The Pirates have designated infielder Cole Figueroa and righty Jorge Rondon for assignment, the club announced. They lost their roster spots to make way for infielder/outfielder Adam Frazier and righty Juan Nicasio.

Figueroa, 28, saw limited action in Pittsburgh this year and has still yet to crack the century mark in major league plate appearances. But he’s a versatile fielder who owns a .288/.356/.376 batting line in 1,777 plate appearances at the Triple-A level.
Rondon, who is also 28, has seen just 19 frames at the major league level over the past three seasons. The results have been less than stellar in that minuscule sample, but he too has had his successes in the upper minors. Across 238 2/3 Triple-A innings, Rondon owns a 2.72 ERA with 7.1 K/9 against 3.7 BB/9.

Nicasio was still on the 40 man roster even though he was on the restricted list, wasn’t he? If so, the Bucs would only have needed to designate 1 player for assignment, not 2. Makes me think there is another roster move forthcoming.
Rumor has it Chad Kuhl coming up Sunday to start in Nacasio’s old spot
Kuhl was with the team stretching before the game Friday at PNC Park so he’s already in Pittsburgh and it would be surprising if he doesn’t start Sunday. My guess is it’s just a spot start, or if necessary, two until Gerrit Cole is ready to come off the DL. Tough first day in the bigs for him though, national TV Sunday night game against Kershaw…
Invasion in restricted list does not count against the 40 man roster. When he was activated, he did count against the 40 man.
