Latest On Yoenis Cespedes

By Jeff Todd | January 19, 2016 at 3:21pm CDT

The departure of Justin Upton from the free agent market leaves the spotlight squarely on fellow star outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. We recently heard of interest from as many as ten teams and the possibility of a fairly short signing timeline. And there’s been some chatter today as his market begins to take greater form.

Here’s the latest:

  • Marlins president David Samson tells reporters, including Bob Nightengale of USA Today, that his team has no interest in signing Cespedes (Twitter link). Samson cited the team’s already crowded outfield picture as a reason for not pursuing the slugger.

Earlier Updates

  • The Marlins “have discussed pursuing” the star Cuban on some kind of “short-term deal,” Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports on Twitter. But he says that it’s hard to see the club being in the lead for his services, and it’s also hard to disagree with that assessment. For such a move to come together, Rosenthal suggests, Miami would likely need to line up a deal involving center fielder Marcell Ozuna. (Presumably, Christian Yelich would slide to center.)
  • Rosenthal also tweets that the Nationals are indeed interested in Cespedes, too — but only if his asking price comes down. We heard mention earlier today (via BobNightengale of USA Today, on Twitter) that both the Nats and the Astros had some discussions on Upton and might also be involved on Cespedes. It’s a bit of a stretch to imagine the Nats adding Cespedes, at least without making another move, though Washington is perhaps better able to take on his salary obligations than are other organizations with rumored interest. From a roster perspective, the team could in theory demote or trade Michael Taylor, put Ben Revere in a timeshare with Jayson Werth, and utilize Bryce Harper and/or Cespedes in center when Revere isn’t in the lineup.
  • The Braves are yet another N.L. East club with continued amenability to a short-term pact with the star outfielder, David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweets. As with the other teams, a trade — probably involving Nick Markakis or Ender Inciarte — could conceivably go along with a signing scenario. But O’Brien’s cautionary words seem worth heeding: “Don’t hold your breath.”
  • We touched upon where things stand with the incumbent Mets this morning, though we haven’t heard of any recent movement on the team’s stance. (No word from the Phillies, alas.) Of course, it’s certainly plausible to imagine teams from other divisions remaining involved or joining the hunt.

C’mon JD, Texas could really use hit bat and glove. He also won’t cost a draft pick and would open up many more trade possibilities in the future.

That would be interesting, if the Rangers cut loose Hamilton.
Funny thing is a lot teams would have to juggle something in order to sign Cespedes. I don’t see a perfect fit for him anywhere.

He’s still a fit in Baltimore, if they are willing to give him the AAV and he’s willing to take a two-year deal. But baseball=wise, there’s a match.

I would be interested, but I hope he knows how to play RF
He was not much of a CF”er from what i saw.
A good lf’er with good pop. He would help I think, but how much is anyone’s guess.

Hamilton could easily become their 4th outfielder or a nice bench piece. Don’t forget, they don’t have to pay him any salary in 2016, so if he was on the bench it wouldn’t affect them in any way.

They have options that would cost less than the $5m they have left under the cap. Trade options that is, including two of the Rockies guys. I suspect they’re just waiting to see if they are going to get a bad surprise from arbitration before making that move.

The Angels? How bout the Cardinals?! We have an absolute mountain of money. Probably in the top 5 wealthiest teams in baseball, yet we can’t go get Upton or Cespedes to fill a huge need in our lineup? The Cubs now have exactly zero holes in their lineup. We have got to do something to stay competitive. I understand the conservative approach, and that they want Piscotty to play, but we’ve got to go get a proven IMPACT bat. Because the Cubs are not looking at our projected starting lineup and getting scared about anyone 1-9 AT ALL.

Couldn’t agree more. Not a Cards fan, but if they are truly interested in holding their own in that division, they need more offense. With Holiday coming off the books after this year (small buyout in ’17) they need to fill a spot in the OF and a glaring weakness in the lineup. If they were truly in on Heyward to the end, that tells me that they aren’t 100% comfortable with an outfield of Holiday (huge durability questions) and 2 youngsters who have yet to play a full season in the majors in Grichuk and Piscotty. Cespedes can play either corner spot and bat behind Molina and it will make a huge difference for them on both sides.

