Rays May Be Engineering Three-Team David Price Trade

By Jeff Todd | July 31, 2014 at 2:41pm CDT

2:42pm: A three-team deal involving Price could well be in the works, with Price being the only piece moving from Tampa, tweets Topkin.

2:36pm: Lefty Enny Romero is under consideration in Tampa’s discussions, tweets Rosenthal, though precisely in what manner still unclear.

2:31pm: A three-team mix could be in the offing, according to reports. Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets that there were discussions of such a deal involving Price and the Tigers and Mariners. And Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times tweets that a three-team arrangement is under discussion now.

2:14pm: The Tigers appear to be the front-runner on Price at the moment, tweets Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News.

2:13pm: The Yankees are unlikely to get Price, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

2:04pm: The Yankees are also involved in discussions, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter).

1:33pm: The Cardinals may also still be involved on Price, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (via Twitter). His source indicates that the Cards, along with the Tigers and Mariners, are the final possible suitors.

1:28pm: The Rays are nearing a deal involving Price, tweets ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark. Where, however, remains unclear.

1:14pm: Drew Smyly would likely need to be part of a package to land Price, tweets Morosi.

1:11pm: The Dodgers are “not back in” on Price, tweets Peter Gammons of GammonsDaily.com.

1:02pm: The Pirates have also been discussing Price, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports on Twitter. In discussions with the Dodgers, prospect Joc Pederson is in play, adds Rosenthal.

12:52pm: The Tigers have discussed Price with the Rays today, reports Jon Morosi of FOX Sports (Twitter links).

12:47pm: The Dodgers and Mariners are the leading contenders to acquire Price, if he is dealt, tweets Jim Bowden of ESPN.com.

12:45pm: The Rays are “definitely moving” ace David Price, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

While Price has long been a subject of trade speculation, it seemed less and less likely he would be moved as Tampa reeled off an extensive winning streak. But in spite of the club’s solid play, it remains largely on the fringes of contention at this point.

Nelson, Taylor, Arcia, Coulter are all legit prospects

And Jimmy Nelson could possibly let them still contend this year. Milwaukee has been quiet all day, maybe this is what they are focusing on…you never know. Unless you are in the war room of course.

Still a guy like Nelson could be really attractive over other center pieces. A lot depends on what the Rays want. I’m sure Lackey and Lester both could have netted big time prospects…yet the Red Sox went with MLB players.

I’d rather have Joc Pederson, Urias, or Seager from the Dodgers
              or
Josh Bell or Glasnow from the Pirates
              or
              Taijuan Walker from the M’s
as a centerpiece before I pick Nelson as a centerpiece.
Nelson is a fantastic prospect, but he is still not Top 20 quality

I’d actually argue that the Rays would be the only team in the majors who would recognize value in the Crew’s farm system where others didn’t/wouldn’t.
They obviously don’t have a top 10 system but there are some serious potential MLB difference makers. Just look at Davis, Gennett, Peralta, and Nelson the past few years. None of them broke the Top 100 list (until Nelson last year) and they’re all playing solid baseball. That being said, I really don’t see Price ending up in Milwaukee.

not any more. I mean you did read the news already today right?

If the Cards are doing anything, it better be for a real #4 HR guy. Otherwise it’s gonna be just wishing and hoping that Tavares is ready to step up now that he’s the (hopefully) full time RF.

I mean when your SS is your HR leader, something is wrong with the offense.

Despite their reputation for not hanging onto players, the Marlins almost never trade players midseason that are having good years. Anibal Sanchez is about the only exception. Hanley Ramirez, for example, was having a career worst year when he was traded.

I think realistically whether it’s today or in the offseason, a deal of Cespedes, Craig, Kelly, and a few prospects would make the Marlins heavily consider dealing Stanton.

I wouldn’t really call what they have a “fan base.”

they’re not making the mistake Atlanta made last year. We should have traded McCann mid-season, at least we would have gotten more for him than we did.

They have plenty of pitching, he’s gone anyways. If the return is right, so be it.

Not like they’ve traded him, officially, yet.

We could win the division as we’re constructed now. Liriano and Cole could lead this team to a division title. The moves Stl made don’t scare me, and Milwaukee is slowly falling back. If Marte returns strong from injury or, God forbid, Pedro Alvarez gets his head out of his rear end, then I really like our chances.

