Yankees Claim Matt Antonelli

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 17, 2012 at 2:56pm CDT

The Yankees have claimed infielder Matt Antonelli off of waivers from the Orioles, Marc Carig of the Star-Ledger tweets. Antonelli, who was designated for assignment four days ago, will report to Triple-A.

Antonelli, 27, signed a Major League deal with the Orioles this offseason. He posted a .204/.351/.280 battling line for Baltimore's top affiliate before the O's removed him from the 40-man roster over the weekend. The Padres selected Antonelli 17th overall in the 2006 draft.

Rapada wasn’t a castoff, he was a “we have no room”. Antonelli is a castoff. Bypassed for callup twice in favor of Tolleson and Hall, both of whom were not on the 40-man.

and why did they do this? they dont need fielders they need pitchers. or did cashman not get the memo? has he not been watching, or paying attention to the injuries to his pitchers? Losing pineda hurt bad, especially since garcia is stinking it up and kuroda is inconsistent, losing robertson hurt alot more, and losing mo hurt the most. and yet they sign another fielder? how about atleast kicking the tires on roy oswalt and see if he would like to go to new york? or even get into trade talks for guys like chris sale, Dempster, John Lannan (yeah he isnt that good but hell it beats getting another dang fielder when the need is pitching) maybe even try to get johan santana.

If you think that the White Sox are trading you Chris Sale, then you’re delusional.

Sounds like the typical Yankee fan thinking any player is available….

No, this sounds like the typical irrational fan of any team.

You are having a heart attack over a waivers claim?

They made the claim because Antonelli is a guy who showed something with the bat back in the California league 3-4 years ago.  He didn’t hit well his first couple times in AAA, but he was riding the shuttle and judging by the games played it looks like he may have been hurt.

He hit okay at AAA in 2011, and while he isn’t hitting much this year he’s walking a lot.  I don’t know what his defensive reputation is, but the guy is 27, doesn’t cost anything, and has a .372 career OBP in the minors.

      Why not?

Our backup infielder is Jayson Nix, so yeah, so utility infielder is a big need.

Are you new to baseball or something? Waiver claims happen all the time for these type players. They are stashed at AAA for depth. Last I checked none of the pitchers you mentioned were available off waivers. Additionally, yeah, Garcia stunk it up during his starts, but has been highly effective out of the pen lately. I think some deep breathing exercises would do you well.

Nice move Yankees getting Matt Antonelli. We need IF depth. He has decent MiL stats. He has speed. His glove needs work, albeit.
