The Padres have sent a scout to watch Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports. It’s far from clear whether that is an indication of serious interest, of course, let alone whether the scout is watching more than just Sandoval. Regardless, it’s the latest hint that there could be some remaining trade chatter to be held between these organizations, who already struck a significant swap early in the offseason.
Here’s more from the eastern divisions:
- The Rangers are not only continuing their search for another catcher, but could look outside the organization for rotation help, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. A.J. Griffin may have the inside track to take the fifth starter’s job at present, says Grant, but there’s some concern about the overall starting pitching depth as camp comes to a close. As for the backstop situation, it doesn’t appear that much has changed, but Texas is still looking to improve upon its reserve options — if not to strike a more significant upgrade. (Grant notes that the club has inquired on Derek Norris of the Padres and Bryan Holaday of the Tigers.)
- Of course, interest doesn’t always mean that a deal gets done, and significant spring trades are rare. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports also reports that the Rangers have real interest in both areas (Twitter links), but he says the club thinks it has only an “outside chance” at adding a catcher and is “doubtful” to find a new pitcher. All in all, both reports suggest that Texas is looking at its options but is hardly certain to add outside pieces. And still others suggest there’s not much reason to expect movement. Jeff Wilson of the Forth Worth Star-Telegram tweets that outside inquiries have mostly been tire-kicking exercises, while MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan adds on Twitter that club officials have suggested to him that the final rotation piece will come from inside the organization.
- Reclamation righty Matt Bush isn’t in the mix for an Opening Day pen spot with the Rangers, Grant also writes, but he has been enormously impressive this spring and could be an option later in the season. Bush’s story is well-known, of course — the former first overall draft pick recently finished a prison term for severely injuring a man in a DUI.
- Aaron Sanchez has been named as the Blue Jays’ fifth starter, manager John Gibbons told reporters (including John Lott of Blue Jays Nation) this morning. It won’t be a season-long assignment for Sanchez, however, as the righty seems to be under an innings cap and will eventually be transitioned into the bullpen as he approaches his limit. The 23-year-old has never thrown more than 133 1/3 innings in a season. Sanchez and Gavin Floyd emerged as the top two contenders for the fifth starter’s job during camp, and Floyd will join Jesse Chavez in the bullpen while Drew Hutchison has been optioned to Triple-A. It stands to reason that Floyd, Chavez or Hutchison will all be rotation candidates when Sanchez is moved back to relief pitching.
- The Astros have decided to give an Opening Day roster spot to young first baseman Tyler White, as Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports. Houston’s first-base situation has been in flux all spring, but it appears that the 33rd-round draftee is in line for a significant opportunity to take the position and run with it. He is one of several players in the organization who have impressed this spring; third base prospect Colin Moran has also compiled a 1.000+ OPS in more than thirty plate appearances, though Drellich notes on Twitter that he’s not considered a roster option at this point. The same holds true of A.J. Reed, of course, who could also have a chance to make an impact later in the season.
- Angels GM Billy Eppler says that he is “not optimistic” of adding to his roster before the season starts, MLB.com’s Alden Gonzalez reports. Gonzalez provides a deep rundown of the club’s remaining roster considerations.

Would Red Sox fans be happy to get rid of Panda?
aprogie
I’d be pretty happy
math91
What would it take to get it done ? Sandoval + Porcello + 30 M $ + Owens/Johnson vs Shields or Ross ?
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I can see them trying to money swap with Shields. I don’t think the red Soxs would have interest in Shields. But for Ross just Owens doesn’t come close.
User 4245925809
It would allow Shaw to play F/T, which he has shown all spring he’s not only able to play competently, but better than Sandoval and Holt to back him up.
issue is what kind of prospect they have to give up to take on a SP that will have problems (Shields) in most every game he starts at Fenway. Does Farrel juggle his rotation to avoid it, ala Zimmer from 40y ago? That used to infuriate his pitchers.
start_wearing_purple
We’ll take warm up equipment.
gomerhodge71
Padres merely sent a scout to look at Panda. Maybe the scout has a weight problem and it’s their way of saying “there’s your future”.
realgone2
My good friend is a redsux fan and I know he’d be thrilled.
thechiguy
Seems like most Red Sox fans who comment here are way more than thrilled about their team, even though a few mention that Shaw(I think it’s Shaw they speak of) would be an upgrade, but the majority of what I read coming from the Red Sox camp here seem to implore that they are more than thrilled with their team and virtually have no holes. But it is interesting that this would come up just as we are set to open the season. Very odd timing.
aprogie
dude seriously shut up. “all redsox fans think that their team is perfect” no we do not. we are well aware that there are many potential holes in our lineup. just because bigpapi4ever thinks that you cant generalize the ENTIRE redsox fanbase to be like that. its just ignorant on your part.
