Ryan Doumit Drawing Interest, Could Sign Soon

By Luke Adams 2 | November 12, 2011 at 3:50pm CDT

Ryan Doumit, who was already weighing multiple contract offers, received offers from two more teams today, tweets ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. Agent Paul Cobbe tells Crasnick that Doumit could sign within the next few days.

Matt Sosnick, another of Doumit's representatives at Sosnick Cobbe Sports, said earlier this month that his client was willing to catch, play the outfield, or DH. As Crasnick tweeted this week, there are teams that view Doumit as a combo player who could spend time at all three positions, making him more popular to AL clubs. However, Crasnick adds in another tweet that one of today's offers came from a National League team.

Doumit, 30, was limited to 236 plate appearances in 2011 due to injuries, but made the most of his playing time, hitting .303/.353/.477. Pittsburgh declined its option on the longtime Pirate at season's end.

Anaheim should sign him, but there’s probably too much of a logjam at DH for him to get starts there when he isn’t catching. Even though his D is bad, I’d still sign him as a catcher since his offense provides good value. I wish him the best, always a class guy in Pittsburgh and always a strong bat, but just couldn’t stay healthy.

I see him as a fit too, because he would fill a few needs.  However if multiple teams are  involved and that drives up his price a little… no thanks.

Exactly my line of thinking. He actually seems to profile better at RF than any other position, surprisingly.

I suspect he’ll be way to expensive for what the Tigers needs are, especially at catcher- I mean we already have 2 of the 3 American League AllStar catchers on the roster (yes, I know VMart isn’t much of a catcher but still…). I would rather they try to land Aaron Hill or Kelly Johnson to fill the hole at second. I also wish they hadn’t tendered Young but I would still consider offering an incentive laden contract for Grady Sizemore since I’m guessing Boesch will at least be platooning with Young if not playing full time in his place and that would fill the need for a leadoff hitter. David DeJesus would also be a possibility in that role as well. I think the Tigers should also take a chance on someone like Bedard or maybe Colon or even Chen with a 1 year deal at the back of the rotation because I’m not convinced we haven’t already seen the best Porcello has to offer.

I hope they stay out of the Reyes bidding because that will pretty much take all of the $$ they have to spend and it’s almost a sure bet he’ll miss some time with injuries

Perfect AL player, mostly a DH but can also serve as a backup C or 5th OF if necessary. Nice player to have when thinking interleague. He sure can hit, no problems there.

I think the Rays get him, because they are the most intelligently-run team in MLB and understand things that other teams don’t. I’d probably be a real fan if they weren’t based out of Florida. Its a shame they’re the Rays.

He’s a 1B/DH at best. I haven’t seen ANYTHING that believes he’s truly a catcher, but will stay there because his bat is good enough.

        • Backup_Slider

You’re confusing the heck out of me, because that’s what a lot of people say about Doumit. And that’s all the more reason why the Blue Jays are unlikely to sign him.

        • Phillies_Aces35

He’s probably going to be their DH in a season or two anyway once D’arnaud comes up.
Doesn’t make any sense to replace him with Doumit in the meantime though considering Doumit can’t even pretend to catch.

Mostly AL teams in on him.  So that list includes:

Angels, Mariners, Red Sox, Orioles and possibly the Tigers, though I don’t see it and the Twins.

Hard to say who he signs with, but given their need and money available, I’m thinking the Mariners land him.

As an Angels fan I’d love it if Scioscia got over Jeff Mathis’ defense, but that won’t happen and they already have a possible offensive backstop in Hank Conger, though he hit poorly last season.

@meanguygary:disqus  has the same idea as myself. Blue Jays have expressed interest before, and Arencibia/Doumit would be a pretty good offensive tandum (defense is kinda lacking).

DH and 1B are ways to keep his bat in the line-up, maybe even LF (RF? Really?).

I said that because the article said he was willing to play the outfield on top of catching and DH’ing. Plenty of poor-defensive catchers spend time spelling 1B, but not the outfield (Piazza, Posada, Victor Martinez, Napoli). If he’s willing to play the outfield, I don’t see why he wouldn’t play 1B, which many people find to be an easier position for catcher.

I’m not a Yank or Sox fan so geez, no need to be so pretentious about being a Pirates fan.

Ryan Doumit is a must for the Twins to pick up, considering the Twins Management isn’t planning on moving Mauer to 1B primarily any time soon. Mauer is productive when healthy, which is almost never. Butera seems to play more often than Mauer and has a batting average under .200. ENOUGH SAID

Yes,  he could be a good fit on all 30 teams in some way.  No team can carry three Catchers anymore, but years ago they used too.  Even then one of them was a good hitter who played other positions.  It is still a major assett to have a guy like that.

Ultimately, whoever signs Doumit is going to be disappointed in the end. The majority of his injuries haven’t come from catching. He just gets hurt a lot. The best chance he has to stay healthy is to be primarily a DH. Even then, he’ll probably trip on the steps coming out of the dugout or something.

Yeah, you’re probably right.  But I believe Doumit is a perfect candidate for a “change-of scenery” scenario.  Several insiders have said that no one on the Pirates took the constant losing as hard as Ryan.  Perhaps he will be refreshed on a different (and winning) team.  Good guy.  Weird eyes.
