Mets The Favorites For Jay Bruce

By Steve Adams | August 1, 2016 at 9:17am CDT

The non-waiver trade deadline is just under nine hours away, and rumors/transactions figure to be flying around quickly today. Reds outfielder Jay Bruce remains one of the likeliest candidates to be dealt between now and the 4pm ET deadline. As of Sunday, the Giants were said to be making a “strong push” for Bruce, who is also said to be a prime target of the Mets. Bruce has also drawn interest from the Indians, Dodgers and Rangers, among others, over the past few days, and the Rays have at times been mentioned as a possible factor in three-team trade scenarios involving Bruce.

We’ll keep track of all the day’s Bruce rumors here in this post…

  • Morosi now tweets that the Mets and Reds have made progress on a deal involving Bruce.
  • Yahoo’s Jeff Passan tweets that the Mets are the favorites to land Bruce, but the Rangers and Giants are still in. Talks could stretch into the afternoon, he notes.

Earlier Updates

  • Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports/MLB.com tweets that the Mets remain in active talks with the Reds as of Monday morning. ESPN’s Jayson Stark also tweets that conversations with the Mets remain active, while talks with the Giants and Dodgers are currently in “slow mo.”
  • Heyman tweets that the Mets don’t seem to have heard anything on Bruce this morning (Twitter link). He also tweets that the Giants haven’t heard anything about Bruce being dealt this morning.
  • USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets that the Reds have “found a match” for a Bruce trade and expects Cincinnati to trade Bruce to a National League club this morning. That team is not the Dodgers, according to Nightengale. The Giants and Mets are the two non-Dodgers NL clubs that have been most heavily linked to Bruce in the past day or two.
  • Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports tweets the Giants, Mets, Indians and others have been in on Bruce recently. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, meanwhile, lists the Giants, Dodgers, Mets, Rangers and Blue Jays all as teams that still have some interest in Bruce as of Monday morning.

Not helping you this year though. I don’t think the Sox need Bruce, but the kid isn’t ready to come up.

Highly doubtful. Even if he does get called up he wouldn’t have even close to the impact Bruce would. Keep in mind he’s just a rental.

That’s what I’ve been saying. With David gone next year he would be perfect for them.

One year contract though. They could get him in free agency and I feel like he would do so well in the short right field area

Mets fan here. Mets have a glut of corner outfielders and need a center fielder. Bruce is a nice addition but unless he replaces Granderson and Conforto is demoted, he has to play center, which won’t happen. Are the Mets moving Conforto? Is Granderson playing center field (Please NO!) Can’t the Mets get a center fielder?
Forget the outfield logjam for a minute. Can the Mets get a 3B? Flores can play short for now.

The Reds just drafted Nick Senzel for the future at 3B. He’s already raking in A ball, and might even start next year in AA and go to the AFL this year. Phil Bickford, Lucius Fox, and Steven Duggar is who I’d target.

Mets or Giants. I am doubting the Dodgers because they would need to find a match for Puig and I think are more focused on adding a starter possibly Sale or Hill.

Both the Mets and Giants have the peices to give.

Cecchini > Arroyo imo. Cecchini can stick st SS, has similar power, and much better plate discipline. If the Reds could get Cecchini and Nimmo, I’d be happy. Maybe a third lottery ticket piece.

Amen. Cecchini and Nimmo would be a great pair for the Reds to acquire. Both are versatile OBP-centric players who can fit into the unknown circumstances of the Reds.

Cecchini can probably handle SS, 2b, or 3b… while Arroyo sounds like a 3b/OF. While Nimmo can handle any of the three OF spots.

I agree that Cecchini and Nimmo would make a lot of sense. Seems like a reasonable ask and OBP is a problem for the reds. Both are MLB ready, which will help make the departure of bruce more palatable for the fans.

I am a huge Bruce fan and hate to see him go, but it doesn’t make much sense for the Reds to keep him. They won’t be competitive next year when his contract is up and Bruce doesn’t have the skill set to keep providing a ton of WAR in his decline years, so they’d just be hamstringing their future team salary by signing him to a big age 31-36 contract (see Brandon Phillips).

I hope he gets a ring, the guy is a consummate professional and a great baseball citizen.

How exactly are they crazy? Is Bruce the magical piece that is going to make the Reds a playoff contender next year? I don’t even think Trout could make this team a playoff contender next year. They have to get some value out of Bruce on the trade market and move forward. The timing of a move can be debated, but the fact that he needs to be moved really shouldn’t be, unless the market is truly that horrendous.

What’s crazy about trading a guy that’s been pretty inconsistent for the past two years and only has a year and a half left of control? Plus his value right now is the highest it’ll probably ever be again so why not get something out of him before he walks after next year?

Isn’t that exactly why they should trade him? They’re going be in last anyway, they should sell high and get some future prospects.

I’m somewhat surprised there hasn’t been more reports linking Jay Bruce’s former Reds teammate Todd Frazier to the Mets. After all, the Mets could use a third baseman and Frazier would have the same amount of team control available as Bruce without having to pick up a club option for next season.

Frazier will be arbitration eligible in 2017 after his current team-friendly contract extension expires following this season. Frazier would seem to be imminently available with the White Sox being in a sell mode as the 3 pm (CT) August 1st non-waiver trade deadline approaches.

I think the feeling is that they feel Flores will be good enough to be a everyday player. Remember Flores is still very young only 24 but turning 25 so he still has the potential to have a breakout season. My guess is that the Bruce goes to the Mets as a insurance policy if they can’t keep Cespedes after this season and at the same time it will allow them to continue to fight for a WC spot.

Reports were showing that the Reds were interested with Kevin Plawecki. With the Mets starting depth issues I think that they will be trading Dilson Herrera over Wheeler so it may look like

      Herrera+Plawecki+Nimmo for Bruce.

So if he does go to the Mets, who are “favorites” at the time of me writing this, where exactly does he fit this year?

Cespedes is playing injured, and it’s to the point that he can hardly play LF, so forget about CF. Maybe the DL him but what happens if/when he comes back? CF, where he said he doesn’t want to play? And Grandy probably won’t be moved to center, right?

I guess this makes sense for 2017 though, when Cespedes likely leaves. But then where does Conforto fit in, are they giving up on him?

CF has been a of a defensive black hole any game Lagares hasn’t started anyway right? I’m gonna assume they keep running Cespedes out there.

Conforto gets the 4th OF/RH PH spot.

The idea of a Bruce/Cespedes/Grandy OF looks less than ideal defensively…

      • metstruth

Actually the Mets have talked about moving Conforto to center and having Cespedes go back to left field. So my feeling is that if this trade gets done Granderson will platoon with Conforto in center. Terry has numerous times expressed that he would rather go with the veteran when they are in contention because he feels that the veteran gives them the best chance to win(Dusty like?) So im guessing granderson will get the majority of the starts.
