The Yankees have announced that lefty CC Sabathia has been diagnosed with a grade 2 strain of his hamstring after undergoing an MRI, as WFAN’s Sweeny Murti tweets. While no official move has been made, it seems clear that Sabathia will require a DL stint.
An expected timetable isn’t yet known, but in all likelihood the Yankees will need to cover at least a handful of starts. As you might expect, a grade 2 strain falls in the middle of the severity chart, representing a partial tear of the muscle. Many other details of the injury, along with the individual’s actual progress, will obviously bear on the amount of rest that’s required.
It’s obviously unfortunate news for Sabathia, who was off to a rather impressive start to the year even as he closes in on his 37th birthday. Through 75 1/3 innings, he owns a 3.46 ERA with 7.4 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9, including a stellar 0.99 ERA over his past six trips to the hill. While he’s obviously not likely to return to his former dominance, the veteran has shown himself more than capable of being a productive rotation member while preparing to re-enter the open market at season’s end.
The injury comes at an interesting time for the Yankees, who currently pace the AL East by three games. While the organization has emphasized its desire to build for the long run, it’d be hard to pass up entirely on a chance to capitalize on that kind of position. Generally, then, the Yanks are lining up as deadline buyers, even if they shouldn’t be expected to push in significant chips for rental players.
Though the staff has been a rather pleasant surprise, the depth has always been somewhat in question. The club has used just five pitchers for all but one start thus far, but that’ll soon change. With questions also hanging over the struggling Masahiro Tanaka, and long-term rotation openings also factoring into the equation, it’ll be interesting to see whether New York ends up wading into the starting pitching market this summer.
It’s not yet clear who’ll take over for Sabathia in the meantime, though at least that’ll give the club a chance to take a closer look at another arm. Chad Green has already made one start this year and could move over from the bullpen. Luis Cessa and Domingo German are other 40-man members with MLB experience.

GIVE ADAMS A CHANCE!!! Okay…I like German too. What we don’t need is more mediocrity from Green and Cessa. Unfortunately, those 2 are exactly who will get the spot because we’re dumb.
joeyreo13
German Adams Or even Dietrich Enns!!!!!!!!
dwhitt3
Dietrich Enns is on the DL.
timm-2
YES YES please YES
I know he needs to be added on the 40 man but the guy has earned a shot.

It figured NY would have to make a move before the deadline with regards to the rotation anyway if they stayed competitive, this nails it. Now the choice is to move some of those kids (not top ones of course) to fix a rickety rotation, or move forwards knowing 2-3 of the members have iffy histories at best and the best member hasn’t done anything this season. not a knock, but think this team has managed to put several of it’s kids together and producing right away and the rotation isn’t going to hold up.
Dynasty
LOL. Mad.
davidcoonce74
I could actually see Jeff Samardzija as a decent piece. He probably would just cost the Yanks money and a minor-ish prospect. He’s been pitching lights-out lately and his peripherals are very good this year. Plus, he’s a durable starter which the Yanks could sorely use.
dwhitt3
No. Jeff Samardzija would not be a decent piece. I’d rather Chas Green and Bryan Mitchell.
davidcoonce74
Samardzija is a much better pitcher than those guys. Depends on if the Yanks are all in for this season.

Every contending or division leading team has exactly the same problem…..pitching.
The Yanks “rickey rotation” stacks up as just the same as Houston’s or other contenders at this time.
I would rather have the Yankees rotation than the Red Sox.. No hope based on a gutted farm system….and please don’t tell us about Devers…an overweight, can’t field, never will be.
The Yankees will side step the temptation to pick up a stop gap pitcher and not waste their farm system on Maybe’s, Should be’s and Never will be’s!
If the right trade comes along, which will continue to build for the future, I’m all for it but Cashman is not DD thank God.
And yeh, I do agree with billysbbalz about sticking to the Sox with the comments on the Yankees.
thegreatcerealfamine
So many plug their posts in here like they know the team. Stick to their own teams on suggested trades!
thegreatcerealfamine
rocky..I don’t mind the Sox fans posts so much, there usually pretty entertaining. It’s the others who play moral police, junior GM’s,and analytics professionals”you’ll see the usual suspects here” who are so tiring!
Bruin1012
Well let’s John Silver Devers is all of 20 one of the youngest guys in AA and he is absolutely mashing the ball. Devers is a a very good prospect and his bat should carry him anywhere. Have you watched him play he is better at third then most thought he would be. What are you basing your opinion on a fielding percentage? I’m sure you haven’t watched him play and making ifnorant comments comments about a Red Sox prospect is stupid. The Yankees are most likely going to have to make a move for some starting pitching if they want to win this year. They have been better quicker then most people thought now let’s see what they do at the trade deadline. Let’s see if they have the discipline to stay the course. The Yankees have had a great start to the season let’s see what happens when they start to falter a bit.
Bruin1012
I’m sorry meant to rocky 7 not John Silver
billysbballz
Hey John Silver, keep your red sawk troll train opinion away from Yankee threads. Your hoping we trade our young kids because DD gutted your farm.
User 4245925809
I can be reasonable and look at things from long term approach as to what a team may need to possibly fix an issue, whether or not it’s a team follow/like/dislike and some cannot. think have shown that over the years here.
NY is going to need do do something to that rotation.. you watch..
ehoop99
Jason Vargas straight up for judge! Done.
dodgerfan711
Not enough for the royals. Vargas would require all the yankees top 100 prospects
jd396
Don’t be ridiculous. The Yankees would only throw in their top 100 prospects if the Royals include Cheslor Cuthbert in the deal.
joeyreo13
Don’t leave out the baseballs we are running low from all the homerun from judge
cgallant
Phphphphhahhhahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahahahahhahh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nope would only trade Judge for Soler

