Orioles Claim Luis Sardinas

By Jeff Todd | May 24, 2017 at 1:46pm CDT

The Orioles have claimed shortstop Luis Sardinas off waivers from the Padres, per a club announcement. He had been designated for assignment recently.

Sardinas, a switch-hitting 24-year-old, gives the Baltimore organization another piece of infield depth. The club had an open 40-man spot to work with, but will need to make an active roster move as Sardinas is out of options.

Things haven’t gone well thus far for Sardinas, who slashed only .163/.226/.163 in his 53 plate appearances with San Diego this year. He has seen action in each of the past four MLB campaigns, including this one, though he has compiled just 480 total plate appearances and owns a lifetime .570 OPS.

That said, Sardinas ranked among the game’s Top 100 prospects according to both MLB.com and Baseball Prospectus in 2013 and 2014. He was praised as an excellent defensive shortstop while ascending through the minors, though that hasn’t borne out in his brief MLB experience to date. With the Orioles, Sardinas figures to serve in a utility capacity — a role that veteran Paul Janish is currently filling with the big league club.

Maybe they will try to turn him into a pitcher.

Sardinas actually played pretty well for the Padres last year. The starting SS job was his to lose in Spring Training, but he somehow lost it to over-the-hill Erick Aybar.. The Padres liked his potential, but he was pretty terrible off the bench, so they eventually DFA’d him.

He’s still a pretty young guy — only 24 — and was a top 100 prospect for a while. I hope things work out for him in Baltimore.

Had reputation of being defensive wizard but seemed below average in his brief MLB action. Strikes out a lot, no power, doesn’t walk. I don’t think there is anything here.

I’m pretty convinced his performance at the end of last year was a fluke and he’s not going to turn it around, but you never know maybe he can surprise with a change of scenery. He’s looked abysmal at the plate so far this year and his defense has also been suspect, but that may be a function of him getting limited reps.

Its sort of unfortunate that he’s out of options at such a young age. I think he needs steady play time in AAA for a little to figure out whats going on.

Maybe he needs stability and not a change for scenery. He is pretty seasoned in that department already. TEX > MIL > SEA > SD > BAL…. who’s next?

Don’t quite get this. Who are the O’s going to DFA to make room for him on the 25 man roster? Janish after 2 AB? Is he really better than whoever is going away? He is not fast. He hasn’t hit well. Before anyone says anything, he had a BABIP 60 points over his career average with the Padres last season so he was lucky, not good. He doesn’t play good defense. Doesn’t have a cannon arm. Don’t see the what he offers other than youth.

Paul Janish is a mediocre journeyman. God forbid they DFA him.

Bourn has already been released. Plus, he wasn’t on the 40-man roster to begin with, as he was on a minor league contract.

For someone being as young (24) as he is, he sure has bounced around team to team the last 3 years. I believe this will be his 4th or 5th team

Sardinas is brutal. He has no internal clock on defense and gives little effort. The Padres and Andy Green wanted him to be the answer instead of the problem. As a lifelong fan, we know. Smh