When it comes to Price, really nobody except major league guys should be untouchable. So Polanco/Cole are probably out cause they are part of our team now.
Glasnow is super elite prospect. I’ve heard people say his upside is better than Taillon or even Cole (#1 overall pick). He’d be the centerpiece. Add Bell or Meadows for another elite prospect. Maybe a catcher like Tony Sanchez, who should be in the majors but is blocked by Martin. Pirates farm system is literally 10-12 names deep, all B+ level talents or better, so the combinations are nearly endless.

If the Pirates can’t afford a one year $20 million deal, they should get out of the game. I can understand them not being able to cover 3-4 year contracts for that money but one year? Especially with Liriano and Volquez coming off the books and all that increased attendance and TV money they didn’t spend…if money is an issue, that really speaks poorly of the team’s ownership.

They should be able to afford him. Volquez ($5MM), Liriano ($6MM), Wandy ($7.5MM), Barmes ($2MM) are all coming off the books. That’s $20.5MM right there. Martin ($8.5MM) is scheduled to come off the books too, but let’s hope not. That on top of the TV money, Pirates can get a deal done.

What do people think about this trade: It wouldn’t be a huge splash, but I think down the road it would help the dodgers and mariners significantly.. mariners should trade John Paxton and Taijuan Walker for Joc Peterson and Corey Seager.. The Dodgers do not need Walker since they already have Urias. There is no way the Dodgers trade Seager and Pederson unless they are getting David Price and I still think they wouldn’t do that trade. They can afford to give away Pederson and Urias given their depth at both positions but Seager is their future 3B once Uribe’s contract expires after next year

First off, their names are James Paxton and Joc Pederson.

Second, all 4 of the guys you mentioned are indeed legitimate prospects.. but I fail to see how it would necessarily help both teams long term. And then you backtrack and offer the same deal but without Paxton, as if he’s negligible?

Pederson AND Seager for Walker just makes no sense whatsoever for the Dodgers. The risk involved with young pitchers is far too great to trade a sure-thing prospect like Pederson, who projects to be a 30-30 type player in a few years, AND a potential superstar middle infielder like Seager for a guy who’s already dealt with shoulder issues just this year.

One thing that would be cool about your crazy hypothetical trade would be the chance that brothers, Kyle and Corey Seager, could play on the same Major League team.

These kind of “challenge” trades rarely happen. Too risky; and the scouts, and gm, that put their weight behind drafting these players are still around to make the case for not trading their babies. I like the idea though, Seattle needs bats and everyone else in the league needs more pitching. But, LA will need a SS after this trade.

Prospect wise, I think the Pirates being “all in” means any name is on
the table. Price has the contract and ability that you’re willing to
trade anybody for. I’m glad Huntington recognizes that and didn’t waste
his assets on a rental like Lester or middle rotation guy like Kennedy/Lackey or *ugh* a reliever. This is why you build a farm system – for these moments when a truly elite talent comes on the market and you can bid on him without totally wrecking your current team or the future.

The salary isn’t why the Rays are trading him. They are trading him because he has one year left and they know they can’t offer him 4-6 year extension so they’d rather get prospects now than lose him and get nothing. Same as they did with Shields, Kazmir and Garza.
And Pittsburgh should have a bigger payroll tbh. We draw twice as many fans as they do and I’m pretty sure our tv deal is better.

I am not one to bemoan fans but this is really not that hard. Trading is a gamble. You are betting that what you trade will of the same value or less value than what you are trading for. The other team is hoping for the opposite. Prospects are wonderful if they work out. If they do not, they are role players at best. The most recent trade to consider as a hallmark is that of Shields/Davis for Myers/Oderizzi. Everyone “knew” that Myers would hit. He did and then struggled as per the baseball learning curve. He will be back most likely. However, right now, the Royals look like they have a better chance at the playoffs than the Rays. So, who won? You give to get. Every team overvalues their prospects. There are true studs out there. But to suggest that just because a kid looks great while killing minor league pitching, he will walk into the majors and blow up, is silly. I guess my point is before we go all reactionary one way or the other, we need to realize that the ultimate goal is a ring. Period.

