Diamondbacks GM: “Not Moving” Shelby Miller

By Tim Dierkes | August 1, 2016 at 11:31am CDT

Asked by Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports about Shelby Miller, Diamondbacks GM Dave Stewart responded, “We’re not moving him.”  The righty was reportedly available as of last week. A few days ago, Stewart told Nick Piecoro of AZCentral.com, “We’ve had a ton of (interest).  My story to them is the same: We haven’t given up on the young man.”

Miller, 25, was a key offseason addition for Arizona.  The D’Backs acquired him from the Braves in December for a robust package of Dansby Swanson, Aaron Blair, and Ender Inciarte.  Miller endured a finger strain in April and an accompanying May DL stint, and never got on track this season.  He was optioned to Triple-A in mid-July, after posting a disastrous 7.14 ERA, 6.5 K/9, 4.4 BB/9, 1.69 HR/9, and 42.8% groundball rate in 69 1/3 big league innings.  Miller is under team control through at least 2018 as an arbitration eligible player.

Trebek: “This circus of a franchise has been making bizarre moves as far back as 2010, with players including Justin Upton, Adam Eaton, and Dansby Swanson.”

Of course you’re not moving him. You got 30 offers and all revolved around an autograph ball from a former player of said team/s

Not moving him because it’ll cost someone their job to admit they completely blew that trade just 2/3 into the first season after it. Nowhere for his value to really go but up after this year.

Sometimes Dave Stewart sounds like a management-side Boras.

Trading Miller would have been embarrassing.

Even if Miller recovers back to form (which I think is likely given his age), this still has the potential of being of one the worst trades in this era. Inciarte is still going to be worth 2.5 WAR this year or so despite the early struggles. Blair has been downright terrible so far so he could be a bust. Swanson is progressing well through the minors and has the potential to be a solid middle infielder. If the D-Backs move Miller at this point, they would have lost not only the three they sent to the Braves, but also what they thought was the 2 in a 1-2 punch at the top of their rotation.

It’s amazing how much worse this trade looks now than on the day it was made, since it looked so awful back then then.
