In a lengthy Twitter dialogue with fans today, Braves GM John Coppolella discussed a variety of interesting topics rather forthrightly. There’s plenty to chew on here (all links on the chat are to Twitter):
- Starter Julio Teheran has drawn quite a bit of attention as a possible trade candidate; as I noted recently in ranking him amongst the 15 top trade candidates, the team could conceivably cut a deal in a market that could be short of quality rotation pieces. MLBTR has examined that matter from both sides recently (see here and here). But the GM didn’t seem to think that was a compelling concept. “I don’t see us trading Teheran at this point,” said Coppolella. “He’s almost into ’right-arm’ type status for us right now.”
- That last note was a reference to his now-famous comment about the unavailability of first baseman Freddie Freeman. It seems that other clubs have received the message loud and clear, as Coppolella says that he has not received any recent trade inquiries on the young slugger.
- The long-term catching situations remains a “big need” that the Braves will look at in free agency, says the Atlanta point-man. It certainly promises to be an interesting area to watch this winter, with players like Wilson Ramos, Matt Wieters, and Jason Castro among the soon-to-be free agents. (And if you’re curious: yes, the Braves would have interest in injured Cubs backstop Kyle Schwarber; but no, it’s not expected he’ll be available.)
- More generally, the team’s “primary objective” over the winter will be to improve upon a marginal offensive unit, he said. As he seeks to accomplish that, the organization expects to put its various financial improvements to work to “invest in the team,” he said. Atlanta “will have more money to spend this off season than in any of the 10 years I’ve been here,” per Coppolella. He also suggested that the Braves will be increasingly willing to deal prospects for controllable, MLB-level players.
- Big offensive numbers had been the hope when Atlanta acquired Hector Olivera last summer. Instead, that deal has long been a source of frustration for Braves fans, and Coppolella says he agrees with the concern. It was a “bad trade for us and one that I wish we had back,” he said, adding that “all we can do is learn from it and move forward.”
- If you’re looking for specific possibilities to find a big bat, it appears there’s at least one name on the wish list and another that can be crossed off. Coppolella says he has contacted Padres GM A.J. Preller “multiple times” to inquire about slugger Wil Myers, though obviously nothing has come to fruition as of yet. He is apparently less intrigued by veteran Cuban star Yulieski Gurriel, however, as the club does not intend to pursue him.
- For a bit of intrigue, Coppolella suggested that there is plenty of trade chatter going on. He says that he spoke with a dozen general managers from rival clubs yesterday and even hinted that there’s a possible trade in the works as we speak (though he noted it certainly may not come to fruition).

Teheran gives up 32% more home runs pitching away than he does pitching at home.
bravesfan 7
Yet he has a 2.10 era and .66 whip on the road
bravesfan 7
And idk where you got that stat but he gives up 7.6% more homers on the road
Ken M.
He has given up 38 home runs at Turner field and 50 on the road. 12 is 32% of 38.
chieftoto
12 more home runs on the road isn’t that big of a difference, calm down.
whyhayzee
I think he’s given up 24% less home runs at Turner Field than on the road. Also, I think he’s given up almost 14% less home runs at Turner Field than the average number of home runs at home or on the road. And maybe he just gives up more on the road because the ball just keeps rolling.

David 29
He’s given up 6 at home and 7 on the road, but has pitched 5 more innings on the road….
NL_East_Rivalry
Doesn’t matter. They think they can compete so he won’t be traded
steelerbravenation
Keep Julio & Vizcaino. Sign Wieters and trade for Ervin Santana ( Twins eating salary) & Plouffe in the off season. Also look for a RH power bat for the OF. I don’t know who would be a possibility. I don’t know if I would like Trumbo or not. Maybe a Blair, Ruiz & a prospect like Toki would entice the Padres into moving Wil Myers.
Brixton
They gave up Joe Ross, Trea Turner and Rene Rivera for Myers. It’ll cost more than that for Myers, in my opinion.
