Blue Jays Focused On Pitching Upgrades

By Steve Adams | July 31, 2014 at 8:30am CDT

The Blue Jays aren’t pursuing any bats at this time, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post (Twitter link). Instead, the team is focused entirely on adding to its pitching staff.

Sherman doesn’t specify whether the club is looking at starters or relievers, but it stands to reason that the Blue Jays will look to both markets. Toronto’s offense will likely improve with the upcoming returns of Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind, but they’ve long been connected to upgrades in the rotation and in the bullpen. However, some reports have said that they won’t be able to add much in the way of payroll.

The Blue Jays acting like they can’t afford to add payroll is almost as ridiculous as the Red Sox acting like a small market team. Rogers Communications is a media giant. It’s like if Comcast owned a team.

Rogers is very wealthy, but that does not mean they are willing to go all in with the BlueJays. They could easily have told Alex, “Last year was a disaster. Work with what you have”
Its unfortunate. If there ever was a time to take on some additional salary, its for this year and maybe next.

Agreed. They made the big trade last year and missed the playoffs. This year they’ve got a shot and they’re gonna start pinching pennies?

They’ll add salary but they don’t want to be a joke like the Yankees, having horrible ARod contracts and such.

    Hamels for Stroman, Sanchez, _____?

Ahahaha no. I know the Phillies aren’t looking to dump salary but that Hamels contract definitely warrants only one top prospect because it will otherwise handicap most teams in a number of ways. Unless the Phillies want to eat half that contract, then I’d consider both guys but would still say no because of the number of years of team and cost controlled years. They are so valuable in todays inflated FA market.

I would trade Norris and a low A guy or two for Hamels and some cash.

Stroman has been pitching lights out and I thought AA said Sanchez was untouchable. I’d stick with what they had. Once they get Lind, Edwin, & Lawrie back, all of which I think should be back by mid-late August (September at the latest) that will basically be like a trade for 3 big bats, and the pitching the last couple weeks outside of that 1 game disaster vs. Boston has been pretty good.

More like AJ Jimenez + Sean Nolin.

      Can’t tell if joking.

Stroman is arguably one of the best pitchers in baseball right now, and is going nowhere.

Didn’t mean to offend all of you jays fans, but if the jays are going all in I don’t think it’s ridiculous to consider a trade for Cole Hamels that includes top tier prospects, especially considering 30 year old left handed aces not locked up to a ridiculous contract with a World Series MVP don’t grow on trees.

Stroman and Sanchez aren’t really prospects anymore, they are helping out the current team win games.

And Stroman is arguably better than Hamels right now. Stroman has an ERA of just over 2.00 in his first 10 MLB starts. Dude is a beast and is going nowhere.

Come on now, don’t get carried away. Stroman is having a great start to his career but please don’t say he is better then Hamels after 10 starts. That’s just absurd. There’s no Denying the young talent on those Jays though, you’ve got plenty to be excited about

Stroman isn’t better but he IS contributing. So its not adding Hamels for a prospect – it’s subtracting Stro and then adding Hamels. Having said that, Jeff Kent for David Cone was similar and it produced a World Series victory.

I never said Stroman is better than Hamels, I said he is better than him right now – something that is very difficult to argue with. What the future holds is a different story.

Jays should just trade Rasmus, Happ, and a some prospects like Nolin and Graveman for Utley and Hamels, if they can get them through waivers. Maybe throw in Drabek just for old times sake. But keep Stroman, Sanchez and Norris, please.
