Last night’s news that the Tigers had landed Justin Upton surprised some, who felt that his market may have dried up. But while pitching was first in the queue this winter, we’ve seen a steady stream of position player signings at or near expectations ever since we hit 2016.
With the agreement set to be announced tomorrow after a physical, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today (Twitter link), here are some reactions to and ramifications of the move:
- Both the Nationals and Astros had expressed interest in Upton, and “may” look instead at top remaining free agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets. Neither team looks in need of a player at that position, of course, but both are in position to be opportunistic. (Houston has been fairly quiet after a bold trade deadline, while Washington still appears to be about $30MM shy of its 2015 payroll after several moves.)
- The Braves also had conversations with Upton, says Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, but the club was only discussing a six-year deal at a “significantly lower average annual value” than Upton’s new contract provides. GM John Coppolella acknowledged the chats, adding that his club will “remain both opportunistic and disciplined.”
- Tigers owner Mike Ilitch was “absolutely ready” to sign Chris Davis, tweets Jon Heyman, but GM Al Avila talked him out of taking that route. From where I stand, that seems wise; unless Detroit was convinced that Davis could play the corner outfield on a regular basis for at least another year or two, it’s hard to see how he’d fit.
- Once the decision was made to focus on Upton, Avila and skipper Brad Ausmus went to Phoenix and negotiated with Upton over the weekend, Nightengale reports. Per the report, the White Sox, Rangers, and Astros were other key teams in the hunt for Upton.
- A source with knowledge of the Astros’ side of things tells Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle that the interest was never very “serious.” It does not appear that the ’Stros talked about much more than a three-year scenario. (While it isn’t clear what kind of ideas might have been batted around, MLBTR’s Steve Adams has written about the plausibility of an opt-out-driven, high-AAV, multi-year pillow contract concept.)
- Ilitch’s latest big move proves that he’s the “most munificent owner in professional sports,” Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports argues. Certainly, he’s proven willing on plenty of occasions to plunk down the cash needed to arm his ballclub, this time cracking the luxury tax ceiling to add Upton. (They’ve done so previously on at least one occasion.)
- From my perspective, it seems that Detroit got a nice price on a prime-aged free agent. The price comes in well below our expectations here at MLBTR, and even further below what Upton might have commanded with a bigger platform year. It may or may not be reasonable to hope that he has some growth remaining as a player, but even the current package makes for a solid investment given his age. As always, there’s risk. But as major win-now, open-market moves go, it’s hard to do much better.

I think Illitch should be applauded for putting up the cash to put the Tigers in a great position to contend. If anyone else thought that Upton was the missing cog in their roster, he wouldn’t have signed for so little.
baseballrat
Signed for so little?? Dude is making $22 mil a yr with an opt out after two. How do you know what other people thought? Nobody thought Detroit in til last night
hinerism
Detroit has been a major player for a bat from day one. Avila outmaneuvered the field and snatched Upton when the price came down to what the Tigers thought he was worth. Cespedes was number 1 on the Tigers board but he refused to come back to Detroit.

Every tigers fan that truly follows the game knew that we were “in” in Davis, Cespedes, or Upton. The Tigs spend too much money to allow such premium talent to go elsewhere when the owner is willing to commit the funds. I would’ve preferred Cespedes considering the early opt out and his superior defender, but he’s going to pull 160 out if somebody so this was the more responsible move.

Wish Arte would exceed the CBT for the Angels.

What’s the deal… When the Steinbrenner’s were reinvesting their money back into the team, it was buying a championship. Now, when an owner reinvests they should be applauded? I’m all for spending the team, just not the continual double standard. Good for the Tigers and their fans.

I just wish the Ford family would take note

NFL is a salary cap league. The Lions do pay their players nicely.

Can only imagine what Atlanta’s AAV proposed to Upton was. But glad they are at least open and not putting too much out there right now. Look for a deadline trade for a controllable bat and/or pitcher.
NL_East_Rivalry
Glad to see the Braves putting in their due diligence. It will be interesting to see how their willingness to spend grows with the coming years along side the pressure to compete.
JoeyPankake
Even if the Braves would have been willing to match the AAV, giving him an opt out would have made no sense for them.
NL_East_Rivalry
I actually feel the opposite. His opt out date is the same that all the big names come on the scene. Braves would then spend their money on a better player if he opts out.
Braves have said they want to compete these next two years even if they aren’t strong enough, this would help to show the fan base that they are trying.

Many White Sox fans seemed ready to jump off a cliff following the news of Justin Upton’s signing with the rival Tigers. Before they contemplate such a move they might want to ask themselves two questions:
1-Why did the Tigers, who had only been associated with Yoenis Cespedes in speculative reports, suddenly take comparable dollars to sign Upton, a player who had draft pick compensation attached to him and weaker defensive metrics? All signs had pointed towards a reunification with Cespedes after his positive showing in Detroit before his summer deadline trade to the Mets. Perhaps the Tigers already knew that Cespedes already had a more likely deal lined up and that they were not his preferred destination. Maybe that team was the White Sox?
2-Who are the primary suitors left still likely to sign Cespedes based on need, team finances, roster implications and status as contenders and what team might Cespedes actually prefer to play for with money being relatively equal, including league preference, personal comfort level and a favorable ‘hitter-friendly home park? Narrowing down the choices, the White Sox seem to be as sensible a fit as any of the remaining clubs being speculated. It’s all on owner Jerry Reinsdorf and his willingness to open up his wallet for Cespedes.
Los Calcetines Rojos
I think most of the Sox fans frustration stems from the front office putting on this show of contending but then not being willing to take a risk on a contract or a player that can put them over the top. Couple that with down right dumb moves like the Danks extension and the Dunn signing and you create a losing franchise. Nearly every off season, since they won it all, it has been false faces and rumors with no results with 2008 being an outlier. Add in the fact the cubs are contending and it makes for a very volatile fanbase on the south side. They want a contender not this middle ground of guys in their prime surrounded by 4A players and until that happens they will continue to be pissed off at the front office.