Ken M.
I read today that Didi Gregorious is a better overall player than Myers and worth more.
GeauxRangers
I think Wil Myers is the #1 1B in the NL in WAR
Brixton
Whoever said that shouldn’t be a baseball writer

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. No. No. That package will not get Wil Myers. Not even close.
WAH1447
Braves are going to have to give up Blair toki Austin Riley and then another top prospect to get close to acquiring Wil Meyers. Albies would probably have to go
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
It would have to include one or both of Swanson and Albies
bravosfan4life
IMO Allbies n Swanson are untouchable they r our future 2nd base n ss combo ain’t no way they getting traded
bbritton209
Maybe I am biased since I am a Braves fan but giving up 4 players for Wil Myers is a massive overpay. I know trades aren’t always about fair value and typically one team will get a better deal to some degree or another, but giving up Albies/Swanson, Blair, Touki, and Riley… Is insane. Myers is good but he isn’t THAT good.
Myers wouldn’t get you Albies or Swanson. It makes no sense from the Braves perspective. We make a huge hole in our (future) middle infield just to plug another hole? That’s robbing from Peter to pay Paul. Not smart.
steelerbravenation
I don’t think his proposal was serious.
aronmw
Will myers is a free agent at season end. We are 25 games under 500.
GeauxRangers
I don’t think Myers is even arbitration eligible until next season
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Alrighty then. No deal! You aren’t getting an All Star 1st baseman with 3 years of control remaining without throwing in at least one blue-chip prospect.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
No he is not!!!!!!!!! He’s a free agent after the 2019 season.
Frank Richard
If I recall you also thought there was no way that the white sox got Shields without giving up either Fulmer or Anderson and obviously they did. While the Padres still got the better end of the deal in hindsight you were clearly overvaluing your player and the trade market.
David 29
No it wouldn’t.. lmfao
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Wil Myers cost one elite prospect and one good prospect that became a great pitcher upon making it to the Majors. Why would he cost less now with that wrist injury behind him?
Frank Richard
The Rays sold high on the former ROY. He isn’t a great defensive outfielder although he is better in the corners, and he isn’t playing first with Freeman already there. Don’t over value what you have. Also don’t compare it to what he was last traded for because now there is also 2 years less control and his value isn’t quite as high. He will be worth what the market says and Wil Myers isn’t worth 2 top 100 prospects and a major league pitcher.
cam32
Damn that sounds like a good idea
vtncsc
I think they’ll go after Joey Bats, and overpay by a wide margin for him.
Brixton
That’s a horrible idea for the Braves. You’d be getting the backend of his decline years right as they’re preparing to/actively contending
RunDMC
Trust me, they’re not going anywhere near Joey Bats. He’s not their type of player other than being a gamer. Does not hit for AVG, strikes out more than they’d like and drastically overpaying for someone in their decline, changing leagues and coming away from a home park that can be a launching pad.
razorback
Lol everybodys on board with hating on a really good pitcher. It just seems weird lol
razorback
I think coppy is “playing the field” when teheran’s name is mentioned. I think every other team and fans are scared of another miller haul and its making everybody aggravated lol. Teheran has been terrific this year no doubt, right? And will if traded brings in another
nasty miller type haul. like it or not.
jrowe1979
With the signing of Pacheco, I wonder if that trade Coppy is referring to is for Flowers?
steelerbravenation
Hope not he reminds me of David Ross I wouldn’t mind him being the back up for a long time. Julio’s personal catcher.
Trade A.J.’s bum self.
jrowe1979
Unfortunately no one wants AJ though I think he is helping with morale a lot
vtncsc
AJ is here for leadership and his somewhat ability. He’s not that bad, considering what was available. I’d assume they sign a FA (Weiters) this offseason and I’d like Flowers to be the backup, but obviously it’s not my control.
Not much of a point in making a change at Catcher right now, in 5th place.
