Extension talks between Cole Hamels and the Phillies will accelerate this week, but the left-hander is “conflicted” about his next step, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported this morning. The Phillies will almost certainly trade Hamels if he doesn’t accept their extension offer, Rosenthal noted. Here are the latest rumors surrounding Hamels with eight days to go before the trade deadline…
- The Phillies are still "actively trying" to sign Hamels, writes Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com. One "plugged-in" source told Salisbury that he thinks an extension will be reached.
- The negotiations are reaching a “sensitive” stage, ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick reports. The Phillies, who have offered Hamels a six-year deal in the $127.5MM range, must save themselves a window to discuss trades in case they can’t agree to terms with Hamels on an extension.
- The Cardinals could be a suitor for Hamels if he reaches free agency, Crasnick writes. Hamels' wife is from Missouri.

trade and resign in offseason. get prospects and keep cole for the long haul.
Kev Ske
wouldn’t that be nice.
Phillies_Aces35
If he doesn’t sign their extension now, what makes you think he’ll accept it in the off season?
“Cliff Lee?” Different situation. The Phillies never got to the point with Cliff Lee in their original negotiations with him that they are with Cole now. Had the Phillies offered Cliff Lee 6 years prior to free agency, he’d have signed.
Justin 26
That would be good if the Cards get him.
Phillies_Aces35
I don’t understand why his family tree means so much. His family is largely from Boston… guess he’ll sign there.
If he leaves Philadelphia it’s either to pitch for a team with a better chance to win, or the most money possible. St. Louis isn’t going to blow Philly or LA out of the water.
rainyperez
You never know though because with Carpenter’s career likely over they will need a great one-two punch with Wainwright.
Phillies_Aces35
They do, but I’d be very surprised if they offered him Sabathia money.
cards2WS
Carp should be ready by ST. Why do you think his career is likely over?
Kev Ske
I’m willing to wager that St Louis will go balls out to sign him.
sam_lammert
id take that bet

The Cardinals are going to be looking to extend Waino soon. They will not invest that kind of money in a pitcher.
Oilcanoworms
I would be okay with that. Anybody need two former “aces”? Beckett and Lester, get’em cheap!!
Phillies_Aces35
I wouldn’t give up on Lester without getting blown away. I’m a big fan of him personally and would love him on my team.
Beckett on the other hand, not a big fan of the guy… at all.
payaso
Hope the dodgers sign him this offseason.
Otis26
Kansas City is also in Missouri – just sayin’. Only difference is KC wouldn’t pay his kind of money.
Adam
Neither will the Cardinals.
Justin 26
Yeah they would

When have the Cardinals been huge FA spenders? It isn’t going to happen. St. Louis is a mid market. The Cardinals have been going more and more with home grown talent. Their rotation in 2013 will probably consist of Waino, Lynn, Westbrook or Lohse(They will probably re-sign one), Two or the following(Garcia, Carpenter, Kelly, Miller, Rosenthal.)

Non-sources tell me that Hamels wife loves salons in LA. They also tell me Boston could be in play because Hamel’s family lives there. ALSO they tell me both Hamels and his wife love Disneyland so don’t rule out the Angels. FINALLY they love BBQ and big ranches so don’t rule out the Rangers.
rundmc1981
Hamels’ favorite cup is a mug from Seattle Starbucks — the Mariners have now entered the picture.
ejr
Hamels wife is from Missouri. and she doesn’t pitch. so it totally makes sense. whereas that mug gave Hamels the secret to his change up.

I can’t see Hamels resigning with Philly, they are an older team that has fallen off the deep end. If he gets traded he has another chance to play in the world series this year. He will also get more money in free agency, and be able to pick his team. Seems like a no brainer for him.
Matt
As a Braves fan, I hope the Phillies do sign Cole Hamels. I am always happy to see them make a huge signing and be locked into it for a long long time.
vtadave
Except this would be a signing that actually makes sense.
rangers1030
Cole hamels will sign extension with phillies
walrusgod
I doubt the Cards will be that big of a suitor. We rarely sign pure free agents to huge deals, and I don’t think we’re going to give up a bunch of prospects to acquire him this season and then have to sign him to over $20 million per year. If the Cards are buyers in the trade market, I think we go after someone a little less expensive, making sure we have the money to re-sign guys like Waino.
The guy I’m wondering if the Cards go after is Mark Buehrle. I really wanted the Cards to go after him this off-season, but A) we had to resolve the Pujols situation first and B) his contract with the Marlins is a little heftier than anticipated. Granted, I really, really doubt the Marlins will give up on Buehrle after a very good half-season, but they just spent a ton of money to be near the bottom of the NL East, so who knows what they’re going to do.

Rangers could possibly trade for Hamels with Mike Olt Ron Washington reported Profar is off limits but if the rangers cant get Hamels they’ll go after Greinke
Ausome7
Polanco, Hamels, Pence for the Lakeland Flyingtigers
baseball52
The Cards? Ok, either sign him to an extension, or trade him somewhere he will.
NatFan05
Would be nice to see Hamels leave the division sooner rather than later

Relevant: Colby Lewis is out for the year and Oswalt’s likely to go on the DL again. Looks like that’s where Cole Hamels is probably headed if he doesn’t sign. Would love to get a bidding war going between the Angels and Rangers if necessary.
CJ Wittmann
Texas said to give up a package of 3B Mike Olt, CF Leonys Martin, possibly RHP Neil Ramirez and maybe a low level organization guy that will never be a prospect. SS Jurickson Profar is off limits. Angels said to give up a package of CF Peter Bourjos, RHP Garrett Richards, possibly SS Jose Segura but probably not. Hamels is just about as good as gone in Philadelphia.
