White Sox, Dodgers Nearing Trade; Frankie Montas Involved

By Steve Adams | December 16, 2015 at 11:02am CDT

The White Sox and Dodgers are nearing the completion of a trade, reports Yahoo’s Jeff Passan (on Twitter). Top right-handed pitching prospect Frankie Montas would head to the Dodgers in the deal, Passan notes, so it figures to be a fairly significant move. Passan does add that Yasiel Puig is not a part of the developing transaction.

Specific parameters beyond that remain unclear, but both clubs aim to contend in 2016, so each team will likely be acquiring players that can contribute in immediate fashion. (Montas, who made his Major League debut in 2015, fits that bill for the Dodgers.) The White Sox could use upgrades at shortstop and one of second base or third base (Brett Lawrie will man the other position).

Not likely if ChiSox sending back their top pitching prospect. Also wouldn’t make sense for LA to send Puig in a deal headlined by Montas. Probably going to be a big deal with 6+ players switching teams.

Montas isn’t their top pitching prospect.

I’d imagine this has to be Puig. Don’t know why they’d give up Montas otherwise.

LA wouldn’t give up Puig for Montas. Puig could be packaged for a bigger return than Montas who is probably ranked around 50-60 as far as top prospects go. The jury is still out on Montas as to whether he’ll be a 2-3 type starter or a reliever.

Dodgers will need more once they give Urias, De Leon and Holmes up for J. Fernandez..

I’m hearing this might be a 3-way with Frazier moving too.

That would be a huge get for the White Sox. Wasn’t sure they’d have enough to get Fraizer. Instantly makes them relevant if true.

I don’t think this will involve one of the Dodgers outfielders. At this point, the White Sox have Eaton, Cabrera, and Garcia in the outfield. Unless they’re going to move Avi or Cabrera, I don’t see a fit there. However, White Sox are in need of a 2B/3B to pair with Brett Lawrie. I could see a straight up Jose Peraza for Frankie Montas deal. Dodgers also have Kike Hernandez, Alex Guerrero, and Justin Turner at those positions.

Never mind. This is a 3-team deal. Frazier is indeed going to Chicago.

If the Sox are looking for 2B and 3B then the Dodgers don’t have anything to deal, and they aren’t going to let Seager go for anyone. Hmmm.