The draft pick meant little to them (3rd round pick). The two players had basically equal value when you factor in both offense and defense. Upton has a better OBP and will fit perfectly into the #2 slot. And he is younger.
And most importantly, he agreed to a TWO year deal with an insurance policy tacked on the end. Very likely the Tigers do not pay him a dollar after age 30 on his contract.
stymeedone
Cespedes has only one requirement: $$$$$$
Maybe the Tigers went for Upton because they already KNOW about Cespedes, enough to give up the pick.

HAHAHAA JERRY IS NOT GONNA OPEN HIS WALLET HE’S CHEAP AS PERSON
sportingdissent
It appears the Padres are entering the market for Cespedes. We know from history that they’re not afraid to open the wallet.
Even if not the Padres, it’s apparent that he’s not going to sign for 3 years, or anywhere close to 3 years. He’s getting a 6 year deal. If he settles, it’ll be for 5 years. No amount of stubbornness on Jerry Reinsdorf’s part is going to change that outcome. That is the value of a 30 something elite outfielder. It has been for years.
The days of owners like Reinsdorf offering players a job for a hot meal and a roof over their heads has been over for decades. If Reinsdorf can’t adapt, he needs to move on. Before there aren’t any White Sox fans left.
AshtonLover
Your thinking to hard. Upton is younger, more consistent, and cheaper. Also, if Cespedes has such a good deal “lined up” Why would he not take it?
Aaron Sapoznik
We’re all entitled to an opinion.
The only sure fact is that Justin Upton is younger than Yoenis Cespedes, by two years.
Upton’s better “consistency” is arguable offensively and even more so defensively. He also has twice the MLB track record of Cespedes. With Upton, teams pretty much know what they are getting with him after 8+ season in the big leagues. Cespedes, on the other hand, put up his best metrics last season in his “walk year, a 6.3 composite WAR with the Tigers and Mets, far better than Upton who hadn’t approached a season even comparable to Cespedes since his 6.1 WAR year in 2011 with the Diamondbacks.
I still maintain that Cespedes would have been a better fit in Detroit than Upton. We will find out the ultimate cost value as soon as Cespedes signs, but one thing is for sure…Cespedes will not cost his new team a draft pick this June.
NL_East_Rivalry
Not saying this is he case, but he could have a 150 offer out there and is holding out for more
bucknerforhall
White Sox ( & the Orioles for that matter) should blow it up.
Maybe at the deadline they will ?
they could get a haul for Sale – 4 prospects?
a haul for Quintana -3 prospects
a haul for Abreu -3 prospects
a haul for T Frazier -3 prospects ?
they could hit the re set button – so easily and be set up for the next 6 -7 years.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
this time cracking the luxury tax ceiling to add Upton…….I would not have done this.
Then again I am not Ilitch, but you gotta hand it to him he does spend his money!!!

So tired of hearing about Atlanta’s supposed due diligence on big-name free agents (Zobrist, Upton, et al). In every case, the players sign elsewhere and it comes out that the Braves were offering peanuts by comparison. Seems like a way for Coppy to be able to placate the fanbase by saying they were “talking with Player X’s representatives” without actually needing to commit any money whatsoever. And they’re pulling the same thing with Cespedes.
bobbleheadguru
For practical purposes, its only a two year deal: age 28 and age 29 seasons. The rest of this contract is little more than an insurance policy that will very likely not happen.
Upton will be a free agent when he is 30 again. The Tigers finagled two prime years out of him before that point at a below market rate.
Well done. The books will be cleared by the end of 2017.
baseballrat
You already know that Upton is gonna Opt-Out in 2017? Can I please use that Crystal ball when you are finished?
bobbleheadguru
My question to you: Why wouldn’t he become a free agent again in 2017?.
The rest of the contract is essentially an insurance policy for a major injury. Otherwise, he opts out.
Motown_Madness44
I feel now that teams are afraid to sign cespedes due to the fact his best year ever was last year (contract year) and teams figure once he gets the big bucks he’ll go back to his lazy self.
baseballrat
You mean when hit 71 home runs
baseballrat
262 in the prev 3yrs?? Your name fits you well.
baseballrat
262 rbi.
Motown_Madness44
He hit over 100 rbi’s twice one last year and 30 home runs once agin last year before last year his contract year he was just above average player what stands out is his defense So please get ur facts straight their you rat. Your name speaks for it’s self!
baseballrat
You’re an IDIOT.. You just said in your opinion he was just an “above average” player b4 last year. Haven’t seen ANY above average LAZY players in ANY sport.
Motown_Madness44
Wow your Clueless. What I’m saying is he’s just above average and is not worth the money his about to get due to his history of laziness. Simple as that.
baseballrat
You’re the one posting nonsense.. I’ll tell you what. I will take that LAZY player
Motown_Madness44
Ok you do that I’ll take upton who’s younger and just as good and is proven! You must be a Jay’s fan u rat.
lonestardodger
Why have the Astros not been linked to David Freese yet? He seems like a good fit with their hole at third base.
Motown_Madness44
Idk but ur probably not gonna find that out on a tigers post u should try an Angels post. Lol
