July 19, 6:20pm: Maybin has gone on the DL, the team announced. The Halos selected the contract of Shane Robinson to take his place.
12:15am: The Angels announced that an MRI revealed a Grade 1 MCL sprain in Maybin’s right knee. The Angels added that the “generic timetable for this injury is two to four weeks.” Even if Maybin is able to make it back on the shorter end of that timetable, he appears likely to be sidelined beyond the July 31 non-waiver deadline, which is a rough blow for the Halos whether they aim to contend or sell off veteran pieces.
July 18, 10:04pm: Angels left fielder Cameron Maybin suffered a knee injury when trying to steal second base in tonight’s game and had to be helped off the field, as Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register tweets (video link via MLB.com). Maybin pulled up on an attempted steal of second base and slid awkwardly into the bag before immediately calling for the trainer to come out to second base.
[Related: Los Angeles Angels depth chart]
There’s no word on the extent of the injury just yet, though the move comes with plenty of implications for the Halos, who are reportedly deciding on how to proceed with the non-waiver trade deadline approaching. A hot streak out of the Angels could compel the team to attempt to add a few modest pieces, especially now that they have a healthy Mike Trout back in the lineup. Conversely, a week of struggles could lead to a sell-off of some shorter-term assets.
Even though he’s slumped recently, a healthy Maybin is an important piece of the Angels’ lineup. The 30-year-old is hitting a respectable .238/.342/.368 with six homers, 25 stolen bases and strong defense between left field and center field. His absence won’t do many favors for the Angels’ chances in a pivotal week for the franchise as it weighs deadline strategies.
Similarly, if the Halos ultimately sell off some short-term pieces, Maybin would’ve been a natural trade candidate, as he’s set to hit free agency at season’s end. The Angels have other rental options that they could market — Bud Norris, Yusmeiro Petit, David Hernandez, Yunel Escobar — though any notable injury to Maybin could cost them the opportunity to deal a player that could be viewed as a nice bench option, if not a bit more, by contending clubs.

Actually , this is the Best thing for the Angels it has gotten them out of that fantasy Land thinking of Playoffs , Sell or Give away the Junk !
HaloShane
Well put William! I concur 100%.
angelsinthetroutfield
I think the plan was to sell barring an extremely strong stretch in the weeks before the deadline. Like you said though this should put to bed any wondering. Hoping it’s something minor Maybin is a good dude and could net us something decent in a trade.
ryanw-2
And how many teams are in the same position in the Wild Card race in the AL? They’re 3 games back of a playoff spot. Sounds to me like fans like you are the ones stuck in a fantasy land where you’re still clinging to offseason predictions and can’t deal with the realities of baseball! How about that great Cubs team this year?
angelsinthetroutfield
Dude, we’re about to be 4 games under .500 with a rotation full of 5th starters. What makes you think the current club has a WS run in them? Anyone reasonable can see the logic in cashing in the chips while we still can and retooling next yr when we’ll have a healthy rotation. We are not built for a deep playoff run so why do you think it’s wise to spin our wheels and waste the opportunity to get something for our pending FAs? It’s fans like you who refuse to think about the future, who’d damn the team out of stubbornness.
ryanw-2
Fine, give up on your team. 12 of 15 AL teams are within 5 games of a playoff spot. You’re either not paying attention or just can’t deal with the grind. You know how many teams were around .500 in July and went on a run down the stretch? Numerous. Learn your history and how baseball works. Any one of these teams in WC race can go on a run at any time. The Rays should not be where they are. But they are. The Cubs and Cardinals should not be .500 teams. But they are. The problem here is armchair quarterbacks like you who think they know better than a major league franchise. There’s a reason you’re not on that field or in that front office. Learn the grind. Baseball is the most unpredictable sport in the world. And here you are talking like you know what’s going to happen. Or maybe you should stick to football or basketball. There’s no such thing as being built for a playoff run. There’s just getting hot at the right time. Welcome to baseball!
halos101
learn the grind? relax ryan and be honest with yourself. The angels probably aren’t making the playoffs this year, nobody’s guaranteeing anything. And saying that they prob won’t isn’t “giving up on your team” or “can’t deal with the grind” it’s called realistic… and i bet eppler knows this isn’t the year
Phattey
Lollololol this boy writing a bible over here

That moment when you realize the angles are still paying josh Hamilton hella money
HaloShane
Exactly AngelsintheTroutfield. Some get it others don’t….. This team is as good as burnt toast.
