MLBTR Podcast: O’s Late Moves & Under-the-Radar Deals

By Cray Allred | February 12, 2016 at 6:36pm CDT

Host Jeff Todd and MLBTR’s Steve Adams break down the latest chatter around the Orioles — in particular, the club’s reported interest in qualifying offer-bound free agents Yovani Gallardo and Dexter Fowler.

Then, they talk through some of their most and least-liked, under-the-radar moves of the winter thus far. Among many other transactions discussed, Steve likes the Mariners’ addition of Nori Aoki and the Rangers’ move to bring Tony Barnette back stateside, while Jeff questions the Rockies’ signing of Jason Motte. The addition of veteran righty Tyler Clippard by the Diamondbacks, meanwhile, is a source of debate.

The #Orioles have competed for the division every year under Buck and DD except for year one. It’s hard to want more as an #Orioles fan knowing Angelos won’t buy a Price or even Zimmerman, so with the recent debacle of picks (results based), let’s get an innings eater and OBP asset in LF and play ball.
My hope was that they finally pried Ross from SD or even Cashner who I think will bounce back.
KG has had to develop in the show while being yoked up and down in the options game. One scout through Rosenthal stated he was watching the best arm in baseball in KG’s debut. This kid still has a chance at being very good.
I don’t like the Gallardo signing as a baseball fan. I do not mind the Fowler signing considering how it impacts the defense in LF/RF while adding OBP to the top of the lineup.

I agree with you I’m not big at all on Gallardo but like Fowler a ton

I like Fowler as well, and I think that Bruce could be a good fallback option, I do however have to ask you what prospects are in the orioles system that would Bring a return of Cashner or Ross?

Ross is a FA in ’18. Cashner in ’17, so whoever the prospect(s) may be there is a swap of 5-6 years of service time. We’ve seen that have a profound impact on the players switching sides.
i would say Hunter Harvey and Mancini is worth 2 seasons of Tyson Ross.
Cashner xFIP has been over 3.50 for 2 seasons and SD needs a 1B, so again Mancini could be enough. If not Mountcastle, Stewart…Frazier was just dealt for Peraza, so maybe SD is waiting until the deadline to try and have more leverage.
