Phillies Not Shopping Polanco, Backing Off Ramirez

By Luke Adams 2 | December 6, 2011 at 11:08pm CDT

The Phillies are no longer shopping Placido Polanco and are "backing off" their pursuit of Aramis Ramirez, a rival executive tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link).

This would seem to indicate optimism about re-signing Jimmy Rollins, as we heard earlier that the Phillies would be interested in trading Polanco and acquiring Ramirez if they were unable to bring back Rollins. However, Rosenthal says this decision is unrelated to the club's negotiations with their longtime shortstop.

The Angels and Brewers are among the teams still in on Ramirez, tweets Rosenthal.

I think the Phils should shop Polanco regardless of whether or not they sign Rollins

Polly is signed for next year only, he won’t be coming back in 2013.

I thought the whole purpose of the Phils offseason was to get offense, instead we are resigning the same crap we had. Yes Rollins is crap. He is lazy when he runs the bases, pops up every damn swing because he thinks he is a power hitter and he isn’t, and he never once tries to get on base more and create havoc like Reyes. The Phils should sign Aramis and get someone like a Furcal to fill the gap until Galvis.

Spot on Joe. But that also applies to 2B and 1B which have lead the decline.  Just look at the infield’s BA 2008 to 2011.  Down down down, just like RISP hopelessness in the playoffs.  So we have enough pitching to win the division and an offense bad enough to get kicked out in round one.

“Unrelated” means they thought they could get Aramis for 2 years, but he wants 4.

They need to get a young 3B after this year (Headley?). Polly is a great hitter, but he hasn’t been the same since he was hit by the pitch from Hudson…

I don’t understand, besides money, the rationale behind “we want to trade Polly if we don’t resign jimmy but we want to keep Polly if we do” so basically they don’t re sign Rollins their defense at SS takes a hit sooooo then they want to make the left side even worse by trading Polly to sign Aram? Why wouldn’t you trade Polly if you resign jimmy and then sign Aram? I know the money would be high but if you have awesome defense at SS it makes it a little easier to have an oaf at 3rd. Let’s not make the entire left side of the infield a black hole.

See what it would take to get Headley and Bartlett from SD. Bartlett has one year left at 5.5 or so.

Bartlett is trash. I’d take headley though. I’d really like headley a lot.