Really just that simple unfortunately.
Angelfanforlife19
Arm chair quarterback? And your questioning my baseball knowledge? LOL OMG Becky I mean Ryan………keep wishing. Miraleces
Angelfanforlife19
Armchair Quarterback? and your question my baseball knowledge OMG! Let’s hope for this and that and the other and maybe if the positioning of the moon is just right we’ll still fall short. Take stock of the currant state of affairs and have a clear direction starting with understanding our troubles.
vtadave
Ryan – Your team isn’t going anywhere. Either are the Tigers who are only 4.5 back in the WC and are wisely selling.
rez2405 2
Here’s the hole in the argument about having a rotation full of 5th starters: #5s dont have ERAs well into the 3s (Bridwell and meyer). Furthermore at the time of your post they gained a game in the wc race. Selling pieces of the team would be premature at any record because you got Heaney, Richards, tropeano, and skaggs all coming back with what you seen in Meyer and bridwell all next year. Plus you got more than capable backups with shoemaker and Romero. If thats not a pretty damn good rotation then I don’t know what is. Plus you got a damn good bullpen as well.
ryanw-2
Their rotation is 6th in the AL in ERA. Actually better than some of the teams ahead of them. Twins are 14th in ERA and only a game out. Think many of these people are still stuck on the offseason projections that were foolishly based on a fluky 88 loss season.
ReverieDays
The Cubs teams that’s only 2.5 games out of first and winners of 5 straight?
Phattey
I’m a Brewers fan and follow the division closely .. The Cubs are by far the best team in the NL along with the Dodgers .. Now that they just traded for Jose it’s not a stretch to imagine them going on a 30-5 run like the Dodgers just did
Phattey
Couldn’t agree more man .. They need to do a minor rebuild while trout is still young so by the time he gets to be around 27 -28 in his prime they’ll be World Series contenders year in and year out
bravesfan88
Unfortunately, it almost just seemed like a matter of time before Maybin went down. He’s always been a talented player, and he’s played through a myriad of injuries..One does have to wonder though, just how differently his career could have turned out, had he been able to stay healthy throughout the years…
My sympathy goes out to Maybin, and Angels’ fans…So typical, yet so frustrating. They finally get their main player back healthy, only to lose another player to injury…
It’s just unfortunate…By the looks of it, I’m guessing Maybin could be out anywhere from a month or two to the rest of the season…Hopefully though, he’ll come back healthy soon…
Angelfanforlife19
It’s a shame the position my beloved Angels are in….such turmoil and an owner who should move on from a lame duck manager and should sell!
bwick17
They need to bring up Cesar Puello and give him a chance. He’s hitting .401/.635/1.085 in 33 games with 6 HR’s and 5 SB’s at Triple-A since they signed him.

Sell the team to someone whom wants to win. The final mistake will be watching trout walk. Records, money are nice but championships round out a career please wake up Moreno. Our one and only franchise player and look where we are hoping and praying for miracles. Yes I Said it!!!
ryanw-2
I seem to remember Arte spending a lot of money to win. At least he tries and gives the Angels a hefty payroll. Perhaps you forget previous ownership that would spend and then just stop when their window was opening. Gene Autry squandered a lot of opportunities in the late 80’s/early 90’s. Angels fans seem to have become oblivious to how good they’ve had it under Artie’s ownership compared to 30 years ago!
Angelfanforlife19
I’d rather have Gene than Arte, I have never seen such a sad state of affairs. No new stadium, no farm system, falling short year after year even when he was spending money and now no money to spend the well has dried up maybe there are financial issues. Just to many egos and up and down to the minors with the players two blown arms to many issues.
ryanw-2
If Gene was still owner he would’ve halted the Angels payroll to the middle of MLB or lower as soon as their playoff run ended in 2010. And then they’d probably have a 90 loss team through o,f the stretch since then. You obviously don’t know your Angels history when it comes to ownership. Jerry Dipoto is the reason the Angels have a weak farm system, not Arte. But considering the crap prospects that were dealt for JD Martinez and Todd Frazier today, the state of the Angels farm system looks more and more like media hype. And you’re obviously forgetting all the good young starting rotation the club has lost to major arm injuries. If it weren’t for that, they could spend the money they’re paying Ricky Nolasco on a bat. But then again, the Cubs and Giants have a higher payroll and are both struggling. Welcome to the real world of baseball! If Autry was still owner there would’ve been no chance the last 7 years. Thank you for attending class!
