The Nationals will call up top position-player prospect Trea Turner, as the Talk Nats blog first reported on Twitter. He’ll join the club tomorrow, per MLB.com’s Bill Ladson (via Twitter), likely taking the active roster spot of first baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who is going on paternity leave.
Given that Zimmerman will only miss a few days, it’s not yet clear how long Turner will be up. It could be that he’ll just fill in temporarily at second base, with Daniel Murphy shifting to first, as MLB.com’s Jamal Collier suggests on Twitter.
But it’s certainly possible that this represents the beginning of Turner’s first full trial in D.C., which could have important repercussions for this season and the future. The Nats have relied on a combination of Danny Espinosa and Stephen Drew at shortstop. While that makes for a solid defensive pairing, the two have combined for an ugly .194/.281/.347 batting line on the year.
Turner, meanwhile, has improved upon the already-strong results he posted in his first attempt at Triple-A in 2015. He only managed nine hits in 44 plate appearances at the big league level in his brief call-up last year, but has put to rest any questions as to whether he’s due for another chance. Over 222 plate appearances at Syracuse in 2016, Turner owns a .310/.376/.472 batting line with three home runs and 17 steals.
The division-leading Nats aren’t exactly in need of a boost, as the club is off to a promising 33-and-21 start. But going to Turner now would allow the organization to get a firm idea of its middle infield mix in advance of the summer trade deadline. Were it not for the presence of Turner, the Nationals could well be considered a plausible buyer at the shortstop position over the next two months.
It’s important to note, too, that service time is no longer a compelling consideration for the team. After entering the season with 45 days on his ledger, Turner will not be able to tally a full season even if he remains active the rest of the way. That means that Washington can deploy him in the majors for all of this season while still controlling him through the 2022 campaign.
Turner came to D.C. along with Joe Ross in the three-team deal that sent Wil Myers to the Padres from the Rays, who in turn picked up Steven Souza from the Nats (among other players changing hands). With Ross providing strong contributions at the game’s highest level in his age-22 and 23 seasons, the deal already looks good from Washington’s perspective. If Turner successfully transitions to the majors, it could prove to be a coup.

Can’t wait to watch Dusty to never play him over Espinosa!

Fire dusty? Are you delusional or not a nats fan or what?
dstuart
He’s just an idiot so let him be stupid. He doesn’t have anything else.

Maybe Drew gets Traded to Angels,
Halo27
Wonder what it would take to pull that off. Angels don’t have much in the farm system.
jvjc1233
Wouldn’t need a lot for Espinsosa
chesteraarthur
8 cases of seeds (bbq, none of that plain shyt), 2 12s of beergarten tart, and a log of skoal citrus.

Drew blows!!!
davidcoonce74
Ah, I know the Padres, on their way to 90+ losses, love their always-injured defensively challenged first-base only Myers, but us fans can imagine a team with Turner and Joe Ross still around, right? #firetherockstarGM
theo2016
But matt kemp!
TheCanoShow
I honestly won’t to know why is he still the gm, first he traded there entire farm, then chose not to at least get some prospects back at the deadline and now is stuck with a team full of “embarrassments”.

Never understood why this trade was never viewed as negatively as the Dbacks/Braves deal. Turner has always been a higher ceiling guy than Swanson, Ross is much better than Blair, the Only difference really is Inciarte who I believe is a 4th OF at best, instead the Nationals gave up the Inciarte in the deal to the 3rd team. All for a guy in Myers who had something like a career .320 OBP at the time of the deal and has never played in more than 100 games in a season.
chesteraarthur
Because they weren’t that highly regarded when they were actually agreed upon.
Ceiling is one thing. Swanson has a floor of pretty much a regular MLB MIF. That’s incredibly valuable. And despite your thoughts, Inciarte has shown to be better than a 4th of (at this point).
Niekro
I have to disagree hes a career below average OPS+ guy all his value is in his defense and it is not like he is Kiermaier level defense who is also a better hitter than Inciarte too. Maybe if Inciarte steals more bases I could see him being worthy of being in the lineup everyday but he simply doesn’t. His real value is being a versatile 4th OF who can play + defense at all spots and platoon with a righty who can hit lefties. AKA what he was in Arizona.
chesteraarthur
You don’t need to be Keirmaier to be a valuable defensive player? Especially not when you are a + in cf
chieftoto
Swanson was drafted 1/1. Don’t really care for the Braves, but if you ever say turner has a higher ceiling than Swanson again, imma lose my crap. Blair=Ross. Blair has had growing pains and has only made like 7 major league starts. Give him some time.
theo2016
Nah Ross is better. He always had a great fastball but his slider really took off, it’s been 20 runs above average since his debut.
chieftoto
Right now Ross is better but give Blair time. He’s not ranked in the top 50 of MLB prospects for nothing
theo2016
He is fine, but ross slider came out of nowhere to be an almost elite pitch. Blair is like mid rotation arm ceiling, Ross is basically a number 2 already.
jleve618
You know there’s only one guy who went 1-1 in the HoF right? Doesn’t make you an automatic legend.
theo2016
Because inciarte was just as valuable as Miller alone, and proven it in majors 8.9bwar 6.1 fwar. Myers was just traded for prospects, turner kind of has a low floor, Ross wasnt as highly regarded. His slider really got better post trade. But they gave up almost nothing off the mlb team. They also got back a couple interesting minor league arms. Myers still has a crazy ceiling, just been hurt too much for proper development but their is 30 hr power in his bat.
Niekro
WAR is a terrible evaluation when most of the WAR is defensive, he was still below average offensively even with the benefits of an abnormally high BABIP from playing home games in Arizona. Ender Inciarte is not more valuable than Adam Jones, no matter what WAR says.
chesteraarthur
Why is it terrible when it’s defensive? Cuz you don’t trust it, or cuz you dont trust uzr? drs
Niekro
It is not weighted correctly especially in today’s game where strikeouts walks and home runs are king. Offense and Pitching are more valuable than Defense. If this was the 80’s I want Inciarte and Simmons on my team.
theo2016
You realize it’s only calculated on the plays he makes? So none of what u said applies. He was an average hitter, above average baserunner and elite defensively. Simmons isn’t a good comp because he was a terruble hitter, below average baserunner and elite defensively, he also had 53 mil in garuntee money where inciarte might make 20 over his arb years.
tecjug
How are strikeouts, walks, and home runs king in today’s game? The Royals just made the World Series two years in a row with the fewest walks and home runs in the league. They won with defense, baserunning, and great relief pitching.
Niekro
One team is an exception not the rule
Niekro
You realize Ozzie Smith had like 200 more chances a season than Simmons yet never managed a 5 dwar season? He is not any better than Simmons as a hitter Simmons would have put up the exact same numbers playing in Arizona.
theo2016
Ozzie Smith did have a 4 win defensive season, also why choose someone who retired before the defensive stats existed, its much more an approximation with those guys. And lol if you think Simmons is the same hitter, both wRC+ and ops+ are already park adjusted!
Niekro
83 OPS+ vs 91 OPS+ one is considered the best defensive player in baseball the other is not. Inciarte is going to have to improve vastly in one of the areas to be considered more valuable than Simmons. Simmons has a larger sample size, if Inciarte continues at his rate his OPS+ will be below Simmons in a hurry. 4 does not = 5.
chieftoto
Niekro im gonna pretend I didn’t just hear that
