Padres Reportedly Trying To Trade Cashner Before Tomorrow’s Start

By Steve Adams | July 20, 2016 at 10:27pm CDT

10:27pm: FOX’s Ken Rosenthal tweets that the Padres are still expecting Cashner to make his start for the team tomorrow night. One source tells Rosenthal there’s a 99 percent chance that nothing will be completed prior to tomorrow night’s outing.

7:34pm: The Padres are widely expected to move right-hander Andrew Cashner before the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline, and according to a pair of reports from Jon Morosi of FOX Sports and MLB.com (Twitter link) and Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Cashner may have already made his final start with San Diego. Cashner is slated to pitch for the Friars tomorrow night, but both reporters indicate that there’s a possibility that the righty could be moved before that outing takes place. Morosi cites rival executives that believe San Diego GM A.J. Preller may want to move Cashner before he takes the hill.

Morosi lists the Orioles and Marlins as two teams that have spoken to the Padres about Cashner. The Rangers, too, have been linked to Cashner, and SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo tweets that the talks between the two sides are ongoing but Texas wouldn’t be considered a favorite for him if a deal does indeed come together before tomorrow. The Royals have also been linked to Cashner this summer, though not in the past couple of weeks.

Cashner is coming off his strongest start of the season, which Lin notes may be a factor in the Padres’ urgency to deal him. The 29-year-old Cashner rattled off six innings of one-run ball and held the visiting Giants to four hits and no walks while striking out nine. That strong outing notwithstanding, Cashner is currently toting a disappointing 5.05 ERA. He’s seen his K/9 rate (7.1) and BB/9 rate (3.6) trend in the wrong direction this season and also been significantly more prone to the long ball, as his 1.5 HR/9 rate and 15.7 percent homer-to-flyball ratio are among the worst rates of his career. He’s also been limited to just 67 2/3 innings due to a hamstring strain and a neck strain.

In spite of those red flags, there’s plenty to like about Cashner. He’s a former high draft pick and top prospect that pitched to a combined 3.43 ERA in 483 innings from 2013-15 and is earning a reasonable $7.15MM this year in his final season before free agency. He’s still owed about $2.89MM of that salary through season’s end. Cashner’s velocity is down a bit in 2016, but his average fastball is still sitting at 93.6 mph, and his 47.1 percent ground-ball rate is largely unchanged from the past two seasons.

A friend who lives outside DC said that a Padres scout was at a Frederick Keys game and seemed to be most interested in their closer. I don’t even remember the kids name, just that he throws in high 90s. That seems like a good fit for Padres. Hard throwing kid about 3 years away.

How about packaging him with kemp, agreeing to pay half of Kemp’s remaining salary and asking for a weak, low-level prospect in return? The O’s get pitching help without having to give up prospects they don’t have and the Padres get rid of part of Kemp’s salary. Kemp can get some DH at bats and fill in for Kim while he’s hurt.

Not sure why the Os would want kemp, they already Trumbo who’s limited defensively and one of them would have to play the outfield

They wouldn’t want him. But that would be the price to get cashner in this scenario. Instead of giving up prospects, they take on part of a bad contract. And I think trumbo is a free agent after this year so kemp could slide into his role next year.

They’re trying to trade him, he has injury concerns, and hes just been terrible for two seasons now in a pitchers park.

If they can get a decent B level prospect and have someone take his salary, he’ll be moved. No incentive to keep him unless you want to gamble (and lose that gamble) on a QO.

I wouldn’t be so sure that Cashner would refuse a QO. The pitching market this offseason is razor thin and we’ve seen how much teams will overpay for decent pitching.

I’m not sure he would refuse it. He would probably accept it. The “decent pitching” you are referring to didn’t come with the injury concerns that Cashner does. Outside 300 IP in 2013-2014, he hasn’t been good and is almost never healthy.

I really hope the O’s don’t give up the only talented pitcher in their organization who isn’t injured for 2 months of a pitcher with an ERA over 5. I want them to get a pitcher but he should cost them next to nothing. But if the past few years are any indication (Zach Davies and Eduardo Rodriguez both being dealt for rentals) they will probably overpay.

It will be closer to $17 million for the QO this offseason and Cashner is in line for a $30-40 million deal in FA which is alot more than $17 million.

You are right about that. If we are unable to pull the trigger on a trade Preller will give him the QO just because the FA pitching market is so thin this offseason. Even with the troubles Cashner has had, he will get a 3-4 year deal for more than $10 per year in this market.

Not saying the Padres will get Gallo for Norris and Cashner, but please be realistic about what Gallo is. He is a guy with huge power potential, but is hitting .247 in AA with 84 SO in 223 AB. In his cup of coffee with the Rangers last year he hit .204 with 57 SO in 108 AB. Rob Deer or Dave Kingman redux is what he is looking like more and more. That is probably why the Rangers are now saying he is available for the right trade. The biggest question is this, if trading Gallo for Cashner and Norris gave the Rangers enough to put them in the playoffs, would it be worth it. Most teams would say yes.

You seem to ignore the Rangers pressing need for 1B in the coming years.

Gallo is the logical choice to man 1st with Mooreland a free a free agent and his power plays well in arlington.

No team is going to get Gallo unless they can A. provide the rangers with an alternative to that situation or offer them something elsewhere or B. Offer them enough to forgo that avenue.

Although i do find the “gallo isnt that great but would love to have him on my team while not giving up adequate pieces” somehow funny.

Anderson Espinoza and Luis Perdomo for Ian Desmond and Hanser Alberto. Padres are hurting for SS so use desmond there.

Espinoza isnt that good he cant master a ball.

No way do the Padres give up 23 and 18 year old pitchers for a shortstop turned CF who won’t be part of a contending team. Makes zero sense

And as for Espinoza not mastering A ball, he’s 18. Nearly three years younger than league average. Scouts aren’t making comps to Pedro for no reason

        • YourDaddy

I don’t see a fit for Gallo on the Padres. We have a great 1B who is under team control for 4 more years and Gallo doesn’t play 3B well enough to stick there. The Padres need 2B, SS and pitching prospects.

Espinoza is a top 15 prospect in the game who throws 95++ has 3 plus pitches. That he isn’t dominating at low A ball at 18 years old is not an indication of his value as a prospect. He won’t be traded anytime soon.

If the Padres make a trade with the Rangers it will be Cashner alone or Cashner and Norris. It will not include young, controllable arms.

Maybe a package of prospects like Brett Martin, Travis Demeritte and a guy like Pedro Payano or Jonathan Hernandez for both Cashner and Norris.

Espinoza is 18, 2.5 years younger than the average low-A player in his league. Don’t scout the stat line. Scout the stuff, which is terrific. He might break, sure, but he could also be a star.

Desmond is having a tremendous season for a pennant-contending team. No way Texas would trade him, and he will be a FA in a few months, which means San Diego wouldn’t possibly trade for him.

TX could use a DH in kemp if Fielder is going to be out and Norris could fill that need behind the plate and Cashner could be a bottom of the rotation rental. He is a Texan and a change of sceanery could help him rebound.

Kemp could go to the Rangers if the Padres ate a good amount of his contract since they are one of the few contending teams in need of a DH/Corner outfielder however, I’m not completely convinced they’ve given up on Fielder. Also if the Padres were to get Profar they would probably need to include like Solarte at the very least in that deal.