Angelfanforlife19
Kindergarten isn’t real school son. The fact remains!!! Past seven and next seven and we will be having the same argument plus the loss of trout. Defend all you want you can have Arte as I suffer as Angel fan. And for your information letting Ryan walk was Gene biggest error and history repeats its self or better yet trout is a fool to stick around if Moreno doesn’t wake up from this band aid approach. We’ll see and time will tell. Lesson to the pupil.
ryanw-2
The only thing you’ve taught is your skills as an armchair quarterback. Arte has spend trying to win far more than Gene Autry ever did. But it doesn’t matter because there’s one thing that prevails over both. It’s called baseball. You want a controlled game? Stick to basketball.
Ayy-Aron
Best comment I’ve seen on this post… thank you Ryan.
JERRY DIPOTO is why we were in such a bad spot. Why the new gm hasn’t made a “flashy” move, other than acquiring Simba… he is doing his best and quite a damn good job of it.
DIPOTO is the one who trade the farm for Half a season of Grienke, and bloated the payroll, as well as signed over the hill Fly ball pitchers.
riffraff
So let me get this straight – baseball is the most unpredictable sport in the world ( your words) but you are able to predict what would have happened under different ownership? Is it predictable or not?
halos101
LOL riffraff
ryanw-2
Uhhh what I said about Autry was based on actual history. The Angels under Arte are a far more consistent team in the playoff race than any period under Gene Autry. The closest was the early to mid 80’s. Other than that, you rarely had consecutive seasons of contention. Because Autry would put the brakes on payroll and would strip things down without an actual rebuild from within. The reason the Angels developed the homegrown core that won them their only championship was because Jackie Autry finally convinced her husband to actually build through their farm system. He did and could’ve built a juggernaut if he had supplemented that young core with the money he spent in the 80’s. But he didn’t. So the pattern is there. He likely would’ve halted payroll considerably after the Angels playoff run ended. And we’d likely see the same limbo the Angels were in from about 1987 to 1994.
halos101
arte has spent, just not in the right ways. Cannot say he hasn’t tried
mb05
Cardinals can send Grichuk back out west…
ryanw-2
Be careful what you wish for. Angels fans are so uneducated about the game itself that they still think Grichuk was a horrible loss and would celebrate in the streets if they re-acquired him!
halos101
i’m sure every fan except you would parade the streets cause apparently your the only one educated about the sport of baseball
timyanks
a .238 ba has never been respectable
davidcoonce74
Why are we still talking about batting average? The most important skill in baseball – one of them – is getting on base. Maybin’s OBP is well above average. He provides a ton of value on the basepaths and defensively. He’s been worth almost 2 wins this year despite missing 15 games. We’re long past the dark ages when people thought batting average was important. Let’s get up to speed.
ryanw-2
Batting average is one of the worst evaluators of a player. He has a .340 OBP. If he were hitting .280 his OBP would be around .390. For a full healthy 162 Game season he would be worth about 3.9 WAR right now. That’s how you evaluate the value of players.
I Believe We Can Win
Your best ability is your availability.
timyanks
i only mentioned ba. i said nothing about the other stats. i repeat, .238 isn’t respectable, ever. besides, obp, slugging, ops, means nothing, without producing results, scoring runs and driving them in.
davidcoonce74
The sentence didn’t read that way. It was a triple slash line, which is perfectly fine for a player with Maybin’s other skills. I’ll take a two-win player over half a season than a few extra balls falling in for hits.
timyanks
those other two slashes prove nothing about production.
davidcoonce74
Getting on base and hitting the ball don’t prove anything about production? Last time I heard, runs win baseball games.
ryanw-2
Again… Maybin’s value this season is worth 3.9 WAR over a full healthy 162 game season. Winning involves a lot more than getting hits. There’s the value of hits, moving runners, taking extra base, forcing a bad throw. A lot of runs are scored because of these things and not just getting hits.
