Red Sox, White Sox Building Momentum Toward Chris Sale Trade

By Steve Adams | December 6, 2016 at 11:51am CDT

The Red Sox have “built momentum” toward a deal to acquire ace Chris Sale from the White Sox, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). Rosenthal had just tweeted that Boston was still “strongly” in the mix for Sale prior to the newer report. Rosenthal further tweets that the Nationals aren’t totally out on Sale, but the Red Sox have become a stronger possibility.

That seemingly signifies that something has changed since last night, when Rosenthal reported that the Nationals had a “legitimate chance” at finalizing a Sale deal. Indeed, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe tweets that he’s been hearing since the middle of the night that Boston may be upping its aggression in order to get a Sale trade across the line.

FanRag’s Jon Heyman tweets that Chicago asked Boston for Andrew Benintendi, but Boston strongly prefers to keep him. Chicago does like Jackie Bradley as well as a number of other young Boston pieces, though Bradley comes with four years of club control as opposed to Benintendi’s six.

Just because he is a player on your team’s rival doesn’t magically make him a lot worse than he is. His consistency is still an issue, but he’s been a VERY good player for the past year and a half, and always had a high pedigree.

none of those names will be traded, turner the least of which i think. As for swanson, the braves are not an ace away from being legit world series contenders, so trading away 6 years of swanson for a couple of swanson doesnt make sense in their plans

Atlanta views Swanson as a franchise shortstop. They lucked into a player of his caliber once. No one traded those type of players.

It will have to be one of those 3 in my opinion . Sale is a stud that is dirt cheap for 3 years of control. Prospects are hit or miss and even if they have small sample size at MLB level can still tank

I agree…JBJ is highly overrated. And he’s 29. The White Sox are idiots if they bite on a deal built around that guy, but knowing Boston’s proclivity for bending over other teams in trades (see the one with LAD for AGon/Crawford however many years ago), something tells me they’ll find a way to bend over ChiSox.

I’d think any deal would have to include one of Benintendi/Moncada plus E-Rod and another A or B level prospect.

Folks shouldn’t overvalue their top prospects when you can get a 27 year old ace with three years of team control remaining at an incredibly low price (ahem Brian Cashman).

As long as he stays in the AL and doesn’t come to the NL I’m happy lol. If Price gets back to his old self because (let’s face it he wasn’t himself last year) then that could be a really good rotation.

As a Boston fan I think everyone knows how much this will pat and I’m not sure I want to do it at all. It sounds fun, but do we really want to give up multiple elite and potentially major league ready prospects for him? One trade for a guy who is questionable himself is not worth our whole farm.

As a baseball fan Sale is a very good pitcher and quality guy.. but right now for the Sox I don’t see us needing to trade great quality prospects for him. I think we need a solid #2-3 RH pitcher to mix into the rotation. Price, Erod, Pom, are all lefties. Just my opinion.

Moncada will not happen in a trade for Sale. Boston spent alot of money for Moncada would negate Sale’s low salary. Now with the Sale’s salary being negated by the sheer amount spent on Moncada. Sale loses value in the deal.

As a Yankees fan, I am rooting for this deal. Whatever the result, the drama that follows will cheer me up. We know Boston will have to give up something for Sale, but it will either be way too much or a steal, depending on the perspective of the commenter. Regardless, once out the door, every piece that goes to Chicago will instantly be a bum once he passes physical, and Sale’s value instantly elevated. And Boston doesn’t do much without a throw-in-piece, so that player, also, will have great value.
Boston doesn’t need Sale. And they have a great group of young talent. They are making this deal because they can,.and likely only selling off surplus. The months of “greatest team since the 1927 Yankees” will surely follow. Go BoSox.

Lots of smokescreens this time of year. For example, if the report that a Giolito and Robles for Sale base has been agreed to I’m sure we’d only be hearing about trying to finish that deal. On the other hand, one thinks if that is true, but Boston is indeed still in the mix then Moncada has to be very much on the table at this point. Ultimately, these things are fun but now isn’t the time to move Sale if they aren’t going to commit to rebuilding. Quintana with his 2 years of control left should be moved if I’m Chicago.
