Nationals Release Rick Ankiel

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 27, 2012 at 3:27pm CDT

The Nationals have released outfielder Rick Ankiel, the team announced. Washington designated the outfielder for assignment last week.

Ankiel, 33, signed a one-year, $1.25MM contract with Washington this past offseason. He appeared in 68 games as the Nationals' center fielder and posted a .228/.282/.411 batting line with five home runs in 171 plate appearances. The Yankees had some interest in Ankiel before acquiring Ichiro Suzuki.

I assume he can as he was a pitcher before he became an outfielder.

Rangers will get Grienke…Nats have nothing worth offering.

Nats wouldn’t trade for a rental player like Grienke unless he was coming cheap which he won’t. Rangers can have him.

Good call, Ankiel is superior outfielder and a power hitter/clutch.

Ankiel’s highest OPS over the last 5 years (including this year) is a underwhelming .709 back in 2010 OUCH.

Reds GM Walt Jocketty “feels a need to do something”.

    And there it is……

An aging player with diminishing stats, that bats Left Handed and who is a former Cardinal that the team can pick up off the trash heap for cheap.

There is no reason the Mariners should not take a chance.

Guy’s still got an electric arm. Sign him to a minor league deal and try to work him into the bullpen. If it doesn’t work out, you could always release him.

Braves should pick him up again. He’s a solid backup.

If I were The Giants I would take a shot on Rick Ankiel. he is a lefthanded power hitter and can play center-field. He is a guy worth looking into.