User 4245925809
I agree and THANKS.. Some of us enjoy boards like this and appreciate the work of Tim and his staff very much.
Some of us have been fans of the Sox since berfore the Impossible Dream Team of ’67 also and follow them with each tidbit of information that they can find.. The internet is a wonderful thing now…
Thank you for that post.. 10 check plusses to u…
thechiguy
aprogie: I must have missed the post that mentioned that the Sox were perfect…….. I merely said what I read here on the norm, and that was that most Sox fans are happy with their team….. But i’m still looking for the post that said:
“all redsox fans think that their team is perfect”
My internet must be broke, because that is not what i said if you were referring to me.
sirrichard1975
Please, Padres, DO NOT trade for Sandoval…He is DONE
thechiguy
Nothing against Panda and his supporters, but I think if AJ grabs Panda and he doesn’t pan out…. I think AJ will be headed out the door as soon as the door closes on the regular season. His aggressive style just hasn’t seemed to work in the short sample size, but it also appears that he is memorized by big names and taking chances.

Shields and Bud Norris salary for Sanderval
ZachPadres24
The Padres aren’t paying Bud Norris anything, all of it is from Baltimore
gorav114
Not true. First with the name Padres in your name you should know he signed as a free agent with the Braves for this year at 2.5 million. The Orioles stopped paying him after end of last season. The Atlanta Braves are paying him now and he actually plays for the Braves not the Padres.
ZachPadres24
I never said he plays for the Padres..
Gogerty
I think this whole section was mixed up between Derek and Bud Norris.
TwinsVet
If the Sox dealt Panda it’d be as a contract dump.
dan-9
Yes, I’d be thrilled too. I can’t see it happening though. Maybe a swap of bad contracts: Panda for Shields. But even then, I imagine the Sox would have to throw in cash/prospects.
stymeedone
Shields is not a bad contract. No excess value, but not bad. Now, Panda’s is BAD.
Ayy-Aron
It’s not a Red Sox post until one of the @bigpapi4ever post.

Matt Bush is trash who should be banned for life. MLB banned Barry Bonds forever and he never even killed anyone, but rapists & murderers are A-OK. Cool league, real consistent.
adshadbolt
If the mlb banned Barry why is he the hitting coach for the Marlins.
BoldyMinnesota
This is such an ignorant comment. That’s not how life works, people deserve second chances.
User 4245925809
Oh, yeah.. I’ve posted about that here for years here.. Wife beaters? Nooo problemo. (Elijah Dukes, several current, Nijer Morgan) Racists? Delmon Young, Luke Scott, sometimes doubts on Chris Perez…
Game was fine with those, as long as they produced and there is the NFL/NBA, which allows outright thuggery. I’d like for MLB to come down HARD on transgressions and keep the game clean myself, harder than the criminal justice system now does.
beauvandertulip
Lol Barry Bonds wasn’t Banned for life..
sirrichard1975
Matt Bush didn’t kill anybody either
AidanVega123
The amount of ignorance in your comment burns my eyes, bud.
thechiguy
I swear I think that Shields is more than just a bad contract. The world seems to hate him for some reason. I think he adds value to any team he is on. He actually improved his K9 rate this season with a career high in what was already an impressive resume. I must be the only guy in the world who thinks Shields is worth his money.
mookiessnarl
It depends on the team. His homerun rate last season was terrifying.
thechiguy
Agreed!
O’s = He could be a 2nd or 3rd in the rotation….
Cubs= 4th or 5th
Angels= He fits!
Just to name a few…..
I mean there are a lot of teams running way worse alternatives than Big game James….. I know his contract would have to factor in for teams like the Halos….. But… He just seems like he is not washed up to me….
mookiessnarl
Can’t see the O’s. Camden yards is too small, and it’s in the same division with Fenway, Yankee Stadium and Rogers Centre. He could put up some fairly ugly numbers pitching in the AL East. He doesn’t seem washed up and his win-loss record and ERA both indicate he wasn’t a horrible player last season. The Pads just have to find the right fit for him and eat a chunk of the salary. I just don’t want him on the Red Sox. Porcello is enough to deal with. It would be like adding a second pitcher with the same exact issues. If the Mariners were looking he’d be a perfect fit for them. Giants too.
stymeedone
He pitched most of his career in the East with Tampa. Wouldn’t be anything new to him.
thechiguy
I see your point mookie’s lip! I will continue to root for him and hopefully one trade scenario one day doesn’t just offer him up as the salary dump. I love Hendricks as the Cubs 4th or 5th, but for playoff purposes I would much rather have Shields even though he is several years older. But, I see how he would not be set up for success in the AL East, even though he was once the ace of that entire division. I could imagine it would be tough for Red Sox fans who know much more about their staff than I do to even want a homer prone pitcher on the wrong side of 30. I just hope he gets away from SD and makes his contract look less like a burden.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
For one, if I’m Preller, the only way I trade Sandoval is if it’s for something like Taylor Lindsey with the Sox paying at least 90% of Pablo’s contract.
