Blue Jays, Rangers Talks On Gallardo Not Progressing

By Jeff Todd | July 30, 2015 at 10:18am CDT

10:19am: Sullivan now says that nothing has come of recent chatter (on Twitter). Gallardo is more of a “fallback” for the Jays, tweets Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.

10:18am: The Blue Jays are interested in Rangers starter Yovani Gallardo, MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan tweets. He notes that there is a real possibility of a deal coming together.

As it shops the veteran righty, Texas is hopeful of finding a right-handed bat, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram adds (Twitter links). Notably, per Wilson, Gallardo would be willing to waive his no-trade protection to facilitate a deal to Toronto.

Gallardo is set to start tonight for the Rangers, so there could be some impetus towards getting something done in the near term. After adding Cole Hamels yesterday, Texas may be looking to recoup some value. But Wilson does note that the Rangers could hold on to the right-hander, with the idea of possibly making a late-season playoff run and getting value back from him through the qualifying offer system.

I’m not sure which bat Toronto could offer to Texas, seems like a third team would be required

I’m too afraid he’d accept the QO

      you think he’s not worth a 1yr $15M contract?

Rumor has it that the QO is going to be closer to $17 million this year.. If he accepts that would be a huge chunk of what they could spend this off season without a clear need for him.. As it stand the Rangers will have a rotation of Darvish, Hamels, and Holland as the front 3.. $17 million for a #4 seems excessive.. I suppose they could always trade him if he accepts..

It doesn’t make sense to trade Gallardo. I don’t see it happening. JD will go a different route to add another bat. Lucroy?

Lucroy hasn’t been very good this year but I agree we need a catcher now that Alfaro is no longer in the plans.

I think we’ll be fine for a little while with Chirinos and Telis.

The Yankees would seem to be a good fit as a trade partner.. Murphy is hitting fairly well in a very limited capacity and he could be an excellent starter if given the chance.. Sanchez is also getting closer but would clearly be a bat first option.. Scouting reports have said that he is finally showing maturity and starting to live up to all of the hype.. He could be similar to Lamb from Kansas City.. Going from top prospect to disappointment back to top prospect.. With McCann and Murphy holding down the MLB spots and Romine in front of him Sanchez could be expendable.. The Yankees also have Torrens following right behind Sanchez.. He is supposed to be even better than Sanchez but he is out for the year with injuries..

I forgot about Samardzija possible being available.. Although I think Gallardo has been superior to him this year, Samardzija has more of an established track record as a #2 or a borderline Ace. I think Samardzija is going to be too expensive for the Yankees taste though.. Unless, the White Sox are willing to accept 4 lesser prospects in the 10-20 range.. I don’t think Cashman would have much trouble letting those go.. I think he has a man crush on Severino and Judge and they won’t be going anywhere.. He would probably part with Jagielo as well.. Headley has 3rd locked up for the next few years and Jagielo is a legit prospect that should be given a chance somewhere..

Well maybe the Giants, Yankees or Dodgers will give us something for Gallardo now that Price looks to be gone. I’d prefer a young bullpen piece but I’m not really picky at this point because Gallardo has no future in Texas.

If the Rangers would consider a piece for the future Lindgren would be a good fit.. He is a lefty but is equally good against lefties and righties.. He is out until September because of bone chips that he had removed but he would be a solid long term bullpen answer for Texas.. He has very good potential to be a closer and very little chance he would get that opportunity in New York.. He is probably the one bullpen piece that the Yankees have besides Betances and Miller that would be worth someone like Gallardo.. Of course the fanboys are gonna say Shreeve or even Wilson would be enough but that is not true.. With Gallardo being the best pitching option out there right now he is gonna be expensive.. Lindgren and Murphy should be enough to get it done..

I’ve been following baseball for 45 years now and can’t remember a trade deadline like this one. I believe that it’s a sign of the game, social media, and the overall state of baseball today. I’m enjoying it, and think it’s awesome.

I agree with you as usual Red.. Gallardo is a perfect fit for San Fran and regardless if they get him or not at the deadline, I think they will chase him in the off season..
