NL East Notes: Braves, Peraza, Gee

By Zachary Links | April 17, 2015 at 10:04pm CDT

Bartolo Colon did it all to help lead the Mets past the Marlins for their sixth straight win, Howie Rumberg of The Associated Press writes. Colon not only pitched the Mets past Miami, he hit a tying sac fly for his second RBI in two starts. Here’s more from the NL East..

  • Braves assistant GM John Coppolella made it clear that he has no interest in moving top prospect Jose Peraza, despite the Yankees’ apparent interest, Mark Bowman of MLB.com writes.  “We have no interest whatsoever in trading Jose Peraza,” Coppolella said. “Teams scout top prospects all the time, as we do other team’s top prospects. It was just a case where one of their scouts was sent to watch one of our guys.”  The soon-to-be 21-year-old has steadily climbed through Atlanta’s farm system and broke out with a .339/.364/.441 performance over 499 combined minor league plate appearances in 2014.
  • The Mets are still eager to trade Dillon Gee, and they view Rafael Montero as likely to take Gee’s spot, according to major league sources that spoke with Andy Martino of the New York Daily News.  Gee could be moved at anytime if a need arises elsewhere.  If they can’t move him, Montero will take his spot in the rotation, barring injury or regression. According to sources, there is no debate that Montero will get the first opportunity, before prospects Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz.
  • Luis Garcia, who was out of baseball three years ago, has become one of the steadiest arms in the Phillies bullpen, writes Matt Breen of the Philadelphia Inquirer.  The 28-year-old has allowed two hits and two walks in his five innings this season.

Showcasing Gee seems to be a bad way to go, better off hiding him

They’re gonna have to either take some salary back or eat half his pay. Just no market for a mediocre, out of options starter making $5m+.

it’s amazing to me how he was built up as a pretty big trade piece in the offseason by writers

That is the going rate for second rate starters in FA.

A 4A OF/ roster filler and a distant prospect should be attainable

In other words, they have no interest in trading him to the Yankees. Why would anyone trade with them is beyond me.

Why such an aversion to trading with a particular team? Kind of odd.

Because they have nothing worthy to give!

“Nothing worthy to give” It’s not like we’re talking Jordan Zimmerman, it’s Dillon Gee we’re talking. Regardless, they actually do have pieces other teams would want, should they consider shopping them/find an area of need.

Haha, I’m talking about Peraza trade to the Yankees!

Oh, misunderstood there, my apologies man. Still, they have the pieces to make a fair deal should ATL bite. Judge for Peraza would be a “fair” deal, but both sides would probably balk at it.

I was just about to say that. BA has Peraza at 54th on the top 100 list, while Judge comes in at 53. Fits both team’s needs.

I’d make that trade in a heartbeat if I were Hart. Judge would immediately become the best hitter in the Braves system. I have high hopes for Peraza, but the Braves have no power in their farm. And I think Peterson will hold his own at 2B.

                No way it happens though.

I think there are two things that would make this deal tough for the Yankees. For one, they see the raw potential in Judge and his readiness timetable matches up rather well with Beltran’s contract. Secondly, they still have Refsnyder in the system, whose offense has been very impressive but his adjustment to second hasn’t been seamless(although they could theoretically shift him back to the outfield), which probably brought on all of this talk in the first place

Just wait Ozhaino Albies. They could trade Peraza not lose a beat.

So true. No power comes to mind other than Tanner Murphy and he’s a couple years out and a catcher.. Sure it will be a focus of the draft in June.

Syndergaard is still only 22, yet it feels like we’ve been waiting an age for his promotion. Shows how far advanced the kid is.

Seems like there would be better match for trades than the Yankees for peraza.
