Diamondbacks Extend Josh Collmenter

By Jeff Todd | January 15, 2014 at 6:48pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have avoided arbitration and reached an extension with righty Josh Collmenter, reports Ken Rosentha of FOX Sports (Twitter links). The club has also officially announced the extension via press release.

Collmenter will receive a $2.425MM guarantee. The deal also includes a club option and a mutual option, according to Rosenthal, and could reach $6.5MM in value if both options were to be exercised.

Collmenter, soon to be 28 years of age, is represented by The Sparta Group. He began his time in Arizona as a starter, throwing 154 1/3 innings of 3.38 ERA ball back in 2011. But Collmenter struggled to a 5.11 ERA in eleven starts in the 2012 season, leading to a switch to the pen. He has been solid in his new relief role, and last year racked up 8.3 K/9 against 3.2 BB/9 in 92 innings, supporting a 3.13 ERA.

Josh was outstanding in all the extra inning games last year. He really did find his calling as a long man out of the pen.
    Good deal for both sides.

When he comes into the game I have a really confident feeling. He is one of those unsung players that a team needs to be a true contender. Sort of like having a Counsell type coming out of the bullpen

This guy is great. The D-backs had an event tonight and you can really see how important he is to the organization both as a player and as a personality. Great deal for both sides

Only 1 year? Would have liked to see us sign this guy for like 3-5 years. He players wherever he is told and has success whenever he goes. Players like him are hard to find, especially now days. How many MLB teams can say they can throw out a long reliever of collmenter talent 3 times a week and have the guy nit complain for a second that his arm is tired. Easily one of my favorite players on the team.