a ring is the goal but doesnt hurt to keep prospects, look what happen last time dodgers use the farm . dodgers made martin decent catcher, kershaw future hall famer, loney once big time player and matt kemp. plus great 2nd/3rd pitcher in bill before the injures

Don’t know how the Tigers could possibly have enough to entice the Rays, unless Tampa REALLY believes JD Martinez’ breakout is legitimate. Maybe JD Martinez, Jose Iglesias, Drew Smyly for Price and Zobrist. Not a bad gamble for 4 years of control for a potential OF slugger. Zobrist is a great fit for the Tigers as he can play both SS and LF, splitting time for Suarez and Rajai Davis. Tigers also need another Switch Hitter/Lefty Bat and he would not be not just a rental. Price replaces Scherzer next season and extends the window for another year. If they can’t get it done by next year, let all the free agents walk with QOs (Porcello, Zobrist, Price) and start the rebuild. Again, Tampa will have to REALLY like Martinez for this to be possible.

While the Tigers have more pitching than hitting prospects, the Rays are still loaded with pitching. It’s their offense that has struggled to create Runs, which is why I think 4 years of Martinez may appeal to them. ONLY if they believe in him. With the trades of Craig and Cespedes, this is setting a trend that teams aren’t getting 6 years of hitters, but teams are willing to part with 2-4 years of control of a proven one.

For the Tigers to get it done the trade will start with Smyly, Robbie Ray, and a PTBNL (Jose Iglesias after he comes off the DL)… The Rays would have to throw in Zobrist if they wanted to talk about Nick.

It doesn’t seem likely either team will find a medium ground on the deal unless the Rays really love some of the Tigers farm hands.

As I said in my edit, Rays need hitting prospects, not pitching. They have Matt Moore coming back and are great at developing arms. The offense has sputtered though. With the trades of Craig and Cespedes, selling teams are apparently coveting hitters with a couple years of team control and MLB experience and potential for more. JD Martinez at 26 and 4 years of team control fits that bill. DD made the mistake a few years back of believing in Brennan Boesch breakout and turned down trade offers for star players because of it. I doubt he wants to make that mistake again.

I would do this in a heartbeat if I was the Pirates. Not sure it would be enough for the Ray though. Not to mention I wouldn’t want Zobrist if I was the Pirates. He would have no where to play. The outfield is set, Walker is entrenched at 2B, Mercer has been awesome at SS since June. Harrison/Pedro at 3B. Can Zobrist play 1B? I’d much rather replace Heredia and Holmes for Josh Bell and get Price/McGee.

Lifetime Pirates fan here. I would LOVE to see David Price in a Buccos uniform. Frankie Liriano is back to his 2013 form now, Cole is close to returning, Volquez has been solid. Add Price as your #1 and a rotation of Price/Liriano/Cole/Volquez with Locke/Vanimal/Morton vying for the 5th spot would be amazing. It’s almost TOO MUCH starting pitching, but Worley has an option left, Morton has been sketchy, and Locke is still a question mark. The Pirates need that true-blue #1 starter to match up against the Wainwrights, Kershaws, etc.

Josh Bell will be a top-notch power-hitting, switch-hitting first baseman. He is the real deal. Tampa will obviously want him, they will want one of Kingham or Glasnow, and they will want another top prospect. I can’t imagine them trading Price without getting 3 top 100 prospects and an additional MLB-ready player (Tabata). Perhaps the Rays also send a reliever and the Bucs kill two birds. As a Pirates fan, I am ready to do this. The window for a small market team is precariously slim, no matter how great the farm system is. The NL Central is winnable. The NL Pennant is winnable. 2014 is the year to do it, Neal.

OK, Tampa trade David Price and a RP to Pittsburgh.

The Pirates offer a combination of these players:

    OF Josh Bell

SS Alen Hanson, OF Harold Ramirez

SP Tyler Glasnow, SP Nick Kingham, SP Jameson Taillon

P Clay Holmes, P Adrian Sampson

    OF Jose Tabata

The Rays can have Josh Bell, Hanson or Ramirez, Jose Tabata, and one each of Glasnow/KIngham/Taillon and Holmes/Sampson.

Does this get it done, and what is the final package to Tampa?