yoyo137
Smh they need to stop stealing bases or we’re going to have 0 outfielders
I Believe We Can Win
Only a matter of time.
ryanw-2
And like clockwork, Angels fans on here are jumping ship at the first sign of trouble when they’re just 4 GB of a playoff spot, in a real slump for the first time since April, and especially when none of the teams ahead of them have been able to put together a run any more than they have. Lots of baseball left, but some just can’t handle the grind. Love my Angels since 1989. But the fan base…
angelsfan4life
Ryan we both know that this is So Cal aka band wagon central USA. Most of these people thought Conger was going to be an All Star and blamed Scioscia saying he was the reason why Conger wasn’t better. Every bad move Jerry Dipsnot made was Scioscia’s fault. And every good move was Dipsnot all by himself. The Angels will not be trading players for guys who won’t be ready until 2020 or later. They will trade for guys who can help them win over the next few years.
Phattey
Hey my boy conger was an animal I dunno what you’re talking bout he got me up to at least 12 hits in a row on beat the streak .. Man is a hero he got me free dunkin doughnuts
ryanw-2
The sad part is they proved my point, especially going out of their way to make comments declaring the season is over. It’s like there’s this emotional barrier in some people where they feel like there’s some great consequence for getting behind your team. Like they’re afraid. Or it’s just the people who still don’t know the difference between what’s on paper and what happens on the field. Numerous teams have defied what’s on paper and what the projections are every season. Some here have obviously not learned that. Angels threads are where you’ll find the most fans being negative and giving up on their team even when they’re within reach of a playoff spot. Just sad.
halos101
The only thing that’s sad here is how you think you are far more advanced in knowledge than anyone on this site. Your opinion that teams should stand pat hoping to defy odds is not what everyone holds, and your not some genious everyone is kneeling down too. Bottom line is this site is literally for people that like to talk about potential moves that could better their teams so if you never want to make any moves because “numerous teams have defied what’s on paper” then your on the wrong site.
halos101
Your acting like the grind of watching a sport on tv every night is just too much too handle. I get there’s ups and downs in a season, but that’s part of being a sports fan. But unless your physically playing or working on that team your not enduring some exhausting grind that can barely be handled
Phattey
Hey man he could be the ball boy it’s exhausting having to field them foul balls and toss them to the fans talk about a grind just imagine the stress that puts on your arm that kind of stress could easily lead to tommy john if you’re not careful when aiming for the second row
halos101
no, he’s “too educated” about the game of baseball to settle for being a ball boy…
yoyo137
Good for you man you should get an award for being a fan since 1989 and being better than every other fan!

Angels are 4 GB on the wild card with a team that has seemingly overachieved despite dealing with a brutal amount of injuries. Anybody who thinks this team is a playoff team just isn’t real. I love the angels and watch every game, and i hope they sell whatever value they have in expiring contracts. does this make me “uneducated about baseball”? No.does it make me a quitter and a bad fan? No… wanting to prepare for a potential healthy future is what i prefer the angels too do
TylerThe bravos fanatic
Oh man not my favorite player on the angels
TylerThe bravos fanatic
MLB needs to do away with DH for real
Angelfanforlife19
Fantasy land is located in Disneyland we don’t have enough to push through the layers of playoffs we have to depend to much on hoping for this or that to happen and miracles. I am very much a fan but reality stops me pretending the playoffs are a possibility. We may a lot of good people/souls but we don’t have enough to take it all the way. We are not one or two players aways from the post season. If that were only the case we would have this conversation.
Angelfanforlife19
And this is for all of you. We are all Angel fans and want nothing short of the best for OUR team but we don’t know what goes on behind the scenes after 15 or 18 years a certain someone must think he is king fish but all that has a beginning has an end. We don’t just don’t know the drama behind closed doors. The is only only one king fish and he is not driving the bus down the embankment with no breaks hoping for devise intervention.
Angelfanforlife19
Devine intervention……phone needs a exoticism.
Angelfanforlife19
Try this mike 1. Simmons 2. Calhoun 3. Trout 4. Cron 5. Puljols 6. Escobar 7. Cowart . 8. Maldonado 9. DH trade/minors call up and leave them alone for 25 games.