Gogerty
Man I hope for $15M they do not sign Wieters.
Chris815
I hope this show every body that the only way any team are going to get Tehran and vizcaino or freeman, inciate teams are going to have to pay big. I still like my trade with Braves, Rockies , Indians, pirates it help all 4 teams and give Braves the right handed of power starting next year they need and give better prospects
Gogerty
Please tell us again….
steelerbravenation
Yeah I don’t think they match up for a Will Myers deal. Would probably have to involve Albies or Dansby and I am not interested in that. Depending on how Newcomb develops over the next couple months maybe he could be a centerpiece of a deal for Myers but yet again I don’t think I would be interested in that either. For me it would def have to be more of a quantity over quality deal for the Braves.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
And Preller should be more interested in quality over quantity. Players like Wil Myers don’t come cheap.
doorights
Braves need a “clubber” not another Freddie type hitter like Myers. Jay Bruce or Matt Kemp have the requisite power for Sun Trust (measured by average HR distance).
tbsmithca
The Braves need position players who add value to their team not defensive liabilities who happen to have the capability to hit the ball a long way.
christian18cutshaw
Don’t see why y’all think Myers is worth so much. Not even half way through the season yet and he’s already broke his career highs in games played. He’s too injury prone to get some of the returns you guys are talking about
Brixton
Hes a big bat. “injury prone” is a bit of a stretch. He broke his wrist one year because of a accident in the outfield and the other time he had tendinitis — in his wrist.
Hes a high end slugger who has advanced tools and can play 1B and all 3 outfield spots to some capacity. Plus he’s cheap and controllable.
bbritton209
I’m not going to say he is injury prone, but there is at least cause for concern. He is 25, very young still, and has 3 years of experience at the MLB level. And in those 3 years he has never played over 88 games. In fact if he finishes this year it will be the first full year he has had.
For Atlanta, he won’t play but a handful of games at 1B, and of those it would only be to give Freeman the occasional day off or if he is injured. So his being able to play 1B, to me at least, isn’t as big of a plus as it would be for other teams. Then again, I’m not a GM.
(NOTE: in my comment below I said 4 years. It should be 3. Can’t include the current year.)
GeauxRangers
He had surgery to remove a bone spur in is wrist over the offseason and that appears to have corrected the wrist problems he was having. And we think he is good because he has a pedigree as a top prospect and is leading NL 1B in WAR this season after showing flashes of brilliance before getting injured last season.
bravobravo
I agree with everything you said except he has the pedigree of a top prospect (which he does). Just because he was a top prospect 4 years ago doesn’t mean his value goes up. His days of being a top prospect are over. Casey kelly was a top prospect some years ago. Doesn’t mean his value goes up because he once was a top prospect. Mike Olt was once a Rangers top prospect. Does that mean his value goes up as well? No. Myers is good because of the production on the field this year while he has been healthy. He doesn’t get extra value for being the Royals top prospect years ago. That doesn’t make his value go up. The production does!
treday
@Jeff, funny enough, Coppy was reading the MLBTR story about the potential Red Sox-Braves trade in the picture the Braves Twitter handle posted for the Q&A. Take a look at the pic!
Jeff Todd
Yeah, we got a kick out of that.
bbritton209
I wouldn’t mind trading for Myers if the price were right. Any price that starts, or even includes, Albies or Swanson should be a no go instantly. They are the future middle infield. I could see us maybe including Newcomb but I’m hesitant about that because he is the most promising LHP we have, to my knowledge at least. I know we have others but most of those are several years behind him.
The fact that he is 25 (which is young) and in his 4th season in the big leagues and has never played over a full season worries me though. Admittedly I haven’t seen him play and only know of him through stats.
sdsuphilip
I have zero interest as a Padres fan if Newcomb an older SP prospect who can’t throw strikes is the lead prospect in the deal. He’s vastly overrated
David 29
1. Newcomb would instantly become your best prospect
and 2. Reactions of Padres fans of Newcomb:
not a Padres prospect: “Zero interest. Old and can’t throw strikes- overrated.”