I would think Bell, Hanson, Glasnow, Sampson, and Tabata would be enough to get Price and a choice of bullpen piece. I would imagine the Rays would want Glasnow over Taillon due to the injury. Kingham is closer to the majors than both other guys, but Glasnow is probably the most immediate impact arm of the group. I know this is a lot to give back for the Pirates, but I don’t expect Tampa to move Price for anything less than this type of package.

Yeah that’s basically what I’ve been envisioning. Bell for sure plus one of their elite pitchers (probably Glasnow although Taillon and Kingham are more major league ready) plus a good secondary pitching prospect (Sampson seems to be a hot name, Heredia is also a name to watch) plus one of our OFers (Ramirez/Jones/Barnes). I think its Bell or Meadows to be honest, one but not both. Also, not sure the Rays catching situation but the Pirates have a couple good ones (Tony Sanchez, McGuire down in A ball) they could throw in.
If the Rays toss in an extra piece, I’d like to see it be a reliever, preferably Boxberger.

I’d be inclined to ask for Boxberger as well. He would fit in as a solid right-handed reliever. The reason I didn’t expect the Pirates to chase down Andrew Miller is because he is left-handed, and Watson/Wilson are set in as the 1-2 punch as lefties from the bullpen.

Yeah I never understood why the rumors were so hot for the Pirates looking to get Bastardo or Miller (lefties.). They need a 7th inning shutdown guy. Watson pitches the 8th. It makes no sense to have a lefty shutdown guy in the 7th and then another follow him in the 8th. You’d want a righty so you go Right-Left-Right 7-9, right?

Rays wouldn’t trade Boxberger with how well he’s doing for the team right now. They’d probably be inclined to the throw in someone like Gomes.

I would be really surprised to see the Pirates do that. They’ve positioned themselves well for sustained success. A trade like that gives them a 2 year window.

I don’t understand why Pirates fans are hot after Zobrist. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Zorilla but he seems kinda extraneous unless your 110% committed to moving either Marte, Walker, or Alvarez. I know he plays SS but that’s not really his best position. Besides, for the prospects we’d have to add to get Zobrist, I’d rather just take my chances with Marte or Mercer.

Mariners can use Price & Zobrist. If Price goes to the Cardinals, wonder if Shelby Mikler, Zobrist, and John Jay/Peter Bourjos (coming off the bench) would make a good three team trade.

I don’t believe Alvarez is on the block in any deal. I love Josh Harrison, but he is not an everyday third baseman. The Pirates depth of outfielders in the farm system is more than enough to offset the trade of Marte, but I’m not sure Marte’s trade value is very high right now.

I don’t see why Tampa would want Pedro anyway. He should be a 1B but he isn’t and who knows if he can be converted? I guess they could use him as a DH but still… I dunno, I wouldn’t mind trading Pedro because I don’t think he’ll ever be the player his rabid Bucco fans wish he was but I just don’t see this being the deal to trade him in.

I’m not ready to give up on El Torro yet. I’ve seen too many players struggle as Pirates at this point in their careers (Aramis Ramirez, Jose Bautista, Brandon Moss) and then blossom once they move on to another franchise. Granted, A-Ram was fantastic in 2001 and then struggled in 2002 before being dealt to Chicago. Bautista was one of the worst starting ML position players in 2007, was dealt in 2008 in basically a roster-clearing move, and then turned into Babe Ruth in Toronto as he turned 30. Brandon Moss was also terrible in Pittsburgh, and now at 30 he is a premier power-hitter. Alvarez is 27 and signed through 2017. His throwing issue scares me but I think giving up on his bat one season removed from leading the NL in homeruns would be a grave mistake.

Why are people still speculating Taveras could be traded?
    1. Mozeliak literally laughed last night about the rumors Taveras was in trade talks.
2 . They just traded Craig to make room for Taveras to play every day.

If a Price deal requires Taveras, the Cardinals are obviously not involved.

Although I think it is crazy people are still speculating he would be involved (because of Mozeliak’s comments) why do Cardinals fans think its laughable for the Rays to ask for Taveras? Price is an ace, and not just a rental at this point since he is under contract for a whole nother season. If people think the Rays are going to settle on a package without including a number 1 or 2 out of the top 3 prospects out of a clubs system, they need to check their noggin.