8-12 weeks recovery time. Mid August to Mid September return date and then he will need a few rehab starts. Not good for the Yankees.
thegreatcerealfamine
How do you live with yourself?
Aaron Sapoznik
Another likely suitor for Jose Quintana and the Yankees certainly have the inventory of prospects to tantalize the White Sox. A quality controllable and durable southpaw is always a welcome commodity, particularly in Yankee Stadium.
I gotta believe the Yankees would welcome a reunion with a pitcher they regret losing once to Chicago. The White Sox might have another piece or two on their active roster to further entice New York into a blockbuster deal, some of whom may also be of interest the rival Red Sox.
a1544
Nah he sucks
seckert15
I dont want him. Young, controllable, whatever. Is he any better than anyone else we could run out there. He is 2-8 this year and a sub .500 pitcher for his career. Not the type of pitcher I would pay a kings ransom for. And it would take a kings ransom to het him.
seckert15
I see another Jeff Samardzija. a lot of hype and 20 games under .500.
davidcoonce74
Are we still even looking at win-loss records to prove pitcher value anymore? Because I can assure you teams aren’t looking at them.
rocky7
Ah, Mr. Metrics…..yes won loss records still help define whether he’s a winner or just another guy.
All these metrics sometimes just are used to mask deficiencies much like Quintana who is sub .500 for his career. And before you start about the lousy ChiSox defense,Chris Sales pitched for the same team and was a winner.
BooYah!
outinleftfield
Can you explain what wins have to do with a pitcher’s performance?
seckert15
You should look at won / loss. Analytics and sabermetrics are why teams give out horrible contracts like Jason Hayward and Jacoby Ellsbury. In the end, win/loss is what gets you in the playoffs
jdgoat
That’s a backwards logic. People know that win loss records are pretty meaningless for pitchers now. Especially for a guy like Quintana who has a track record of being good but only loses because he’s on awful teams
jdgoat
Like last night joe smith blew a three run lead in one inning and still got a win. Now he’s been good all year but you look at his actual stats, not his pitching record
davidcoonce74
Here’s two pitchers:
A: 175 IP. 186 Hits allowed. 46 BB. 90Ks. 4.17 ERA.
B: 250 IP. 194 hits allowed. 70 BB. 232 Ks. 2.27 ERA
Which pitcher “won” more games, and then which pitcher would you rather have on your team?
rocky7
Right on brother!
rocky7
Ah excuse me but Chris Sale pitched for that same awful team and had a winning record last time anybody checked.
dewssox79
because Wins mean something. lol. He has always been at the top for lowest run support. it bafflles my mind that people still look at wins and losses
rocky7
Have you checked his record to date buddy…nothing to write home about and the White Sox wanted the world for him before, why would you believe they would lower their demands now with the Yankees actually with a 2 game lead. Also, why would we want other castoffs from a losing team when we have the young horses to turn things around nicely in NY for years to come.
I’ve said it before, damn the metrics Quintana is overrated.
dwhitt3
We don’t need Quintana.
southi
I wonder if the Yankees would have any interest in Jamie Garcia (especially if he continues pitching well). Yes, Garcia has had injury issues at times but he’s also has had periods of good success too. Garcia also probably wouldn’t cost too much to acquire since he is on an expiring contract.
thegreatcerealfamine
Emphatic NO!!
halos101
bummer
GarryHarris
Jordan Zimmerman seems to have returned to form and has pitched like the Zimmerman of old the last 3 games. If he continues, even though he’s got a large contract, the Yankees could look at him. He’s only 31 and signed through his age 34 year, not through age 37 as C.C. Sabathia was. If Zimmerman continues to pitch well his next 6+ starts. The Tigers and Yankees are scheduled to play during the July 31 deadline and a trade could happen.
acarneglia
We started out strong. We knew something bad like this would be coming.
driftcat28 2
I’m hoping the Yanks promote Chance Adams now and give him a few starts now the the opportunity is there!
