Outrighted: Anthony Gose, Zach Neal, Jabari Blash

By Jeff Todd | January 25, 2017 at 5:56pm CDT

Here are the day’s minor moves:

  • The Tigers announced that center fielder Anthony Gose has been outrighted after clearing waivers, per a team announcement. He won’t have an opportunity to reject the assignment, as it’s his first time being outrighted and he hasn’t yet reached three years of major league service. Still just 26, Gose lost his role on the Tigers last year and struggled upon his demotion to the upper minors (in addition to being suspended after a dugout spat with then-Triple-A skipper Lloyd McClendon). He could yet play a role in Detroit’s outfield mix, but will surely need to earn his way back. In 1,252 plate appearances over parts of five seasons in the majors, Gose owns a .240/.309/.348 batting line with 57 steals.
  • Also outrighted following a DFA was Athletics righty Zach Neal. The 28-year-old appeared in the majors for the first time in 2016, posting a 4.24 ERA over 70 innings. Reflecting his long history as a low-strikeout, low-walk hurler, Neal retired just 27 opposing batters via strikes but also put only six on base via the free pass. Having cleared waivers, and lacking the ability to reject an assignment, he’ll provide the A’s with some upper-level pitching depth in 2017.
  • The same fate awaits outfielder Jabari Blash, who’ll stay with the Padres after clearing outright waivers. The 27-year-old didn’t produce at the MLB level and faced a tough path to playing time with numerous others deserving of opportunities in San Diego. But he has been awfully impressive at Triple-A over the last few years, posting a cumulative .246/.364/.550 slash with 45 long balls over 646 total plate appearances.

is there a clubhouse problem with gose or is he really just that bad?

He’s just out of minor league options and no team is willing to commit a 25-man roster spot to him.

The Tigers valued his defense when they traded for him. His defense was fairly average for the Tigers.

I didn’t know much about him before Gose became a Tiger. But, I thought that he was supposed to give the slow-running Tigers a chance to distract pitchers from focusing on the hitters.

He showed nothing offensively last year at 3 levels all the way down to AA. He strikes out a ton for someone with little power. His defense was shaky, not what the Tigers were expecting. He has limited base stealing ability for someone with his speed. But he is lefty, has tools, and may yet put it together.

Are lefty batters as valuable as lefty pitchers?

Had potential, but seems like he’s not very coachable. Has a great arm, takes bad routes and has bad plate discipline

figured he must’ve had issues like being uncoachable.

You think the tigers would stand in the way of him going there? Maybe you’re right.

It seems as if the no one else wants the Tiger’s problem players. Hope this kid gets his head right so his abilities can take over.

I would rather have him on the jays than Upton

not sure why a lot of the Jay fans are down on Upton. I think he is a real sleeper. Power , speed, decent defense, and the Tigers got him almost for free.

Melvin Upton is no sleeper, he’s only dosing off while playing the OF

Gose vs Upton is not exactly battle of the titans.

I’m not gunna look up stats, But I certainly feel in my gut Gose is not going to outperform Upton this year. Not on D or at the plate because hopefully he’s only mashing LHP while Gose is a LH hitter and stinks at the plate as of late even vs RHP

Pompey is the answer for the jays off season needs. Younger check
      Athletic check
      Fast as f**k check
      LH check
      Good D check

He’s just got to put together a decent stroke against righties, be a high OBP guy who can hit the gaps and not swing for the fences. Adding a good bunt will also help him and something Gose also sucked at in a jays uniform

Somewhat surprised Neal got through waivers.. Extreme control type that might have been worth a flyer by someone.

      Alas, no.

Anthony Gose- that’s one grizzled looking 26 year old. Maybe that’s why Lloyd McClendon didn’t like him: his face. Anyways, time will tell if this grizzled young man can finally make it back to the bigs and prove that Justin Upton is a poor man’s Anthony Gose.

I was hoping the Jays could get Gose back. I could see him playing great D in a corner OF spot if Pompey doesn’t work out.

Yes, Gose seems to have a rock for a brain, but he’s young and would be a good complement to Upton. Would love to see speed and D off the bench.

Ya, it’s too bad the Jays didn’t grab him when he was on waivers. He would have been a lot better platoon partner for Upton than Carrera..