Padres prospect: “Ace potential guys- he’s #1 pitcher in the minors.”
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
A Myers trade would absolutely include Albies or Swanson if not both!
sdsuphilip
Myers deal won’t happen this yer unless 1 of Swanson/Albies are involved, and I put the odds of that at 10% (being optimistic) or lower.
For both clubs a deal in off-season where draftees are tradable makes more sense. That being said I still don’t think it would happen without either of those, it’s possible padres love allard and take a package of him+Ian Anderson plus but hard to see with how far away both are and neither considered elite guys right now.
David 29
But you know, Preller loves Coppy and Hart and loves to give us cheap deals.
If you think you can get Swanson/Albies or even Allard/Anderson, lol…
you guys can keep Myers and experience the “best 1B in the NL” on the DL.
sdsuphilip
Sorry, but I’m very happy for how the Kimbrel trade has been played out, Padres got significantly more value for him than Braves and Upton has become a solid starting OF that is slightly overpaid.
And I’m sorry that you and braves fans that support a racist franchise are so delusional into thinking you can get any good position player without giving up anything of value. You are going to be very mistaken. If the Braves won’t trade any of their top prospects they better be ready to give up a bunch of 150+ million dollar deals in FA, Braves have huge needs everywhere except 1B/2B/SS.
Much rather keep Myers and one of the thirty best position players in baseball than trade him for all your overrated pitching prospects that can’t throw strikes (see Newcomb/Touki/Sims).
mdrahz
Love that it goes to “support a racist franchise” argument when talking about hypothetical trades. Look, yes, I DID PERSONALLY create that mascot and chant, but the rest of the guys on this board don’t deserve the blame for that, okay?
“I DON’T LIKE YOUR TRADE PROPOSAL YOUR TEAM IS RACIST”
neat.
bravesfan1234
Touki is currently tearing it up and is considered by many to have the stuff of a potential number 1 starter. And Newcomb would be your number 1 prospect if added to your laughable farm system. Good grief I don’t even get all this talk about Myers in the first place. He’s had one good half in like 3 years. And just because San Diego made a stupid trade to acquire him doesn’t mean others will. I wouldn’t trade Albies or Swanson for an injury prone player straight up.
TheHittingGuy
Will Middlebrooks hottest 3B in the world AAA Brewers. No BRAINER.
steelerbravenation
I love how Myers value goes up because he was a top prospect at one time but when these guys talk about Julio Teheran his value is garbage because he doesn’t throw the ball 95 mph every pitch anymore. Julio was a top 3 prospect a couple years ago and literally has only had a half of a season that was terrible. The stat geeks make me laugh.
sdsuphilip
Myers value is not up cause he was a top prospect at one time, his value is up because he’s been one of the best players so far this year in baseball as a 25 year old.
Teheran is good but his value is (or at least should be) significantly less.
Teheran has a 3.84 FIP and it isn’t like he is suppressing exit velocity, of pitchers given up 150 BIP he is 94th in exit velocity allowed (out of 127, at 90 MPH). Maybe he is a bit better than his FIP but no one earns a 206 pitching BABIP and especially for teheran it looks extremely misleading.
He is a good middle rotation starter, but not a top of rotation guy.
mdrahz
Literally the second best WHIP in the majors but yeah you’re right. Myers is Mickey Mantle and Teheran sucks. With all these great players I can’t figure out why SD isn’t in the World Series…
And before you say “SMALL SAMPLE SIZE that’s just this year he has such a good whip”
1) Not really and
2) sort of cuts the same way with Myers stats/WAR/injuries
cjh815
Hate to inform all you in last start tehran throw a fastball in 5 ing at 97 so he staid around 94 to 95 when he throw 1hitter shutout. With 8 so and 0 walks . Also you also don’t realize he has better career era and so/walk ratio in his career the sonny gray .