Exactly. We have a ton of money coming off the books in Holliday, and in a couple years Peralta. Plus, our new TV deal that’s kicking in in a couple years as well. That thing is going to be a monstrous source of income. Not to mention that absolute cash cow they have at ballpark village! Yet another revenue stream! I’ve been proven wrong by doubting MO in the past, but we had 2 huge contributing pieces not only leave OUR team in Heyward and Lackey….but they went to the CUBS!!! Who embarrassed our asses out of the playoffs before they even had them OR Ben Zobrist! This winter had such an amazing free agent class, and next winters looks terrible, so now was the time to strike.

Yeah. Let Piscotty platoon with Adams/Moss at first and let him be the fourth outfielder. Cespedes can play right for a season and then slide over to left in 2017 after Holliday leaves, putting Piscotty back into the starting right field position. This is a move that makes a lot of sense for St. Louis, but it still seems unlikely that it will happen.

Agree!! Mozeliak has completely blown this offseason, way too conservative and frugal. Our offense is horrible and we lost one of our better bats and have replaced it with nothing. The fact that we are relying on Moss/Adams combo is terrible. Put Piscotty at 1st and get a bat in the OF. Holliday is about done as well. There is nothing intimidating about this current lineup at all.

You St Louis fans are a Joke, saying your so scared of the Cubs that you NEED Cespedes.

Aren’t the Cardinals the team that won 100 games last year even though they were riddled with injuries? Aren’t they the team that has won the NL Central year after year?

The Cubs are good, no doubting that… Pirates too..

But I don’t see where the Cards got weaker. They have Wainwright who was lost all of last year. Yes, they lost Lynn this year, but replaced him with Leake.

The Cubs are putting the BEST RF into CF… that is just dumb, he’s just an ok CF.
They get rid of a young Castro that seemed alive again at 2B and replaced him with Zobrist, past his prime (he used to be a 20/20 guy, remember??) And his best quality is that he plays everywhere – now he’ll just play 2B. They also now take away AB’s from Baez and Coghlan. They signed an old man in Lackey, who won’t pitch nearly as well n Chicago as he did in spacious St. Louis. Arrieta had the year of his LIFE, a one time beautiful year… but we all know, he’ll never come close to that again… He can go 17-9 and still be 5 games worse than 2015.

Think the Cubs got so much better with Heyward and Zobrist?
      In 2015:
      Heyward/Zobrist:- 155 Runs / 26 HRs / 116 RBI / 27 SB
      Fowler/Castro – 154 Runs / 28 HRs / 115 RBI / 25 SB

Pitching wise, they lost Pitchers that went 21-7 w/ 8 saves.

Adding Lackey won’t make up for that.

Ender is 25, costs nothing, and was worth 3.3 fWAR last year (5.3 bWAR). That’s almost $25m of excess value just in 2015 alone, and using the lower WAR number. I can think of a very large group of “power bats” that would be worth way less than him. Most of them, in fact. Ender’s really good.

I think this has less to do with red flags & more to do with the OF’er market just taking some time to shake out. A team is going to pony up & give Cespedes his fair market value & I think they’ll be wise to do so. Top tier OF’s won’t come cheap over the next couple years. So if you are a team with a hole in the OF & plan to fix it sometime within the next 24 months, You could certainly do a whole lot worse than signing Cespedes at the going rate. These recent OF’ers signing seem well aware of the likely declining supply for quality OF’ers in coming years. These early year player options both Heyward & Upton requested were negotiated for good reason.

Many White Sox fans seemed ready to jump off a cliff following the news of Justin Upton’s signing with the rival Tigers. Before they contemplate such a move they might want to ask themselves two questions:

1-Why did the Tigers, who had only been associated with Yoenis Cespedes in speculative reports, suddenly take comparable dollars to sign Upton, a player who had draft pick compensation attached to him and weaker defensive metrics? All signs had pointed towards a reunification with Cespedes after his positive showing in Detroit before his summer deadline trade to the Mets. Perhaps the Tigers already knew that Cespedes had a more likely deal lined up and that they were not his preferred destination. Maybe that team was the White Sox?

