NL Central Rumors: Astros, Reds, Saito, Bedard

By Luke Adams 2 | December 6, 2011 at 11:30pm CDT

Tuesday night updates out of the NL Central, as MLBTR's 24-hour coverage of the Winter Meetings continues….

  • Rival executives view Rockies assistant GM Bill Geivett as the favorite for the Astros' GM job, tweets Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.
  • Stephen Goff of the Houston Examiner hears (Twitter link) that the Astros may select a reliever with the first pick of Thursday's Rule 5 draft.
  • Reds GM Walt Jocketty talked about the team's search for pitching, and MLB.com's Mark Sheldon has the quotes. Jocketty also said Edgar Renteria's reps had contacted him, but the Reds probably aren't interested in signing him.
  • All signs are pointing to the Brewers bringing back Takashi Saito on a one-year deal, tweets Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
  • Erik Bedard is drawing interest from the Pirates, tweets Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

I’d love to see Bedard on the Pirates! A pitcher with upside, what a concept.

that leads me to believe that they won’t sign him.  they’ll grab someone who hasn’t been contacted by other teams (for good reason) and sign him to a one- or two-year deal.  but i’d like to see the sign Bedard.  if they do i’ll eat my words.

Bedard would be a good fit in Pittsburgh. It seemed like it was either the offense or the BP failing him during his starts with the Red Sox

For Mariner fans it would be a bitter pill to see Bedard have a big season for the Pirates.  But if he signs there I wish him well.

Great.. Was hoping Saito would head back to Boston and setup Bard as a possibility. Maybe the Saito to brewers is another rumor misdirect so far…

I remember that he 3 hit the White Sox a few yrs. back when he was with Baltimore. He would be a nice addition for the Pirates. And since I’m a White Sox fan, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Sox talk him. Buerhle will probably sign with another team. A healthy Bedard would be a good replacement for him.

He had a complete game shutout in 2007. That must have been the game I saw him pitch. He was lights out that night. i’m sure some team will pick him up. Is he healthy now? I know he’s had some injuries.

Bedard equals at least two trips to the DL.  He is the pitching equal to Ryan Doumit.
