Padres Notes: Pitching, Kim, Quentin

By Mark Polishuk | November 12, 2014 at 1:51pm CDT

Here’s the latest from San Diego…

  • The Padres are listening to trade offers for Ian Kennedy, Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports (Twitter links).  The team would look for hitting in return, though you’d suspect the asking prices would vary given the levels of team control — Kennedy is a free agent after the 2015 season, Cashner after 2016 and Ross after 2017.  Rosenthal speculates that the Braves, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Indians, Rangers and Royals could fit as possible trade partners for San Diego.
  • If the Padres are dealing some of their starters, then the addition of Kwang-Hyun Kim is a way to add depth, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes.  The Padres posted the high bid for Kim’s services and have just under a month to negotiate a contract with the Korean left-hander.
  • Carlos Quentin is open to waiving his no-trade clause to be dealt to an AL team, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports (Twitter link).  Quentin has a long history of knee injuries and playing in the American League would allow him to get some rest in a DH role.

Cron + for Ross? Padres in need of a bat and the Angels needing young pitching.

Why would the Padres make that deal? They turned down Cron + two prospects they eventually got in the Street deal for Kennedy at the trading deadline last year.

What’s your source? I remember reading specifically that Dipoto was not offering anyone on the big league roster, which Cron was a part of.

That’s no where near enough to land Ross. He’s a controllable All Star (FA in 2018) with one of the best sliders in the game. 2.81 ERA, average a K/IP. Cron was exposed in the second half: .205/.247/.342. Plus he can barely field his position.

Agreed. Ross is way to valuable to even be considered for Cron.

I think SD is willing to sacrifice fielding for power though, so I like to think Cron for Kennedy conversations will be starting up.

Guess he said Cron+, but not sure what value the “+” would have considering the state of the Angels’ farm system.

That’s the thing, I don’t think anyone in the farm (that wasn’t drafted in 2014) is enough of a “+” to get that deal going. Quantity doesn’t really add up to quality either.

The Angels depleted the farm to knab street. 4 of their better trqde chips were given up for Street in Lindsey Alvarez and Rondon. Idk what morris was worth but who knows

Cron+ is an upgraded CJ Cron. Like the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6+. CJ Cron+ would be obnoxiously bigger, cost more, and have a slightly better camera.

Castro is one of the better hitting shortstops with 3 All Star appearances to prove it. Everth lone appearance is tainted by PEDs.

If they’re trading for cub SS while giving up Cashner and Prospects it better be Russell or Alcantara. I think that’s how you spell it. Why would the Padres trade for an expensive shortstop AND give up cost controlled assests? Now if they trade you kennedy and take his entire contract and toss in a few medium prospects not in Top 15 sure or the Cubs eat money on castros deal ok maybe Cashner and good upside prospect not in top 10

Wouldn’t really benefit the Braves. Swapping one year players doesn’t make any sense. If/when Heyward is dealt it is much more likely to be with the future in mind. Though that deal wouldn’t even make sense in a win now situation either.

Probably makes more sense to keep Heyward, try and deal him at the deadline if the Braves are out of it, and then take the draft pick once he walks.

More than likely. They might take a deal earlier if it wows them and/or if they believe that the player(s) they’re targeting could end up traded to another party. I don’t expect they’ll kneejerk trade Heyward.

What would it take for Texas to get their hands on Kennedy and Grandal? I’d think it wouldn’t be crazy expensive. Then you could add Liriano for a relatively cheap deal and then drop a ton of cash on a big 4 year deal (options included) to bring the Cruz Missile back to town. Whatever’s left can be used to grab some lefty relievers. All offseason holes filled in four easy steps for JD.