For two, Preller needs to just trade or release Solarte right now. It’s obvious that he doesn’t see him as the answer at 3rd.
thechiguy
Boston definitely has the cash to eat some of that contract. If it helps the team going forward I would imagine cash would not be a problem to make a deal happen.
Injediwetrust
Why would you send Solarte packing for Panda when he played better than Panda and is a fraction of the cost.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
I wouldn’t, but Preller is our GM and it’s obvious that he doesn’t want Solarte.
zippytms
Then why is he our starting third baseman?
disgruntledreader 2
Because Jose Fernandez hasn’t been cleared to sign yet and Preller can apparently only add one option on the left side of the infield per offseason.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
He won’t be when Preller signs/trades for someone else.
bigpapisucks4life
Maybe your soxs could trade shaw, ink and price for shields.
thesandlot
If the RS found someone desperate enough to take the Stay Puff Marshamellow man it they would have to eat at least 90% of his salary and take James Shields (who by the way, gave up 33 home runs in a pitcher friendly ballpark, plus a decent prospect from their overhyped farm system). Yes, the same farm system that declared Will Middlebrooks the second coming of Wade Boggs, Craig Hansen the closer of the future, and Brian Rose the next Pedro, to name a few. Buyer beware, read the label carefully, and understand the RS have a long history of selling you an “as is” product with no warranty of a proven track record above A ball.
As for some of the other posts:
Big “Pedi” is not a first ballot HOF or a HOFamer at all, unless it is the “clear creme” HOF. Too many others who played the game clean through the century that deserve that honor before steroid users get in.
As for some proclaiming a first place finish for the Sox, remember your biggest challenge may be in your own dugout. Besides dating a NESN reporter (a RS tradition), Farrell is suspect at best as a manager.
Samuel
“Stay Puff Marshamellow man”
?
Funny, a year ago that’s not what I heard from Red Sox fans about that guy. But in the 60 years I’ve been following MLB, Red Sox fans have always been front runners and classless – dumping on players as they kick them out the door. For 30 years that franchise turns over more then 50% of its roster each year. Yeah, Red Sox ‘Tradition’.
pocc
How can Sox fans be frontrunners for the last 60 years if they didnt win anything until 2004 and lost in heartbreaking fashion both times they had a chance before that?. Your turning over MORE than 50% of their roster every year comment shows your nothing more than a clueless troll who obviously doesnt pay much attention to whats going on over on that team anyway.. Leave the trolling to bigpapi4ever at least hes entertaining even though he hates the Sox too.
parkdav
Dude has no chill
User 4245925809
” decent prospect from their overhyped farm system”
You mean that over hyped farm system that in the last 2 years has produced people, such as Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Blake Swihart, Christian Vazquez, Travis Shaw, Jackie Bradley…
Not many teams have produced like the Sox have, even with the 1-2 flops..
mike244
Lol. Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Blake Swihart, Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jon Lester, Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez, Josh Reddick, Kevin Youkilis, Jonathan Papelbon, among others.
What do they all have in common? They were all developed out of the Redsox system. Every orangization has countless busts, because prospects are just that.. They’re improven prospects. You’d be hard pressed to find 5 teams who have produced more talent than the Redsox over the last 10 or so years.
mike244
Hmm… Mookie Betts, Blake Swihart, Xander Bogaerts, Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester, Jacoby Ellsbury, Hanley Ramirez, Anthony Rizzo, Anibal Sanchez, Jonathan Papelbon, Josh Reddick, Jose Iglesias….
What do all these players have in common?! They all came out of the Redsox system..
Every team is going to have their share of busts, because prospects are prospects and unproven. This idea that he Redsox prospects are overrated is silly. You’d be hard presses to find 5 organizations who have had more talent come out of their system over the last 10 or 15 years
drum18
The One and Only Jimmy Shields for Tons ‘O Fun isn’t a bad deal. Perhaps each player rights himself by changing scenery: Shields pitches for a contender again in a tough – albeit familiar – division; Sandoval gets out of the microscope that is Boston baseball. Add whatever salary/other player considerations at your leisure, but I do think each player has something left and a return to familiarity may bring it out.
dan-9
Since you don’t believe that, why did you post it?
dan-9
And for all the people saying, “just ignore the troll!”, sure, but you could say that about any comment at all, no matter how off topic, inflammatory, or offensive it is.
At that point, what’s the point of having a moderation policy at all if you’re not going to use it?
