at best. I haven’t seen ANYTHING that believes he’s truly a catcher, but will stay there because his bat is good enough.
You’re confusing the heck out of me, because that’s what a lot of people say about Doumit. And that’s all the more reason why the Blue Jays are unlikely to sign him.
He’s probably going to be their DH in a season or two anyway once D’arnaud comes up.
Doesn’t make any sense to replace him with Doumit in the meantime though considering Doumit can’t even pretend to catch.
DID YOU STOP WATCHING BASEBALL AFTER APRIL/MAY? I AM SORRY FOR THE TREMENDOUS ILLNESS YOU MUST HAVE FACED.
Look up Beyond the Boxscore’s defensive catcher ratings from this season. Even with his bat, Arencibia was THE WORST defensive catcher in the major leagues this year at #114. Nice try.
ZZZZZIPP TRUSTS THE DULCET TONES OF ALAN ASHBY MORE THAN DEFENSIVE MATRICES. ARENCIBIA IMPROVED.
BACK UP, G: NO ONE’S TALKING ABOUT REPLACING ARENCIBIA, WE’RE TALKING ABOUT BACKUP.
We’re? How do you know what hes talking about? AND WHY ARE YOU YELLING?
BACKUP SEEMS MORE LOGICAL THAN REPLACEMENT, AND HE DID NOT INDICATE. ZZZZIPP HAS A CONDITION: THE CONDITION IS THAT ZZZZIPP MUST SOMETIMES TYPE IN ALL-CAPS DUE TO HIS LIFE CIRCUMSTANCES.
ALSO IN THE TORONTO MARKET DOUMIT AS A BACKUP FOR ARENCIBIA IS “A THING DISCUSSED IN MANY QUARTERS.”
Braves…our catching situation is dire!!!
Sarcasm? Atlanta has the best catching situation in the major leagues possibly.
Yup, sarcasm. In all seriousness we do need a DH :)
I’m hoping the Twins are in on him.
dodgers please!
bucco fan here he needs to be in the al guy can hit but his defense is a liabiltiy
he’s an absolute perfect fit for Detroit. hope they get him
Mostly AL teams in on him. So that list includes:
Angels, Mariners, Red Sox, Orioles and possibly the Tigers, though I don’t see it and the Twins.
Hard to say who he signs with, but given their need and money available, I’m thinking the Mariners land him.
As an Angels fan I’d love it if Scioscia got over Jeff Mathis’ defense, but that won’t happen and they already have a possible offensive backstop in Hank Conger, though he hit poorly last season.
Gardy has the same infatuation with Butera’s defense. I feel your pain.
@meanguygary:disqus has the same idea as myself. Blue Jays have expressed interest before, and Arencibia/Doumit would be a pretty good offensive tandum (defense is kinda lacking).
DH and 1B are ways to keep his bat in the line-up, maybe even LF (RF? Really?).
The Jays have a spot on their 15 day DL he could fill.
Can’t see why he can’t spell 1B on top of those positions.
you really have never seen doumit play have you.
this is the problem with playing only yanks/sox on tv. you think ryan no–mit can play defense hell can probably spell short too
I said that because the article said he was willing to play the outfield on top of catching and DH’ing. Plenty of poor-defensive catchers spend time spelling 1B, but not the outfield (Piazza, Posada, Victor Martinez, Napoli). If he’s willing to play the outfield, I don’t see why he wouldn’t play 1B, which many people find to be an easier position for catcher.
I’m not a Yank or Sox fan so geez, no need to be so pretentious about being a Pirates fan.
Yeah, but the thing is that he may even be a worse 1B than C. Whoever signs him should take his gloves and hide them from him.

Put those names on a dartboard and you are a pro sports writer.
bamscore
i see him in detroit or with the rays. if he wants a ring he would come to detroit!
I don’t know what kind of offers he has or what he’s looking for, but there’s a definite fit in Tampa.
I could see the Mets in a platoon with Thole.
Yes. He has “Met” written all over him. He can hit right behind J. Bay in the lineup. Perfect fit.
Im sure the guy wants to hit at least 1 homerun this year
he’s a better left handed hitter than right, so a platoon with another lefty is unlikely.
A perfect fit for the Rays…Can play OF and C, can DH, has some pop and the Rays love versatile players….Doumit’s best fit is the Rays!
Angels. Bye Mathis.
Giants, maybe? Posey needs a back-up, and Bochy loves multi-position guys who can give the other players a day off.

Perfect fit for Twins
THERE ARE SO MANY TEAMS NAMED THAT IF MLBTR COMMENTERS WERE THEIR ASSOCIATED GMS DOUMIT WOULD BE A GREATER PRIZE THAN PUJOLS.
Ryan Doumit is a must for the Twins to pick up, considering the Twins Management isn’t planning on moving Mauer to 1B primarily any time soon. Mauer is productive when healthy, which is almost never. Butera seems to play more often than Mauer and has a batting average under .200. ENOUGH SAID
Yes, he could be a good fit on all 30 teams in some way. No team can carry three Catchers anymore, but years ago they used too. Even then one of them was a good hitter who played other positions. It is still a major assett to have a guy like that.
Ultimately, whoever signs Doumit is going to be disappointed in the end. The majority of his injuries haven’t come from catching. He just gets hurt a lot. The best chance he has to stay healthy is to be primarily a DH. Even then, he’ll probably trip on the steps coming out of the dugout or something.
Yeah, you’re probably right. But I believe Doumit is a perfect candidate for a “change-of scenery” scenario. Several insiders have said that no one on the Pirates took the constant losing as hard as Ryan. Perhaps he will be refreshed on a different (and winning) team. Good guy. Weird eyes.
doumit cannot play the outfield. if anyone says that he can, then youve never seen him play. he will not make a single hustle play and you will have somewhere in the realm of 3000 doubles a game against you.
would not mind the Brewers signing him. Backup catcher and maybe 1B
