Steven Wright Considering Surgery That Could End His Season

By charliewilmoth | May 3, 2017 at 3:57pm CDT

Righty knuckleballer Steven Wright is meeting with the Red Sox today to consider potentially season-ending surgery on his injured left knee, Evan Drellich of CSNNE.com writes. Wright has visited a knee specialist, but has not yet reached a decision about his path forward.

The Red Sox placed Wright on the 10-day DL with a knee sprain earlier this week, and the team is set to purchase the contract of Kyle Kendrick tomorrow to fill out its rotation. Wright’s terrific 2016 season was cut short due to bursitis in his shoulder, and as he completed his recovery from that injury in Spring Training, it emerged that he had been wearing a knee brace to deal with soreness in that area.

Wright began the 2017 season in the Red Sox’ rotation, but struggled in five starts spanning 24 innings, posting an 8.25 ERA, 4.9 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9. If Wright were to return to health and effectiveness, it would be a boon to a Red Sox rotation that has already dealt with injuries to David Price and Drew Pomeranz in addition to Wright. Of course, today’s news would seem to indicate it’s unlikely Wright will be able to make a quick recovery.

Exactly, they can pitch forever. Only throw like 85 at the hardest. Whole reason why R.A. Has been pitching this long.

Why not trade Clay. You either pay him and have a bad pitcher on your team, or you just pay him.

John Farrell changed Wright’s luck from good to bad. Any takers on firing Farrell? I’ll use any excuse. Looking forward to the post Farrell era in Boston.

JDGoat understands, he had to watch Farrell attempt to manage in Toronto – frustrating. Farrell is seriously overrated. The same problems Farrell’s Jays teams demonstrated (inconsistent fundamentals and a general lack of leadership) are entirely visible in Boston. I genuinely don’t understand the appeal of John Farrell.

Well, since it’s a knee issue what does that have to do with the fact he’s a knuckler?

Try Wakefield’s bad back the last 10y of his career. Outside of that forcing him to miss various starts.. Go onto the DL now and then?

Farrell would never have the stones to make any headhunting demands. He’s too busy worrying about keeping everybody happy and being the squeaky clean leader that John Henry and the Sox corporation wants especially after leaving his wife for a local reporter.

This will clear a spot on the staff to find someone else to throw at people’s heads. A knuckleballer is no good for trying to injure players from other teams so this ought to make the Red Sox happy.

Only one guy threw anywhere near anyones head, and he was suspended for it.

The pitchers continuously going after Machado is pretty absurd imo, but theyre obviously sending a message about protecting their guys.

The Red Sox and especially Barnes and Sale are CRYBABIES. I hate both teams but Boston is acting ridiculous. There was no reason for sale to throw at machado which escalated the situation. If you think bundy threw at betts on purpose you don’t understand baseball. He doesn’t have good control and that was not a time that you hit a batter.

Buck and the Orioles are known as a win at all costs team, so just because Machado tried to hold up Pedroia after spiking doesn’t mean it was a complete accident. I’m just surprised Machado didn’t get fined for sliding so late with his spikes up and he should just pipe down.

… the rant following the game that was peppered with swear words needs to be addressed, too. We’re all big boys and girls, but for the actual boys and girls watching/listening that sets a terrible example. I understand Manny’s frustration and, lord knows, I’ve more than once popped-off on a similar rant, but these guys need to be more careful. Further, the Orioles-Sox feud is extremely childish and already more than played-out.

Not sure if you’ve actually watched the play. He slid on the ground and when he hit the bag it popped his feet up. What’s in it for him to try to hurt Pedroia who was at his wedding. These guys are friends away from the field so…….

I’ve seen the play and I don’t doubt that they are friends but it still looks like Machado slid hard and late like he was trying to slide through the bag and then he saw Pedroia standing on the bag and could slow down so he popped up and his momentum spiked him.