Mark 21
There needs to be a REPORT button LOL This way all of us can just report him and when there is enough reports he gets banned automatically. I know he will just come back as another troll but then we do it all over again.
cvarneski
If you just read his posts with a thick, chowdery Bostonian accent he’s really not so bad.

How old are you bigpapi4ever
Gogerty
I seriously hope bigpapi4ever is under the age of 16. Because then I would laugh at everyone who rags on him and ridicules him. I think his trade proposals are hilarious. I used to get annoyed by then. But the more everyone gripes and complains about him, ridicules or pushes him, or even trolls him makes me laugh even more.
pittyguy2112
@thechiguy You wouldn’t want James Shields for the postseason. Look him up on bbref, his playoff stats are atrocious, 3-6 with a 5.46 ERA and 8 homers in 11 games. He may be one of the best innings eaters out there, but his arm must give out come October time.
pittyguy2112
People shouldn’t worry about his homerun rate though. He has pitched over 200 innings ever single year of his career with the exception of his rookie season, and in all of those seasons (except his rookie season) he has given up 20 or more homeruns. His only bad seasons besides his rookie season were in 2009 and 2010 when his ERA went above 4.00, so the homerun issue hasn’t held him back too much in his career. Not yet, at least
cubbies4life
the sox would be lucky to get the bullpen catcher for that fat tub of lard.
arc89
Now that is funny giving up a prospect for Sandoval. I hear its Matt Kemp and James Shields going to the sox for Sandoval and Swlhart.
1738hotlinebling
Nope , You got Sandoval, your gonna have to keep him
adyo4552
Trading Sandoval now would be dumb. He is at an all-time low in stock and youd get very little in return. Regression to the mean will pull him up before the all-star break. Then if you still prefer Shaw to Sandoval send Sandoval to a contender for a real piece.
Remember when they were shopping JBJ for next to nothing?
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Oh, and who do you suppose would trade a real piece for Sandoval?
canada09
You know… It’s easier to skip over 1 post that is annoying than to skip over that 1 post, plus 15-20 posts trolling, responding or trying to impersonate him lol. Makes it harder to scroll to the actual comments when everyone has to say something to or about him. Just saying.
beyou02215
As a Padres fan all I can say is this – The Pads had better not bring in Sandoval (unless he comes really cheap money-wise). Otherwise, the fan base should revolt!
pustule bosey
the biggest boos will come from giants fans – half of the ballpark are giants fans when they play @ petco ….
SixFlagsMagicPadres
I really hope Preller does not try to get the panda. Remember when he was trying to sign him last offseason? I don’t understand his interest in the guy.
And I agree with the Giants comment. Though I’ll say it’s worse when the Dodgers play at Petco because they take over about 3/4 of the stadium.
rmullig2
Funny how it is always the Boston media that come up with these rumors. Never a writer from the other city.
christian18cutshaw
bigpapi4ever are the Red Sox the best team in all of baseball
Psychguy
As a Halo fan it’s frustrating to start the year knowing your team has zero chance at a post season. Nice job Arte. Better job Mike.
ttr63
Long time Red Sox fan, first post. I have been reading the MLB posts on Trade Rumors for years. I have been a Red Sox fan for 38 years. This is one of those years where even I am having trouble getting excited about the team. Pitching–David Price is a good number one, a bit pricey, but one has to remember that these millions of dollars regular folks do not see are like Monopoly money, real to them and not to us. After that all I see are question marks, Buchholz can be good when healthy and motivated, Porcello is average at best and the Sox usually do not the his average, E. Rodriguez I like but is young, raw, and injured. Kelly is average and way up or way down. The depth is iffy at best. Owens has been called a great prospect but seems to get hammered. The bullpen could be good with Kimbrel, did not mind the trade for prospects due to the fact current value is at times better than future value, especially when they have depth at the positions traded. Injuries and lack of depth could be an issue. Offense–I do not count on Hanley at first be it hitting or fielding, Pedroia I like and I hope he bounces back but he is 30+. Bogaerts at short I do like. I hope he continues to become a star. Sandoval was and is a bust. The outfield is Mookie and a host of favorites. Bradley has moments, both good and bad, Castillo has provided us with mostly bad. The young catchers Swihart and Vazquez are talented and could be good. Big Papi has been great but unless they put it all together this year, he does not figure into the future. Maybe giving young players like Sam Travis, Travis Shaw, and the prospects is the way to go.
Overall, I am not very impressed. They could come together such as the ’86 team or the ’04 team but I will wait and see with one eye closed. I am a fan and have been here through bad and good and more bad. I am also a hard realist. Simply one man’s opinion.
Ivan Gomez
Panda and Swihart for Shields and low level prospect no money sent both sides
