Mets Designate Justin Hampson For Assignment

By Mike Axisa | July 4, 2012 at 11:11am CDT

The Mets have designated Justin Hampson for assignment, the team announced (on Twitter). The move clears a roster spot for Jordany Valdespin.

Hampson, 32, appeared in three games and faced eight batters for New York. The left-hander allowed three hits and a walk in his first big league action since 2008.

Not a smart move. Because Nieuwenhuis has a bruised hand, they bring up Valdespin as an added outfielder and left handed bat. But, the Phils are starting two lefties and have four lefties in the pen, so this is not that urgent an issue. Moreover, the Mets struggled when they had a short pen against the Yankees and had to hold back on pitching changes. Ronny Cedeno can play the outfield in an emergency.

I suspect Will Ohman will be signed very soon. Lefties are hitting .186/.250/.305/.555 against him this season.

A much better loogy than Hampson…

I figured that they were either planning to pick up a better lefty soon or call up Josh Edgin, who seems to be playing better for the Bisons, if they cannot. I just don’t like the “we can get through a day or two with a short pen” attitude, particularly with Chris Young on the hill today (who, of course is perfect through three as if to prove me wrong). When they decided to play short and got burned.

I agree.  This was silly.  The ‘pen has needed a second lefty all year.  We’re not in any kind of position to DFA this guy.  If the need had been more pressing it would have been understandable, but it wasn’t.  And with a short ‘pen today, we paid for it.  Short-sighted.

The Mets should have DFA’d Turner instead.

Why do you want to DFA the biggest clutch hitter from your bench? Bad idea.

because he is “only” batting .260 and poor defensively although he doesn’t realize a .260 hitting bench player is a good thing…
