Red Sox Release Jhonny Peralta

By Jeff Todd | July 13, 2017 at 2:32pm CDT

The Red Sox have released veteran third baseman Jhonny Peralta, per a club announcement. He had been playing with the team’s Triple-A affiliate after signing a minors deal.

Peralta, 35, was released by the Cardinals earlier this season partway through the fourth and final season of the $53MM pact he inked with the team in the 2013-14 offseason. While Peralta was excellent in St. Louis for the first two seasons of the deal, he missed significant time with a thumb injury in 2016 and hasn’t been productive when healthy enough to take the field in 2017. Through 58 PAs with the Cards, he hit just .204/.259/.204.

His work in the minors this season hasn’t been much better, as he’s batter .237/.246/.373 in 61 PAs between Class-A Advanced and Triple-A. Tim Britton of the Providence Journal tweets that the Sox and Peralta’s camp had an understanding at the time of his signing that the team would make a decision on whether or not to promote him during the All-Star break. Peralta’s play didn’t impress the team enough to dislodge Deven Marrero and Tzu-Wei Lin for the time being, so Peralta will head back to the open market. It’s been rumored that Rafael Devers is on the verge of moving up to Triple-A, as well, and this will clear more playing time for him at that level once that move takes place.

Needed a spot for Devers to be promoted to AAA. We’ll see him in Boston before the end of the month!

Wasn’t he hitting well? He probably asked for his release since he didn’t see a promotion with the Sox in the near future which he thought he probably deserved

He was hitting .200/.195/.375/.570 (41PA) for Pawtucket

And yeah, I didn’t type that wrong – he seriously had a lower OBP than BA

…on the plus side though, he was able to at least have a handful of XBH (3, to be specific). That is a dramatic improvement over his StL showing this season…

I mean, I don’t want to make it sound better than it was, but 10 games is such a small sample size for anything. I wasn’t expecting him to do much, but you think they would’ve given him more than a week and a half to get straightened out.

I mean, I can understand that in most situations, but…

Well clearly the Pawtucket play was seen as a continuation of the .204/.259/.204/.462 (58PA) ML showing this season

Obviously Boston watched and evaluated his current skills and abilities and came to the exact same conclusion the Cardinals did – that they no longer exist enough to warrant playing him anywhere (even in the minors)

He’s now 35 – completely falling off that cliff to become worthless overnight at the age happens all the time, and has been happening for more than a century

I didn’t think it was possible to have a lower OBP than a BA, but it is. In this case it means he did something good. He had a sacrifice fly for the PawSox.

Yeah, the quirk of a sacrifice fly counting against your OBP (which is based off of plate appearances) but not your AVG (due to a sacrifice fly not counting as an at bat) is the only way that fluke is possible.

Wrong. Clearing out the discards at Pawtucket so Devers has a spot. lots of chatter on Red Sox message boards this was going to happen. Also? Slob Sandoval has until Monday to be either reinstated on active roster, or DFA’d.. My money is on sent packing and Sox ride it out with Lin/Marrrero for a month or so, then go with Devers..

They have no need for Frazier

Agree. Trader DD would have already made a deal. Money this year is an issue as resetting the tax threshold is a priority. Is there a stupid GM that will take on Sandoval’s contract? Obviously not. Too bad Phil Jackson didn’t take over an MLB franchise upon leaving the Knicks…

Well, Dave Stewart got fired… so, there is that. I’m sure their is a gm that would take on his contract, but it would cost the Red Sox (in terms of good prospects) They wouldn’t get much back

Dealing for Frazier or Prado is throwing good money after bad. Either one would be a marginal improvement with a big price tag. Brock Holt should be back next week, and he and Panda can handle third. Not perfect, but sensible.

Don’t bank on Brock handling anything. He shines in the super utility role, not as the Sox regular 3B IMO. He will help but he isn’t the answer. I see Lin being sent back to Pawtucket and Merrero and Holt will share time with Devers coming up like Benny with the Sweet Hair, Xander and Ellsbury did August/September….

I remember when he signed with them and everyone freaked out. I guess some people can’t read or just plain stupid because it was a minor league deal

Or they could just call up Kaleb for more than one game…

(a game in which he went 2 for 3 with a BB and 2 RBI, I might add – seriously, wth is up with their insistence on keeping him stashed in SLC?)

Lot of pressure to put on Devers. They’re not all Mookie and Benny. Does anyone remember Moncada’s 11 ko’s, or whatever it was? That said, not a lot of options out there.

there are actually a few options. Frazier, Nunez, Freese, Escobar?, Lowrie

If they wanted to get serious they could try to pry away someone like Moustakas, Harrison, Donaldson, or maybe even Machado

maybe Devers is the answer, but he is far from a sure thing considering he is just now getting to AAA..

Boston doesn’t have the assets to “pry” Mous, Harrison, Donaldson, or you must be joking Machado away from anybody unless they would throw in one of your outfielders not named Bradley, into the mix.
You’re farm is bare….nothing to trade with the exception of Devers (jury out) …when are you Sox guys going to stop dreaming….DD drained the swamp!
