Athletics Claim Alex Hassan From Red Sox

By Steve Adams | November 17, 2014 at 4:54pm CDT

The A’s announced that they have claimed outfielder/first baseman Alex Hassan off waivers from the Red Sox (Twitter link).

Hassan, 26, made his big league debut with the Red Sox this year, collecting nine plate appearances and picking up his first big league hit — a single. The former 20th-round draft pick had a solid season at Triple-A Pawtucket, batting .287/.378/.426 with eight home runs this season. Those numbers line up well with the .282/.387/.411 batting line that Hassan has compiled over the course of parts of four seasons at that level.

No surprise. He gets on base.

I really liked him a few years ago, but now it just seems like he missed his window to contribute for the Red Sox. :(

Stanton signs $325mil deal. …meanwhile in a galaxy far far away, Oakland claims Alex Hassan.

Red Sox minor leaguer in his mid/late twenties with good OBPs in the past. Very Billy Beane-ish.

Theo couldn’t even say no through all his laughter. He’d have to just hang up.

Well there’s one for Cubs and one for A’s so…its actually an even deal?

Sonny Gray is a top 15 SP, Flash. Don’t be disrespectful.

That’s a tough one. I’d say the Cubs hang up first, as they can get a FA pitcher who is of similar quality, albeit at a high salary, while still keeping two great prospects. Interesting for the A’s though. They’d get some prospects to replenish the farm, possibly allowing them to be competitive in a few years, as their future post 2015 looks shaky.

Sonny Gray is a low cost #1 starter. He is the A’s best starter. He would easily be the cubs # 1 starter. If you could get a couple of prospects for 2 years of Shark than Gray would get lots more since he has 4 years left. The cubs on the other hand wouldn’t trade Soler in a deal because they plan to contend. Neither GM would do that trade. The A’s still have enough to contend next year and the cubs are for once building a real team.

Outside of 2012, he also destroys LHP’s, which seems to be something Billy looks for on the waiver wire

Good for him he will have a good chance to play rather than being buried in the Sox farm system.

Good pick up. We need a left fielder. Should at least be an option.

This kind of move happens all the time for every team. The free agent signing period opened up just a half a month ago, there’s still a LOT of time left to make moves.

The A’s were kind of middle of the road at getting on base last year.

Only because their offense went through a huge collapse in the 2nd half. They were among the leaders in many offensive categories at the All-Star break.

Sad that the Red Sox couldn’t something for him but such is life. Glad he’s going to place where he’ll likely get some work in the Major Leagues.

27 years old at start of next season, 30th ranked prospect in the their system. Can’t use up a 40-man roster spot for him. No loss for the Red Sox, maybe he can find some big league time in Oakland.
