Mets Suspend Matt Harvey

By Connor Byrne | May 7, 2017 at 4:22pm CDT

4:22pm: It’s possible Harvey will file a grievance over the suspension, reports FanRag’s Jon Heyman. “This will end up in a grievance,” one source told Heyman. However, other sources Heyman spoke with indicated that Harvey’s unsure if he’ll contest the ban.

1:20pm: Harvey did not show up at Citi Field for the Mets’ game Saturday, per FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, with a source telling him that Harvey had a migraine. The source also cited a potential miscommunication issue between Harvey and the Mets, but the club “evidently saw it differently,” writes Rosenthal (Twitter links).

12:47pm: Harvey’s suspension is the result of “a compilation of issues” going back to last season, report Seth Walder and Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News. Prior to Saturday’s game, Mets owner Fred Wilpon and COO Jeff Wilpon engaged in a “heated” on-field conversation that was believed to be about Harvey, an industry source told Walder and Ackert.

9:40am: The Mets have suspended right-hander Matt Harvey three days without pay for a violation of club rules, reports Anthony DiComo of MLB.com (Twitter links here). The ban began Saturday and will run through Monday, meaning Harvey won’t make his scheduled start Sunday against the Marlins.

With Harvey temporarily unavailable, the Mets have selected the contract of Triple-A left-hander Adam Wilk, who will start against Miami. To create room for Wilk on the 40-man roster, the Mets have moved injured ace Noah Syndergaard from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day DL, which had been expected to happen.

The Mets are unwilling to reveal the reason for Harvey’s brief suspension, per DiComo, with manager Terry Collins saying, “We’ll keep it in-house, the way it’s supposed to be.”

Sunday’s development continues a less-than-ideal year-plus for Harvey, who hasn’t resembled his previous top-of-the-rotation form since the beginning of last season. Harvey logged a 4.86 ERA over 92 2/3 innings in 2016, and then underwent season-ending thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in July. In his return this season, the 28-year-old has continued to throw hard, yet his once-high strikeout rate has dropped to 5.14 per nine innings and he has posted a career-worst walk rate (3.34 per nine) over 35 frames. Thanks in part to his declining K/BB ratio and swinging-strike percentage (7.4, down from 11.7 from 2012-16), not to mention a sky-high home run-to-fly ball ratio (21.2 percent), Harvey’s ERA sits at a lofty 5.14 through six starts.

As of now, the only Mets starter who has gone through 2017 without any real issues is Jacob deGrom. Syndergaard, Steven Matz and Seth Lugo are all shelved with injuries, while Robert Gsellman and Zack Wheeler haven’t been as effective as they were previously (though it’s understandable in Wheeler’s case, as he’s returning from Tommy John surgery).

Rusty..you need some rustoleum so you get the particles out of your eyes. Mets management is following its historical form of ineptitude and drama. If it’s not one thing it’s another. The manager is a meee cheerleader and overplays injury prone players, the GM can’t enforce any sensible rules with the players and the owners are plain CHEAP.

I’m sorry for Harvey. He was probably insubordinate to the three ring circus, however since it is not in the public view at least he did it the right way.

This is something that the club could have handled a different way; afterall it did nothing with Noah when he notified them a few hours before a game that he couldn’t pitch,. Harvey had to suck it up for the team and pitch even though he had worked out heavily the day before.
Then Noah pulls a double wamo and rejects an MRI, pronounces himself fit and then doesn’t make it to the 2nd inning.
        What idiots!

Wrong. Mets told Sydnergaard to take an MRI multiple times and kept saying no he’s fine. After try 100 they said Fine, go ahead and pitch. And then that happened. Noah’s Pride took over and screwed him over.

Harvey is being paid over $5M for 2017, so even understanding that he pays union dues, agent fees, taxes, etc from that gross salary figure–his net income this year is still millions, just from his Mets contract.

So 3 days without pay is almost Kabuki, instead of discipline. Unless he’s financially incompetent, he won’t miss 3 days of pay. Apparently, the Mets had to do something, and this was deemed the appropriate penalty for whatever the infraction was.

Still, is feels like a mom giving a 35-year-old son a time out for something said or done. It is a feeble and anachronistic response to whatever the problem is.

Mets are a fun organization to watch,. I got interested after the Wilpons had to pay back the millions for the Madoff Ponzi scheme….Baseballwise, they are overpaying a lot of players. 80 Mill comes off the books this year. It will be interesting to see how they spend money next year. Gotta love their young pitching even though the injury bug has bitten them good. Matt Harvey won’t be with the Mets next year. Harvey used to be an elite #1 rotation alpha dog, now he is a very average #4. Injuries I guess. As far a Syndergaard goes, he shouldn’t be telling the Met’s docs what to do,. There is a serious problem in him or in the organization that needs resolving. What a mess.

Good luck with that evaluation; the Mets have very little motivation to dump him at his lowest value. Sure, he is causing some bad PR, but he still is young enough and has shown enough in previous seasons to hold onto as opposed to literally just give away.

Mets should refund every ticket holder for yesterday’s game a nominal $5 for BEING CHEAP and PLANNING POORLY. How can you have a journey man pitcher fly on the red eye overnight and then pitch.

      They are pathetic.

The Royals broke him in the World Series and he’s never been the same.

Harvey to Cubs for Baez….may have to tweak the trade with minor leaguers but I can see it happen….

That trade is not going to happen. Cubs GM and Pres would be brain dead to do it. Harvey has minimal tradevalue at the moment. He has to do a whole lot more performing on the field before a club would consider giving a single low level minor league prospect for him.

I told yous guys before and no one wanted to listen but here is more proof. All these injuries and suspensions from the mets are a calculated way to save money. They could not afford the cespedes contract so they made an under handed agreement to have him miss time and have insurance pay it. Its like a vacation. Now they are doing it with harvey. There is no way all these guys could get hurt legitimately come on.

I have seen a lot of inane comments on here. That is right up there with the worst of them.
