Mets Sign Amed Rosario

By Zachary Links | July 2, 2012 at 10:47am CDT

The Mets have signed Dominican shortstop Amed Rosario for $1.75MM, according to Ben Badler of Baseball America.  The figure might mark the largest bonus given to a Dominican player during this signing period, Badler tweets.

Badler writes that Rosario might be the most divisive player in Latin America.  Those who like him say that he has strong fielding instincts, hands, and arm strength.  Other scouts fear that he is prone to strikeouts with his uppercut stroke.  The Astros and White Sox are in the former camp as they were also interested in the shortstop.

Looks like a nice signing. If he stays at SS or becomes a corner OF. High upside, low risk.

      1.75 M low risk?

60% of their allotment seems like a lot for a guy who has scouts split on his future potential.

Who knows though. Signing teenagers out of the Dominican is more of a crapshoot than the draft. In five years, Rosario could be a complete bust and never make it past A-ball, or he could be an All Star shortstop. Or literally anything in between.

Can’t wait until he reaches prime, becomes the most gifted SS defensively, and wins a batting title so we can let him walk without receiving just compensation.

I’m reading the description of just another good-field-no-hit shortstop.  Strikeouts or no, can he hit?  Is he a base-stealing threat?  No one expects the Mets, or anyone else, to find another Jose Reyes, but one would like as complete a player as possible.   Cal Ripken, jr, and Derek Jeter made it plain years ago that teams can no  longer afford defense-only shortstops.  Rosario can be as “divisive” as he likes, as long as he has the skills to put his bat on the ball.

I’m keeping some faith in the fact that the Mets have very good people in their scouting department…

I’m a little confused on the new rule in the CBA, can they not go over $2.75 million for 1 player or what’s the exact rule?
