Reds Place Zack Cozart On 10-Day DL

By charliewilmoth | July 29, 2017 at 12:17pm CDT

The Reds have announced that they’ve placed shortstop Zack Cozart on the 10-day DL, recalling righty Kevin Shackleford from Triple-A Louisville to take his place. Cozart has been out since Tuesday after aggravating a quad injury, as Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reported yesterday.

“I’m just going to obviously have to deal with the rest of the year,” Cozart said. “I’d like to get whatever happened on Tuesday to calm down a little more so I can just go back to the way I was before Tuesday.”

[Related: Updated Cincinnati Reds Depth Chart]

The move suggests the Reds won’t be trading Cozart before Monday’s deadline. Cozart has hit brilliantly (.317/.402/.568) over 322 plate appearances this season and is eligible for free agency next winter, but rumors about him were somewhat scarce in a market in which there was limited need for shortstops. He was briefly connected to the Red Sox before their acquisition of Eduardo Nunez to help at third base.

Cincinnati Reds Transactions Zack Cozart

I was thinking Jays with Tulo out. IF they weren’t selling.

That sucks. Seeing what the other rentals fetched and considering outside of this year Cozart wasn’t always productive at the plate, I’d rather the reds get the comp pick. Hopefully when Cozart comes back healthy they mix in Peraza but better not bench Scooter at 2b. Reds fans, do you think we trade Suarez this off-season? I have been curious about him considering Senzel looks like he will be ready next year at some point. I remember them trading Frazier in 2015 with team control remaining.

The Reds won’t be getting a comp pick, no way that he turns down a 1 year 18 M$ deal this winter.

Why wouldn’t he turn down 1 year 18m? He’s having a career year minus injuries so if he’s to get a multi year deal it’d be now.

No team is going to come even close to that, not with his age/injury history. He’d be a lock to accept – and the last thing the Reds need to do is spend 18M$ on another player next year when they won’t be competing.

They should have traded him last year.

He’s not going to be traded in August, if he’s healthy he doesn’t clear waivers.

You could always trade him to the claiming team.

Only if the Reds want to shed 1 M$ for some peanuts, multiple teams will claim him (if he’s healthy).

It does not matter if multiple teams claim him. That would be no different the one team claiming him

Trade him in the off-season while his value is high. Senzel is tearing it up and almost ready.

The Reds would be dumb to call up Senzel any earlier than necessary. If they aren’t going to compete next year, then there is no reason for them to start his service clock.

Well it will be hard to trade him and his high value in the offseason since his contract expires in October

Senzel is hitting .339 at AA right now. He will be 23 years old next summer. At some point you have to start bringing players up to make a change and to see what they’ve got. Bet you anything he gets brought up next year.

I still see him as a good fit for the D-backs. They can roll with they guys they have while he heals and then move Owings over to 2B (send Drury or Marte down). The CO/Drury MI combo is an inning killer.

He’s been dealing with this injury since May, he probably won’t be “healthy enough” for any contender to want him at this point. Tough break for him, fingers crossed he comes back quickly.

Yet another player the Reds completely botched the trade (or in this case non-trade) of. Cueto, Leake, Chapman and now Cozart. Refused to trade him last year because “the offers weren’t good enough.” Hope they like getting jack squat for him!

They did not botch the Leake trade. They got an all-star in Adam Duvall. The other ones, that’s a different story lol.

They could have gotten more if they traded him in the offseason than they did by waiting until the deadline. A full season of Leake plus the right to extend him a QO is worth more than 2 months of Leake and no QO. Same situation with Cueto.

Yes, but at that time they were in a stage where they thought they could still contend.

          1. So you admit that they botched the trade?
          2. Wait. Who exactly thought the Reds could contend in 2015?

No, they did noy botch the leake trade. They thought they could contend. Go back and look at the off-season moves they made and it will reflect that. In 2013 they made the wild card. 2014 they went into the All-star break right near the top of the division before slumping in the second half. They thought they could bounce back. They did not get scrubs back for Leake.

If they thought they could contend they would have kept Latos and Simon (those were good trades for the Reds by the way). They were never going to contend. They wanted to try and look good for the All Star game that year and didn’t want to give up on extending Cueto even tho he was never going to extend in the first place. Duvall may be playing alright for the Reds now but I still can’t give them much credit for that trade cuz they could have gotten more for Leake (and Cueto) had they traded them the prior offseason.

I understand some of what you are trying to say but I respectfully disagree that they botched the Leake trade. Sure, if they traded him sooner they could have gotten more in terms,of a prospect haul but who knows how that would have turned out. What I am saying is that the haul they got out of the deal they did make for Leake was a good one, therefore I don’t consider it botched. I do agree, as most reds fans will, they really screwed up a lot of trades. I remember when they turned down the Diamondbacks offer for Chapman at the 2015 deadline. Horrible but they are moving in the right direction now with their drafting I feel.

Cozart is the exact same situation. They refused to trade him for a good return when it was offered because it wasn’t a colossal overpay and now there is no market for him and he’s about to simply leave.
Had they shopped Leake after the 2014 season the acquiring team would have gotten a full year of him and the right to QO him. His value went down between the offseason and the deadline when he was traded because those perks we’re lost. Same with Cueto, who was coming off a season where he would have won the Cy Young if Kershaw wasn’t even better.

I think it is hard to say the same situation. When was there an offer made? There hasn’t really been much interest. Also, hos track record is not even close to what Chapman, Cueto, Leake, etc

Pretty sure I saw articles saying “X, y and z teams trying to trade for Zack Cozart” last offseason. Even my Padres were linked to him, but it made little sense for them to trade legitimate prospects for a rental.
It’s the same situation in that they waited too long to trade him and it backfired.

The Mariners reportedly had an offer on the table for Cozart 12 months ago. The Reds failed to make the trade because they were too busy looking over medical reports on Mets farmhands.

The only known “offer” out on Cozart was last year at the deadline. We still don’t even know what the offer was so how can we judge? Also, other than that there have never been any teams seriously linked to him.

And they should have taken that offer when they had the chance. It couldn’t have been worse than just letting him walk (now the likely scenario)

Okay but once again, we have no idea what the offer was. And I don’t think the reds thought that there would be this little interest in Cozart. Truth is we don’t know what is going to happen with Cozart. He likes Cincinnati and if there really are no teams interested in trading for him, what makes you think there are going to be teams willing to pay him a big deal? Truthfully, I think the reds want to keep him, as they have stated. If there isn’t a big market for him, I could see them coming to agreement on a 3 year deal or something like that. Just watch.