2-Who are the primary suitors left still likely to sign Cespedes based on need, team finances, roster implications and status as contenders and what team might Cespedes actually prefer to play for with money being relatively equal, including league preference, personal comfort level and a favorable ‘hitter-friendly home park? Narrowing down the choices, the White Sox seem to be as sensible a fit as any of the remaining clubs being speculated. It’s all on owner Jerry Reinsdorf and his willingness to open up his wallet for Cespedes.

Agreed. Guys take 1 year deals to rebuild their value. He is coming off a monster year that was much better than his previous 2. And unless he is again traded mid season he will have draft pick compensation tied to him, which he is free of right now. He is just waiting it out trying to get the most money, but it could be said to what we see and can predict that it doesn’t look like he played his cards right. Of course it takes just one team to offer a monster deal.

According to esteemed Chicago baseball writer Bruce Levine, the White Sox are reportedly one of the five finalists in the bidding for free agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Of course they were also among the finalists in the bidding for Japaneses FA pitcher Masahiro Tanaka two offseasons ago and came up far short of the winning Yankee offer. Make it happen this time JR, because as we all know, being close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. (lol)

When I think of the best ‘”fit” for YC I think WhiteSox. Which I for one would LOVE seeing as though the Southsiders are my AL team.

What”s his ceiling? If Upton set the most current price at $22M-AAV and Cespedes has better offensive numbers, could he be asking for 6/$160 w/ opt outs in years 3 thru 5 or something on that order..? The White Sox certainly have the cash to do that…and as of right now they have a pretty open end on payroll for the years to come.

If that’s the case, you are no real Chicago baseball fan. He often gets the first scoop on breaking news involving either the Cubs or White Sox and regularly appears on local radio as an expert in all things baseball.

Right. Only sixty years. Hawk Harrelson has been an announcer for an eternity. It doesn’t mean he’s any good.

The Phillies are the team that has the money and can offer the years.
Opt out after 4th year option. Phillies contend in 2 years… in the meanwhile, he’ll bring the fans out to the club and sell a lot of jerseys. Put him in CBP and watch his numbers remain like 2015.

No down side. Phillies need offense and allows their prospects to mature more in the minors.

With recent news out of Milwaukee purporting the desire of All-Star catcher Jonathon Lucroy seeking a trade to a contender, along with the reported availability of star right fielder Ryan Braun on the rebuilding Brewers, would it not make some sense for the White Sox to investigate a trade for both.

I would gladly take the lot of them on the White Sox provided they didn’t have to include either of their top two prospects in any trade, #1 shortstop Tim Anderson or #2 right-handed pitcher Carson Fulmer. The guaranteed money owed to catcher Lucroy and Braun would be comparable to the likely dollar investment required to sign free agent left fielder Yoenis Cespedes alone.

Having 29 year old Lucroy fill the catching position for two seasons at the cheap sum of $9.25M and Braun as a RF/LF/DH for 5 years through 2020 for $96M seems reasonable in today’s MLB market. Braun’s contract also comes with a mutual $15M option for 2021 ($4M buyout) that might line up favorably with the long term commitments already in place with Chris Sale, Jose Abreu, Jose Quintana and Adam Eaton. Both Brewers have health concerns attached to them but still seem like a risk worth pursuing pending the return of assets that would be required with their acquisitions.

Breaking news/rumors: More legitimate sources, including CSN’s Dan Hayes and MLB’s Ken Rosenthal are now reporting that the White Sox are close to signing Yoenis Cespedes to a 5 year contract.

The tweet associated with Ken Rosenthal appears to be a fake. It disappeared from twitter about an hour after being posted. It had a legitimate link to Dan Hayes, who was given credit for breaking the story on the Rosenthal “tweet”, but that “report” was never found.
